(18) Adam Schefter on Twitter: "Cardinals are giving Kyler Murray a five-year, $230.5 million deal that includes $160 million guaranteed, per source. It gives Murray the second highest paid QB average at $46.1 million per year." / Twitter
He's a good player but the Cards overpaid here. Just off the top of my head Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, Herbert, Jackson are better as far as the young QB's go. As for the vets you can add Brady, Rodgers, Prescott who are better than him IMHO.
We just stepped into the era where good young QB's are an impediment to winning a Super Bowl. I guess it was kind of inevitable however it is really strange watching a team lock themselves out of Super Bowl competition for the career of their QB. Not saying the Cards won't make the playoffs a few times but they are Russell Wilsoned out of winning the whole thing. Usually you had to win one before that happened.
In all actuality whether you believe he is worth it or not, the Cardinals had no choice. They extended Kingsbury and Kiem so this was the only out come. I think he's to tiny to ever be effective for a full season, but no one can say that the Cards aren't better with him. Not a bad deal considering they are getting him for the next 6 years at a rate that will only skyrocket next season. Looks like the Watson contract is an outlier and not the norm.
I don't think it is inevitable that contracts will continue to skyrocket. Baseball and Hockey and to a lesser extent Basketball have all gone to an analytics based approach to winning at the professional level. Once you really start crunching numbers like that you can put things like win-shares on record and the rationale for extreme salaries for individuals begins to evaporate in that type of environment. Eventually we'll get a Bill James moment for the NFL and it will become clear that QB's are just part of the package and not as large a part as is widely assumed at this point.
Agree. He took over a bad team and has improved the record every year he has been there, so that's a big plus. Don't agree about the Watson contract, it has now become the standard. All QB's who have had some modicum of success will point to that contract, even though they may not get that number. I doubt Murray would have gotten the number he did if it wasn't for Watson's contract. That means if Zach Wilson achieves the kind of success we all hope he does, that's what we can expect the Jets will have to pay him.
Just reported that Murray's contract requires him to put in at least 4 hours a day of study. Whaaa? Did his mother have a say in writing the contract? Very strange.
He’ll bring in a note from his mother Please excuse Kyller from doing any homework last nite, there was a family emergency Sincerely Kyler’s mother
It's 4 hours a week on game weeks, so 68 hours spread out over the entire season. The problem I have with that is, why would you want to give $230m to a guy you need to force to study film
