The Saints saw safety Marcus Williams agree to terms with the Ravens on Tuesday, while safety Marcus Maye saw his former team, the Jets, agree to terms with safety Jordan Whitehead. That left the Saints in search of a safety, and Maye in search of a new team. The Saints and Maye agreed to a three-year, $28.5 million contract with $15 million guaranteed on Tuesday night, NFL Media reports.
Happy he got paid after the terrible luck of suffering a serious injury on the franchise tag. One of the better players we've had over the last several years and his absence was severely felt last year. The deep middle was a sieve without Maye playing. Hello Kyle Hamilton?
Saints got a steal. I know he's older and has a dui on the horizon, but on the field he's a top free safety in the league. I though he'd go around $12 per. Good for him and good for the Saints! I liked him and wish him the best. He'll be a beast playing in a dome.
I am not sure they got a steal. Last off season JD offered 11 mil per, but Maye refused, so he had to play on franchise tag. He didn't really play all that well, then got a serious injury. Value came down a bit to 9.5 per, but still relatively high, which is good for him. However, I would much rather have Whitehead who is 4 years younger, and coming off of a much better year than Maye had pre-injury, plus he wasn't injured last year. And on top of it, 7 mil per, even though I would take Whitehead over Maye at this point for the same money. With all that said, how the heck can NO pay him 9.5 mil per? Aren't they significantly over the CAP? That SHOULD mean they have to get rid of players rather than sign 10 mil dollar ones. We are counting pennies while being well under the CAP, while NO is able to offer almost double digit contracts while significantly over it. How the hell does that work?
Marcus Maye was one of the very few bright spots the Jets have had the last 5 years. He was a really good safety and felt like a team player. Things went south in 2021 as he was not happy with the franchise tag and really did not look comfortable in Saleh's system. That's life, but I still appreciate all he did for the Jets, and I am happy he was able to get a good deal with the Saints after his injury. Hopefully he returns to form for them in 2022!
https://nypost.com/2022/03/15/marcus-maye-ex-jet-agrees-to-three-year-deal-with-saints/ Well Trade confirmed.. Maye to the Saints.
Another talented defensive player walking out the door for nothing in return. JD has jettisoned a lot more talented defensive players than he has brought in. Last in the league for a reason. I wish Maye well. Getting injured while tagged screwed him over, but I'm happy to see he still got a decent deal. Jets 2020 Team MVP.
What are you basing that comparison on, other than homering? Maye was 3rd highest rated safety in the league in 2020. Versatile enough to play both S positions at a high level as well. Jets team MVP, and earned a franchise tag.
When they are both in a game, I don't know who is better. But Maye missed a lot of games in 2021, plus he faces a suspension for the DUI (which, as I understand it, he was not forthright about with the coaching staff until some time had passed). I suspect a healthy Whitehead who is in the game has more of an impact than an injured/suspended Maye who is not in the game. Saleh and Douglas have talked about the disappointment they had with how many games their prior free agent signings missed, and how they plan to focus more on durability and character this year. I favor that approach. The most important ability in sports is availability.
he'll have about as much impact as JaMowf god. how nice the era of picking two overrated safeties is over. feels like a good puke after being nauseaous a long time. in ten years combines those stiffs had 10 total INT.
We all would like to keep the Maye from 2 years ago. However, he's not the same dude. Bad play in 21 Snapped Achilles Older (29) Incoming suspension for a DUI Glad he got some money though, he almost got chewed out the league with less than he deserved and gave us more than 17 mills worth of play over 5 years. We all liked Maye. But the reality is that he was reportedly offered more money by JD and declined. Then got injured. So what's your beef? And JD replaced him with a younger, better, cheaper option. Dude, bad take.
Tip of the cap to him. One of the few 2nd round picks over the years that at least belonged on the field. I always liked Marcus. His INT against Miami a few years ago was one of the most spectacular I've seen in a Jet uniform.
Good for him. Won’t miss him, but good for him. We got a cheaper, better, younger, more sober replacement.
