In years past there was,as there is for every team, some interesting decisions when creating the final roster. But for the jets, these kind of decisions really didn't matter. Keeping player A over B or vice-versa was relatively unimportant. Neither A or B was any good and they didnt have a positive impact on the game I think it's different this year. We have what seems to be excess talent at a number of positions. Some of our cuts will be valuable players for others. Some of our keeps may prove to be wrong though i hope not. The staff has their work cut out for them
WR, RB abd D-line decisions will be interesting. It's nice to see some talent and depth at enough positions that the decisions for the coaching staff won't be easy for a change.
Our biggest problem, and it is somewhat of an indictment of JD, is that our roster is too deep at certain positions, and painfully thin at others.
We always go into the season thinking we have depth at "x position", then the season starts, and reality (and injury) hit.
Agree! Not super worried about WR as the 4 main ones are much better vs the next tier… Trade Mims while he has value as he has not out played Tarik Black, Calvin Jackson or Irvin Charles in camp. RB however is where I do worry. It’s going to be Hall, Carter, Coleman (Jets will feel they need a vet)… it’s said the Jets will keep 3, not 4… but Zonovan Knight needs to be on the roster. He’s looked explosive and you won’t be able to hide him on the PS…. Hopefully, the Jets don’t f things up like they usually do.
I agree about Knight. In reality you can’t really “hide” somebody on the practice squad. Every team has personnel specifically scouring other teams cuts and practice squads. If another team likes Knight enough to promote him to the roster he’s gone…. I like him too. Better than Perine. I’d rather see the Jets cut ties with him.
Oddly our TE room has become top filled with potential talent, it is a novel thing after so long with out a decent TE.
Definitely an indictment of him considering one of the thin groups is OL, which he's sunk a ton of resources into. The only other one is probably LB though. We're deep or adequately deep at WR, RB, TE, S, CB, DL. I think the larger problem is that we have basically 0 elite, proven players at any position group. We don't have a single player anywhere that would be considered top 5-10 at his position. Our best hopes of changing that in the near future are probably Sauce, GW, and Moore.
That’s pretty much how I feel as well…I was saying in another thread I think how our backups are getting better…it feels like we have fewer scrubs and more players that we’d like to keep than we have roster spots for, and that’s a huge step compared to where we’ve been for so long however, until we get better starters and some real stars, it won’t make enough difference in the W-L columns. Doesn’t matter if we have better 2’s and 3’s if our starters can’t win at their level. I do feel like we are getting better….I think Conklin is going to be pretty good at TE, I like our top 4 receivers as a group we have size, speed, shiftiness…I like our RB combo of Hall and Carter…the OL should be better but they will need a couple weeks to get there because they looked pretty poor against the Giants backups especially in the running game…we have a bunch of good pass rushers but can they get the sacks and close the deal or will we continue to see them get *almost* there and have to hear all the excuses like hurries and pressures are just as good as sacks…our secondary should be better, and hopefully we’ll magically learn how to cover a screen pass or a toss to the flat…
Was thinking the same thing. I'm incredibly excited about this group. Especially for a young QB who is developing.
Ashtyn Davis should be cut. If he's not then I'm really concerned we are fielding the best team without egos
Here's the thing. Making stock market bets based on the past is a road to failure. The truly successful are quite contrarian and ask themselves what is going on in the present that allows to me to see into the future. Th same applies on the football field. Its often a failure to make player, scheme, whatever decisions on what happened in the past. Its essential to examine the here and now. But this is hard. All kinds of biases color our decisions. Its extremely important for the staff to examine how their decision making led to whatever "mistakes' they made, and to learn from that. This is hard to do. People are unwilling to admit mistakes. People are more adverse to risk than they are drawn to reward. Its quite interesting to me watching the team forming its roster and creating playing schemes. As I'm old, i go way back. The sign of Belichick's greatness was cutting Bledsoe in favor of Brady. A gutsy move that cemented his ability to examine the present without past biases.
He traded Bledsoe for a 1st round draft pick, he didn't release him. Its less gutsy when you get that high of a return, especially when you've already won a SB with the back up Lastly, while I agree with your nice paragraph about being willing to make mistakes, Belichick inherited Bledsoe so even if he did cut him, it was not really admitting his mistake
I guess your memory is better than mine. And my point about Bledsoe was not about admitting a mistake, it was about not being bound to the past when making decisions.
To his defense, I feel like JD tried to do that this offseason. We were at least involved in basically every major WR trade discussion that happened (except maybe AJ Brown?) but when all of those fell through he did what most good teams do to get their Plus starters/Stars, he selected them early in the draft. I think Zach, Sauce, GW, Elijah, Breece, JJ, & AVT all have Pro-Bowl+ potential. Will they all hit that ceiling? Maybe, maybe not, but even if half of them do, we'll be in a good spot going forward. I hope those results come this year because I think JD and Saleh have the right philosophy on team-building/roster construction but if we have another 4-13 year both of their seats will get pretty hot.
I don't want the jets to move Mims. He and Davis are our only big receivers. If they move Mims, and Davis goes down, we will regret it. Moore, Berrios, and Wilson are fine talent but small. Brandon Marshall showed us what a tall receiver can do on jump balls in the red zone.
The jets aren't going to make the playoffs by traditionally matching up skill-to-skill against teams. Rather they need the intangibles to make the playoffs this year. That means smart players with heart, team mentality, and over-average plays when it counts most. What they really don't need is guys who flash here and there but in big moments fold by jumping off side on a 4th and 1 or butter fingering picking up a fumble or screwing up an assignment so bad the other team scores an easy TD. Guys who I'd like to see go according to my criteria: Tanzel Smart Zuniga Joyner Edoga Wesco Feeney Braden Mann (obviously he's staying to our detriment). Shepherd Guys I want to see stick: Bradley Anae Jonathan Marshall Will Parks Cager Streveler
