There were many highs and many lows. As a Jets fan, do you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of Herman Edwards
3 playoff trips in 5 years, mostly with Parcells leavings and with a QB repeatedly injured. I'm not sure there has been a better stretch in Jets history after the merger. Pros: good motivator, delegated well without interfering, knew what the Jets had at any given moment. Cons: poor clock management, allowed poor depth to cripple the Jets at times, more of a cheerleader than a captain. Herm skipped a step in the promotion chain never serving as a coordinator. That experience would have served him well. He still did about as much as he could with what he was given.
Really I feel neutral about him. He had good parts and bad parts. Forced to choose, it would be unfavorable because of the way he forced his way out to KC.
This was a tough one for me personally, but in the end, I went with favorable as there were many memorable moments as a fan at this time. My biggest issue with Herman Edwards is that he let Paul Hackett get away with calling the most conservative offense I have ever seen in my life for FAR TOO LONG. That offense had some real talent, and much of it was wasted under Hackett.
Herm did a good job of cutting down the penalties. His switch to the cover two defense fed the Patriots the players they needed to win their first championship when he cut the 3-4 guys loose.
"HELLO!" We did win a division with the guy.......somehow. To his credit, he was able to pull off the pink short shorts on Hard Knocks as KC coach. Mad respect.
Yeah, we got a young QB in our division who is pretty good at picking apart the middle of the field. Lets play a soft zone in the middle and let one of the league's best MLB walk because he's not a fit for that system. Maybe he can go to Pittsburgh and anchor a SB defense...
A pretty broad question "favorable or unfavorable" opinion of a man. I think he's a genuinely good man, think I'd enjoy being his co-worker or neighbor, and appreciate his insights when he's been an analyst. He was not a very good NFL head football coach, and I don't regret the Jets moving on from him.
Ya Hackett's 3 yards up the middle and a cloud of dust was tough. He also called for a 6 yard plays on 3rd and 7. Lots.
Herm coached a lot of games with his #1 QB on IR or should have been. With his starting QB Herm's record was 34-25 for the Jets in the regular season. Without the starter he was 5-16. This included the fact that Chad should have been the starter all year in 2002 and should have been on IR late in 2004. The biggest difference between the Parcells Jets and the Bradway Jets is that Bill Parcells would never have allowed the Jets to start a season without a decent OL with the depth to cover at least one injury.
I liked Herm just fine. Any coach that gets us to the playoffs has a place in my heart... 'cept Coslet... he sucked. Are we gonna do a poll on Parcells next?
I loved him at first, but I will never forgive that shit-eating grin when he became head coach of the Chiefs. He had two years left on his contract here if I remember correctly - I’m not saying he deserved to stay, but he was just so pleased with himself when he went to the Chiefs. He was dead to me after that and had also been found out as a coach.
I referred to him as The Preacher. That's what he reminded me of. He was awful at game day coaching, especially clock management, but he sure gave one firery speech!
Junc may have loved him more than he loved Sanchez. His we will forever regret losing Herm crusade I guess was just a prelude to his Sanchez is the greatest QB ever crusade finally culminating in his everyone else is an idiot but NYJunc crusade. That being said I almost miss Junc but on second thought no and good riddance. This board is a lot better off without posters like Junc. The idiocy is one thing but the nastiness is what made me glad he left.
