I just got caught up on one jets drive and I love this kids energy. he seems like a such a great teammate
It is amazing how the sport has progressed. I remember watching McNeil and thinking he had good speed, but I saw an old newspaper article from back when he was about to be drafted and it said he had been timed at 4.65 in the 40, which would be slow as an iceberg these days.
McNeil did not have great speed, but he had great vision and moves. He could make about anyone miss in the open field. Largely because of McNeil and Wesley Walker, Don Shula ordered that the tarp NOT be put on Miami's field when it rained the night before the AFC Champ game in early 1983. He wanted a really muddy track to mitigate McNeil's moves and Walker's speed. Rather poor sportsmanship by Shula to give his team a better chance, since he never did that before or after, as I recall.
We have this combo of Breece and MC for another two years after this season. Ready hope it flourishes Sent from my M2007J20CG using Tapatalk
Sometimes stories just take on a life of their own, even if they bear no relation to what actually occurred. Pools of water at midfield greeted both teams as they came out for their warmups. No tarp had covered the field during the 24 hours of rain before the game. Jet President Jim Kensil was furious. "The Orange Bowl doesn't even own a tarp," he said, "and the league bylaws say that every facility has to have one. A tarp costs about $4,000. The Orange Bowl people said that their Prescription Athletic Turf has pumps that suck out the water, but they didn't get the job done today. We could have brought our own tarps down from New York if we'd known. They said that a tarp would kill the grass underneath, but I'd rather play on dirt than this stuff." Walt Golby, the stadium manager, confirmed that the Orange Bowl doesn't own a tarp. "It's not necessary on this type of field," he said. "Look, I just inherited this job." I read another version where Shula ordered the stadium workers not to turn the pumps on knowing it would turn the field into a quagmire. Kind of suspicious they stopped working for that game no? No matter after winning those SBs in the early 70s the genius didn’t win another SB in his final 22 years coaching despite having one of the leagues top QBs if not the best. Karma? LOL
One of the stories I linked talked about the amount of rain and that it both overwhelmed the pumps and lasted too long to give them the two hours it would have taken to empty the system. I'd be curious to see what was written about the pumps, and when.
This would be a good time to post about the 4-2 Jets who just won at GB. PM me for the talking points. Or you can wait for the highlights
Let me know. Or I can help you find a link for the highlights. Best part about this win is guys like you will post less and less.....about the Jets.
