The defense was such a disappointment. Zach could get way better and we'll still lose games if the defense doesn't dramatically improve.
The below is from an espn+ article. I like the man's use of the DVOA statistic and his ballsiness to come right out and state the conclusion. https://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/in...-garoppolo-trade-alvin-kamara-sign-jc-jackson Draft or sign a new starting quarterback. The Jets did not have the roster depth or talent to support rookie quarterback Zach Wilson's transition to the NFL the way the Patriots did for Mac Jones. Therefore, Wilson's meager 55.6% completion percentage, 9-11 touchdown-interception ratio or 3-10 record are not definitive evidence that he is a bust. But there is a thin line between patience and over-commitment to a sunk cost. Wilson hung red flags such as his third-highest 3.0-second average time to throw and the disparity between the Jets' 17th best pass block win rate -- 61%, ahead of the Bucs (60%), Colts (60%), and Cowboys (58%) -- and fifth worst adjusted sack rate (8.6%). And the Arizona Cardinals provide precedent as a team that recognized and admitted its mistake in drafting a top-10 quarterback in Josh Rosen, and they quickly rebounded to win eight and 11 games in mulligan top pick Kyler Murray's second and third years in the league. With eyes on Wilson's development in house, the Jets are better equipped to make the necessary judgment than an outsider. But in his underwhelming rookie efficiency, Wilson did not provide much reason for optimism for his potential to become an above-average NFL starter. It's normal for quarterbacks to perform 5% to 15% below average as rookies and then develop into capable starters. Andrew Luck (-5.1% passing DVOA), Joe Burrow (-7.3%), Ryan Tannehill (-9.9%), Carson Wentz (-12.0%) and Derek Carr (-14.9%) landed in that former range in their rookie seasons and have since contributed 18 above-average DVOA seasons and made nine Pro Bowls. But it is unusual for quarterbacks to land in in the range of the rookie Wilson, who had a -32.3% passing DVOA, and later develop into plus starters. Over the last decade, similar rookie efficiency stats were primarily put up by busts such as Geno Smith (-23.6%), DeShone Kizer (-28.3%), Blake Bortles (-40.7%) and Dwayne Haskins (-42.0%). Nick Foles (-20.4%) and Jared Goff (-74.8%) produced some above-average seasons and even reached Super Bowls, but they couldn't convince their coaches to trust their successes to continue. Josh Allen (-35.9% DVOA as a rookie) is the only true rags-to-riches story at the position in recent seasons. And unless the Jets see some standout traits in their expected franchise quarterback, they might shorten their rebuild if they cut their losses now and draft, sign or trade for a replacement.. -- Scott Spratt
I think he was good in the Tenn game also. The thing about the Bucs game is they were playing with their second string pass rush as Barrett, JPP, and Suh were all out, Via came out, and both their starting safties were out. This gave Zach more time than if it was a big game. Plus, like Tenn, their defense came in looking flat expecting an easy go and got trapped.
IMO, he improved slightly toward the end of the season. Really he needs to improve at everything he does. 1) i saw the game start to slow down for him although he must make better diagnoses and proceed through progressions better. 2) He started to take what the defense was giving him toward the end of the season, he just needs to do a better job at it. 3) He stopped missing wide open bunny throws but he still needs to improve at that. Just because he did it for a few games doesn't mean he's out of the woods yet. 4) His accuracy must improve. He would miss a lot f throws we all knew he could make. Honestly, i think it was nerves but he still needs to calm down more. 5) HE's got to start getting rid of the ball sooner. He took a lot of sacks because he held on to the ball too long. 6) He needs to stop taking sacks when the Jets are in scoring position. If we're at the 20 and Zach starts getting pressure? GTFO out of the pocket and park the ball in the 10th row. Keep field position and live to play another down. 7) Use his legs more often. Zach is a decent athlete. He does well running with the ball. He needs to do more of that. But more than anything he must get a better supporting cast. A cast that isn't as brittle as it was last season. Joe Douglas absolutely must add a lot more talent to this team. Last season, Zach had almost as little talent as Sammy did. That's unacceptable. It's not all Joe Douglass fault, the prior GM is primarily responsible, but the 2020 draft is nothing special. It's turned out to be disappointing if anything so far. Joe Douglas must use utilize free agency more. The Jets simply do not have enough draft choices to fix all of their woes. Even if JD trades down and collect more picks that still won't be enough. Safety and TE are gigantic gaping holes. The Jets could also use a Fullback and a better Kicker. They still need a CB in the worst way. They still need a linebacker. It's impossible to ask JD to draft all of those needs and yield great players. The draft is too much of an imperfect science for that.
He can learn a lot from watching Montana throw to Roger Craig.https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...wqsBegQIDBAE&usg=AOvVaw2BQIoq89m6t8X8RqOPb8Yt
I can't think of one aspect of the game he doesn't need to improve. He's a rookie, more often than not they need to improve across the board. He needs to take how he finished the season (much better on short throws and taking good care of the football) and combine that with the ability to make plays and score touchdowns. He was pretty bad across the board last season, so I dont see any areas where improvement wouldn't be welcomed.
I don't know which specific games you are comparing but that doesn't matter regarding the article. What matters is the DVOA stat and its ability to predict future performance after the first year.
Not good, but better than Mac. Mac vs Buffalo: 2 for 3, 19 yards, 0 Tds, 0 interceptions 14 for 32, 145 Yds, 0 Tds, 2 interceptions
