NC liked Mac?? Wow that’s a bad take. Although many around here and Jets fans overall liked him way more than they should’ve. I was never fooled by him.

Except that he was much improved in this area after his return from injury. Does he need to get better? Of course, but to say he "can't complete them" is hyperbole.

I'm not as certain as you that JD "misread the market". Maybe. If so, that sucks, but worst case it seems he learned from that. Or, he's sticking to his original blueprint of paying what he thinks it will take to build the team. There is a lot of evidence for this if you look at where he learned the ropes, and also look at teams that have been consistently successful: Patriots, Steelers, Packers, to name three, none of which overpay. In contrast, consistent losers DO overpay, and then continue to consistently lose.

To his credit (or more likely self preservation), Douglas realized he was going to have to swing bigger than he has in FA. He succeeded in some key places, but came up short, more so due the players involved didn't want to come to the Jets for various reasons, and it's unclear if he actually wanted a question mark like Cooper unless it was on more favorable terms - we can agree to disagree whether that was the right move, I think it was.

Everyone - as usual - is looking at this upcoming year as "make or break", while Douglas is viewing it as another incremental step in building a sustainable winning team. I'm okay with his approach, but he does need to hit a HR in the draft and the team has to show real sustainable progress this season, which to me means being around .500 and in the p.o. mix at the end. Another sub-6 win season will probably mean I just tune out until and if they ever do figure out how to win.

Cooper wouldn't stop us from getting these guy's, let's not create fake narrative. We went after Hill with these guys on the roster. JD is no so incompetent that he cannot fit Cooper, Tomlinson, and Reed, while Browns are fitting in Watson, said Cooper, Baker on 20 mil deal, and others. This was not about Reed and Tomlinson, don't make this false narrative. And JD does have to get at least one stud from the draft, which means he will be drafting 2 with high picks to improve chances. And if he hits, he will be proven right. If he doesn't and Cooper makes another Pro Bowl, it would be pretty shit.

You're right that signing Cooper wouldn't have prevented JD from getting the other guys, which makes me think it wasn't the money, nor the "principles", rather there were other considerations, like "red flags" that Douglas didn't really want unless he could gain some control over them by restructuring Cooper's deal. IF...IF... that were the case, I have no problem with that.

yeah that's not how it works. cooper was traded during the legal tampering, he didn't agree to a restructure yet meaning a trade would mean that before he could sign the guys he wanted he would need to restructure cooper which could have made him miss out on a lot while competing with 31 other teams for the same handful of players. obviously reed and tomlinson were big tickets for JD and hot free agents as well. so he wold have had to waste time dealing with coopers restructure before really pursing those guys. JD IMO 100% did the right thing. and listen I like cooper, i wanted him but I also understand realistic situations and that it's not madden and AI we are dealing with and JD had to make a choice and tomlinson and reed were more important. especially in a deep WR class with 4 picks in the top 38.

JD has also called about metcalf but was told he isn't on the market.

it wouldn't have if he restructured first which was the rumor. JD wanted a lower cap number for him in 2022 before making the trade, cowboys wanted him off the books before free agency so wanted to move him fast. cleveland was willing to take on the 20 mil and was gearing up for watson and not looking to sign FAs. they only signed a TE and backup QB but also released a C and TE which made it a net positive capwise. they knew they had time before watson was traded to lower coopers numbers.

Yep, I was wrong about Mac. He did just enough good things to give me hope. That isn't the same thing as with JD, however. I was highly suspicious of Mac when he was hired because of who recommended him, and the team he had worked for. With JD there's no question of his background, credentials and the teams he worked for. JD hasn't made any wild and ridiculous signings like Mac did with Trumaine Johnson. JD re-vamped our Scouting Dept., communicates and works closely with our CS, whereas Mac didn't, JD has exceled at trades, hasn't panicked in the draft or FA, has prioritized the trenches, there haven't been the leaks as there were under Mac, and everything is better.

Ok I should've added the term "consistently"

    Revised sentence:
"Clearly running an offense predicated on completing short passes with a QB that can’t complete them consistently isn’t working. "

    better?
    -

I realize now it has a double negative so maybe not haha

Doesn't it give you pause that if you changed the names of the GM/coach/players in the Mac defense post it would read exactly like one of your JD defense posts?

"He had nothing to work with when he got here, no GM could've done better so far."

"We don't know that (insert pick) is a bad pick yet."

"He can't help that (insert coach) wanted players he didn't want that ended up being bad."

"He signed the best players anyone could've during that FA period, and to good contracts."

"It wasn't (GM)'s fault the scheme changed." (Even though GM's basically choose to change the scheme via the guy they hire as coach)

Those are all examples from that Mac defense post. I mean come on dude, it's a literal copy/paste of your current defenses of JD.

People wouldn't be this harsh to you if you didn't constantly berate everyone who disagrees with you, by the way. You're entitled to your opinions of course but I really don't get the mindset of thinking everyone who disagrees with you is automatically a moron.

Maybe you wouldn't keep making the same misjudgments on GM's if you stopped for a second to consider the points of others and whether they might just be valid.

I appreciate the attempt, but you're still wrong. He did very well with the short passing game after he came back - not great, but he made it work. He did have a couple of "stinker" throws, and he needs to get more accuracy, but most of his throws were "on target" and his receivers let him down.

IDK which has been overhyped more - his Pro Day WOW throws, or his early season cringeworthy ones, but neither are what defines his game.

It has absolutely nothing to do with not admitting JD isn't perfect. That's easy. He isn't perfect. No one is. The idea that JD misread the market is utter nonsense imo, and frankly laughable that you think you read the market better than JD. The ego of you guys thinking you're smarter and more knowledgeable than JD is hilarious to me. JD didn't misread anything. He didn't think that Cooper was worth what he wanted, plus JD was backloading contracts to keep cap space this year. He wasn't about to risk Cooper and Cooper's agent not willing to do that. One can say that one thought it was a mistake to not get Cooper. I disagree, but that's fair, as it's opinion. But to claim that JD misread the market when he's been working in the FO learning from Ozzie with the Ravens, and with the Eagles, and a year with the Bears , is just laughable imo.

It doesn't make sense to you, but I'll bet that it did to MLF, Saleh and JD.

That's overstating it. I don't think I ever said I liked him. I thought he did some things well early on, even though I didn't like some things he did. I defended him when I thought people were being critical just to be critical, and I give people the benefit of the doubt until they prove they don't deserve it. That's what happened with Mac. I was patient, gave him a chance, but when I saw that he just was in over his head and had no clue how to build a team or judge talent, I stopped defending him and said that he needed to go.

i think tackle is definitely in play and ultimately completes the rebuild of the OL.

See if you can grab Sauce with #10 or trade back and pick up a WR along with additional picks.

Agreed. And I'd take it farther by saying that anyone here claiming there is any kind of ironclad "principles" test for who gets hired at what price, with what background, what injury history, what "character" issues or any other such qualifier is getting way ahead of anything that makes sense for a business that must constantly adapt to changing situations and is just plain wrong.

With all that experience how is it possible that he could misread the market for Robby Anderson two years ago, and now, farther removed from all that experience, is infallible at reading the market today?
