ummm... because they're an old afl team, they're in our divison and have played them twice a year for 40 years?
a few reasons off the top of my head. 1. Don Shula was the coach when the Jets beat Baltimore in the Super Bowl. 2. Dan Marino was pissed off when he was not picked by the Jets, he really wanted to play in New York. 3. lots of transplanted New Yorkers in Miami, and Miami Phins hated hearing cheers for the Jets when they played there.
cheers guys...being a new fan, wasnt sure the reasons...do we have any other rivalries?? also, what are some of the biggest nfl rivalries?? cheers
I wouldnt call it a rivalry, but I cat stand the colts. Could be from all of those lovely 9-3 games back in the 80's when they were in the same division...
I thought the Dolphins moved to the NFC when Ricky was caught planting pot seeds around the goal posts.
Other rivalries include the Bills and the Patriots who are in our division and we play them twice a year.
The biggest reason is Shula. Weeb and the Jets humiliated him in SB III and when he came to the Dolphins it was with the intent of getting back at the Jets. To his credit he did it in record time and record style. In the early 70's the Jets-Dolphins rivalry was mostly on the Dolphins side, with the Jets fans really not caring all that much because we sucked. 1981 is when the rivalry finally became an equal obsession.
The Shoot Outs For me it started with the shoot-outs between Marine and O'Brien. What sealed it was the fake spike that pretty much nailed down another crappy year for the Jets. I love that we have owned them for the last few years especially after the way Marino owned us. Besides, we are division rivals. If they keep sucking they will be replaced by the Pats as our #1 rival.
