Yes but their success in the draft vs success in free agency is not so lopsided. JD gets a ton of credit for the last two drafts. I am not so sure he is the primary reason we have done so well. If the other teams' scouts were all that great our drafts would not have gone so well.
This is spot on. If JD used almost every draft pick on O-line and linebackers, and signed a free agent or two at each position next offeseason, if would almost not be excessive, that's how glaring a problem these two positions have become.
Pretty much all the scouts knew that Sauce was a top-tier pick. And G. Wilson. And that Breece Hall was the top RB in this past draft. And that JJ was one of the top three or four Edges. And that M. Carter was one of the top running backs last year. And that Z. Wilson was a top-ranked QB last year. And that AVT was one of the best guards to come out in some time. JD doesn't have some kind of magic college scouts telling him things that no other scouts are telling their teams about these players. What JD does have is an amazing ability to collect huge numbers of high draft picks by negotiating trades that aren't popular at the time but that everyone looks back at and thinks, "Wow, JD stole their shorts on that one." None of our college scouts were responsible for the fact that we had 4 top 35 picks this past year. As for FAs, they are always a crap shoot. But we've had some very good FA acquisitions. Reed looks great. Whitehead has had ups and downs, but overall is a huge improvement over what we have had before now. Morgan Moses was a great acquisition last year. Conklin is off to a pretty strong start. Sure, some get injured or aren't great, but this is a numbers game. And the numbers are doing just fine. Overall, we're a better team than we were two years ago. JD oversaw that. JD gets some credit. Will we become good enough to get him even more credit? We'll see.
This 8 yards thing is interesting to me, did not know this in regards to Hall. So does a team like the Niners do this so Wilson can get wide and use his speed (not even sure the Niners do this, I just took a variation of where MLF got his offense from). Also, would this make someone like MC not as effective since he doesn’t have that burst or speed?
https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-rookie...eason-multiple-reps-for-jets-packers-seahawks Wow................ just wow...........Daniel Jeremiah top 25 rookies as of today. Sauce Gardner ------ #1 Garrett Wilson ------- #5 Breece Hall ----------- #8 Jermaine Johnson -- #18
Sauce Gardner Gardner is already establishing himself as one of the premier players at his position. He has an uncanny knack for locating and playing the ball down the field. Garrett Wilson Wilson is ultra-twitched up and he’s already provided a pivotal touchdown catch in a comeback victory for the Jets. He has the look of a true No. 1 wideout. Breece Hall Hall is quickly emerging as the Jets’ main runner (team-high 38 carries for 178 yards) and he’s provided plenty of value in the passing game, as well (15 catches for 113 yards). He’s getting better every week, and I get the sense he’s on the verge of a monster game in the near future. Jermaine Johnson II Johnson has been very disruptive against both the run and pass. He has earned an increased role in the Jets’ defense.
And this isn't even mentioning Max Mitchell and Michael Clemons, ----- who alone would have constituted a great Mike Maccagnan draft.......... And I am hopeful about Jeremy Ruckert next year.
I really hope the trend continues upwards for this year's and last year's young players. It seems like we've really started to provide the coaching staff a good pool of talent to work with in important positions. The way these 1st and second years are playing, it makes next year's draft a really good chance to really take the roster to a contender level. (If the improvement keeps on coming across these players) Sauce is unreal Hall and carter should be a great 1-2 JJ proving to already be a good run defender MC2 a good slot corner Wilson and moore could become cornerstone WRs AVT is a foundation o line player Zach (I'll leave this one for other threads) If we can get ruckert, Clemons and Mitchell to be B level players in this league, we're looking strong.
