Biggest Surprise Chad Pennington - We knew this guy had the right head, attitude and base talent for a winning QB, but I do not think most people expected his body to hold out for an entire season. He has proven a lot of people wrong and has been named the comeback player of the year. Jericho Cotchery - I considered this guy to be a nice 3rd receiver working mostly out of the slot, but he has turned out to be a very good #2 receiver with great hands, can catch the ball in traffic and gets plenty of YAC. Leon Washington - Everyone said this guy fell in the draft, but we really did get a steal with this 4th rounder. This guy is a difference maker and that is what wins games in the NFL. Nick Mangold - He was a first round pick, but this guy has been awesome. I was upset that the Jets let Mawae go, but this guy stepped in basically from day one with little drop off following a perenial pro bowl veteran. I would argue he has looked better than D'Brick all things considered. Biggest Disappointments Erik Coleman - The guy came out like gang busters in the first half of last year, but in my opinion has really fallen off this year. His tackling is suspect and he has been burnt on a number plays. Kevan Barlow - Not that I expected this guy to be the next LT, but he really did nothing this year besides the game against the Pats. Kimo - Gets blown of the line. Never see him in the backfield. Jonathan Vilma - Not that he had a bad year, but it took him a while to adopt to the 3-4 and he didn't have the same presence on the field, disrupting plays in the back field, etc than I would have expected. Again I know the system changed his role, but I expected him to dominate more. Most Potential Justin Miller - This guy has all the raw materials. He has blazing speed, good size and hits hard. If he improves his technique and plays smarter he can emerge as a very good CB or even Safety. Brad Smith - Guy has great skills, just not sure where he fits in...
Biggest suprise - Jerrico Cotch Biggest Disappointment - Anthony Schlegal - 3rd rounder we barely saw Most Potential - Brad Smith
biggest surprise- Pennington started 16 games and played well enough to help the team qualify for postseason play (Cotchery? No surprise at all. I fully expected 82-961-6 type seasons from him way back in 2002. That year, at N.C. State, I thought he would eventually make a nice replacement for Wayne Chrebet. I was ecstatic when the Jets actually drafted him a year and a half later.) biggest disappointment- Anthony Schlegel and Derrick Blaylock most potential- D'Brickashaw Ferguson. The guy was good this year. He has the potential to be great.
Biggest suprise - Chad Pennington I never thought he would come back and be this good. Biggest disappointment - Schlegel.I think he needs more time on the field to be productive. Most potential - Kerry Rhodes. This guy has shown he can be one of the best and I think he will get better. He should have made the pro bowl this year but I think he will get recognized more next year and get in.He should be a huge part of our defense for a while.
Yeah, we already have Cedric, Blaylock and Washington. Maybe a trade in the offseason? Biggest potential: All the 06 rookies
Biggest surprise: Chad. I fully expected him to replaced by Week 4. Biggest disappointment: Kimo. I would say Barlow but I expected nothing from him. Most potential: Leon Washington. He could be the next Tiki Barber or Warrick Dunn.
Instead of individual performances I want to look at the groups Surprise-The OL and the DBs. Pennington stayed healthy this year because the OL played well together for a first year unit. (2 Rookies plus a New RT as well) And the Jets have given up the least amount of big plays (20+ yrds) all year. And 3 of them came against the Bills. Disappointment-The Running game and D Line. Barlow was a waste. I understand taking the chance but looking back it would have been better to keep the draft pick. Washington is a good 3rd down kevin faulk type back, but we need a bruiser to help him out. Maybe Cedric Houston is the guy or maybe we will be drafting the best available RB at 22-32 this draft. As much as Robertson has stepped up this year I dont think the D line played all that well. I was expecting more out of Kimo and Ellis. Didnt happen. Most Potential-The Jets O. Pennington was 16 TD 16 INT in his first year in the O. Once they get him an everydown back and the O line can gel more he will run this no huddle as good as anyone. I also wouldnt mind them cutting ties with McCariens and bringing in more of a consistant WR (Terry Glenn, Travis Taylor, Joey Galloway??) Just 3 names off the top of my head that could be available come June. Or maybe we spend a 2nd rounder on one (we have 2) Just my thoughts
Biggest Surprise - Chad Pennington + Nick Mangold + Justin Miller Chad Pennington started all 16 games and led the Jets into the playoffs. Nick Mangold is playing like he has been in this league for a very long time. Justin Miller as a returner has been a big surprise, he has really effected the game in giving the Jets great field position. Biggest Disappointment - None. I would say Kevin Barlow, Anthony Schlegel, and Derrick Blaylock but I didn't really expect much from them anyways. If I had to pick, I think it would be Shawn Ellis and Erik Coleman. Most Potential - Leon Washington + Brad Smith + Kerry Rhodes Leon Washington has great speed, nice cuts, and can be a serious game changer. Brad Smith has shown to be a do it all type of player, RB, WR, maybe even a QB soon. Kerry Rhodes, had a extreme good season, deserves to go to the Pro Bowl.
