I've seen a lot of people demanding that the Jets hire an "experienced" head coach instead of going with a rookie. It got me thinking of who in the last 25 years was a successful hire after they were already a head coach. I did minimal research so please let me know who they are. Bill Belichick was 36-44 with the Browns when he got fired. Putting aside what we know now, is this the type of record of a coach that you would want to hire? How much of his success afterwards was due to Tom Brady? Andy Reid was 140-102-1 with the Eagles. Never got them a championship but he's a guy I would have hired I'd given the chance. Pete Carroll was 6-10 with the Jets and the the team basically quit in him. In this scenario I don't see anyone wanting him based on experience. Bruce Arians had a winning records prior to Tampa Bay with one playoff win. Is this the type of guy you would go after? A "culture changer?" The list goes on.... McCarthy, Rivera, Doug Peterson, Lovie Smith, Todd Bowles. I think it all sounds good in theory but it's not often that a proven winner shakes free like Parcells did for us all this years ago.
What are the odds of a Super Bowl winning coach quitting a team he just took to the super bowl and then actually wants to come to the New York Jets. That was the fucking lottery but some think it happens every day
Add Tom Coughlin to the list. Jaguars then Giants. bickety, Our problem is the ownership. No issue trying new coordinators. But as soon as you have the first sign that they are not competent, pull the plug.
What's the first sign? One losing season? How many candidates are lining up for this job when every coach get one season? Seriously. What was Jimmy Johnson's record his first season?
Why are you asking me? Am I the owner? Geez.... Do I have to pick their head coaches for them? How do you explain them investing in wrong coaches each and every time except Rex. I loved Rex. I soured on Bowles his second season. After his second season Andy Reid became available. Nope, we had to give Bowles 2 more sucky years. Adam Gase. Why not can him after 1 year? What else did you have to see? Saleh. Honestly bickety that guy is all hot air zero coaching smarts. But we will employ him next year as well. If not ownership, than whose to blame here? 12 years of no Playoffs. Who is accountable? To me, names of the coaches is not important. I blame the guys who pick them.
Gase was 7-9 after one year. As much as I hated him, how the fuck do you can him and not look like clown shoes? Come on!
Oh, so we don't look clown shoes now? When Gase was the coach we lost to an 0-10 team or something. That was enough to see. Okay I am out.
I'm with you here - I think the established coach vs. new coach thing is overblown. Tons of first-time coaches have turned out great lately, we just always seem to hire the wrong ones. McVay, Shanahan, LaFleur, McDermott, Daboll just off the top of my head.
You are correct …. I am of the opinion that Johnson does not even belong in the Hall of Fame. Yes he was a good coach and I know he won two SBs with Dallas but he also got extremely lucky with that Hershall Walker trade. He went to Miami and pretty much fell on his face. He couldn’t duplicate his success there without another batch of multiple high draft picks…. I think his total career win total was about 80? Is that really in line with a HOF nomination? As far as Saleh goes let’s see where the Jets are at the end of the year and more importantly Zach’s development …
The way the NFL works and the way contracts are structured now you are committing to a coach for at least 3 years when you hire him unless there are some character issues like Gase, Mangini, Groh or Meyer. If you want to attract future candidates ownership needs to give coaches at least 3 years. We might even be looking at 4 year minimums now as many head coaches are getting 5 year contracts like Saleh.
Tell that to the 49ers. They fired a winning coach in Harbaugh, fired Tomsula after one year, and still got Shanahan.