Great thread: Ok I am going to be a little different. Here is a general answer than a more specific one. General: Biggest Surprise- The Team. Everything about it, specifically how well it was coached, how well it executed and how well it competed. Biggest disappointment-The Buffalo Bills game. Most Potential- I think this organization in general has all the potential in the world to be a championship caliber team in 2 years with some improvements. OK more specific: Biggest Surprise- sorry but there are quite a few: 1.) Mangini/Tannenbaum- looks to me so far that Mangini can coach the hell out of a football team and Tannenbaum is a good GM/Personnel guy. 2.) Schottenheimer- He will not be around very long nuff said. 3.) Coles/Cotch- Both tough as nails and excellent recievers 4.) Mangold- going to be All-Pro for many years 5.) Rhodes- read Mangold 6.) Improvement- I personally have never witnessed so many players improve like this right before my eyes......... Hobson, Robertson, L. Washington, E. Coleman, E. Smith etc. etc. there are more...... 7.) Pennington - Does more with less than any QB I can remember and a true leader and inspiration. If only he had a cannon. Biggest Disappointment : 1.) Run defense- Sometimes the opposing team can drive a truck through the holes. 2.) Lack of run offense- It has improved but it really is not a solid running attack yet. 3.) Schlegal/Barlow/A. Jones/Teague/Barrett- Nitpicking but these players showed nada this year. Exception is Barlow with the goal line running and NE game. Most Potential: 1.) Ferguson- You heard it here. He is going to come into camp next year and be a revelation. He will be bulked up a bit and better able to meet the huge expectation of fans and bullshit criticism of his critics. 2.) B Smith- As above except he has no real critics at this point. 3.) The Team- I firmly believe in two years they will be Champion caliber.
Biggest Surprise: Victor Hobson He went from total waste last year to big play, sack guy. He is going to be good here in the 3-4 for the next couple of years. Biggest Disappointment: Not seeing the Brad Smith pass all year. I know it is in the playbook. Where is it? With Brad Smith back under center last week, are we setting NE up for the pass? We will see sunday.
Biggest Surprise: Id say Hobson and Thomas, as in I would have expected that one or the other would end up with nice looking stats, but never both. These guys have really taken to this defense, Im excited to have both of them around here long term... I see Hobson in this defense being what Mo Lewis was to the Jets of the late 90's. Biggest Disappointment: More of a personal disappointment, but I was disappointed that Curtis Martin didnt make it back... I really thought he had one more in him. Everything else Edwards did that fans hate him for, I didnt mind, but wearing Martin down the way he did over the years pisses me off... he was getting old and weve always had other backs around, there was no reason to run him into the ground. On a related note, Barlow is clearly the biggest disappointment on the team, as he was brought in here to be the guy taking the bulk of the carries and now barely gets off the bench. I smell an ugly divorce coming... his comments indicate that he thinks hes gonna be able to walk in next year, recovered from whatever injury he blames this season on, and waltz into a starting role, but I dont see that happening, and Id bet hes gonna run his mouth about it. Most potential: Obviously Ferguson. This is a guy who has clearly been worn down by the whole rookie year thing... college season ends, nonstop workouts through the draft, minicamps, training camp, pro football season starts. Id love to know what his actual weight is right now... Id bet hes down around 270. A full offseason to put on some bulk will lead to a much improved sophomore year for D'brickashaw.
Biggest Surprise: I have to say Nugent.. I seem to be doing less cringing this year. Biggest Disappointment: The Cleveland Game... Most potential: Leon Washington.... The next Westbrook
my biggest surprise is the offensive line. chad did'nt get killed this year! disappointment- chris baker potential- justin miller. we need a special teams td this weekend.
