If he’s released in the next few days and he will be eligible to sign anywhere immediately. I still don’t think it’s likely because he will have a ton of suitors, most of them probably more attractive than us, but man if we could have him signed before the draft? That opens up so many doors.
Just a thougth....FAs (at least the good ones) hope to get on a playoff bound team with a shot at getting a ring. In other words, they look at the WHOLE team, including the defense. I get that the offense is the first place a FA WR would look, but the whole team needs to be good to attract the top FAs. So JD/Saleh building on the D-side could help attract top FAs down the road. That's all!
Cooper was set to make 20 million per year. What do you think the Jets would have to pay to come to their 4-13 squad? Not happening.
what other teams are in the market for a high priced receiver? I agree that Cooper will have at least three other destinations more attractive if money is equal but the market may actually help us out here.
Agreed. If we want him, we'll most likely need to trade for him. He has a minimal dead cap hit in 2023 and 2024 if we cut him and no guarantees left. I'd send them a 5th and ask him to restructure. If he doesn't then I'd take it year by year. He helps us in 2022, and gives us flexibility in the draft and one less position to focus on in FA. I would still draft a WR on Day 2. Is he elite, no I don't think so. But he's good enough to help Zack and the offense. He's also a good fit for what we do.
I doubt many teams are going to be able to pony up 4/5 years for a 17 AAV (Similar to what A Rob would command) - Unless he takes a serious pay cut to go to a contender, the Jets can definitely be in play for Cooper
To find out Cooper’s suitors, we need to think about teams that have a desperate GM willing to pay for a perennial disappointment. Are Tanny or Mac in new positions yet?
You're a Jets fan and you have the nerve to call a guy that has 5 seasons of 1000+ yards, a career LOW of 5 TDs in a season and averages 65 catches per year a perennial disappointment? How long have you been a Jets fan?
I think he would want more to than 17AVV to okay for a perennial loser and then we'd be getting a guy who is al about the money. No thanks.
Even if we signed Cooper, or any free agent wr, I still want a receiver relatively high in the draft.
Free agents are only for 2-3 years tops. Davis isnt guaranteed past this year. Cooper,Moore,Davis would still have us needing a wr for 2023. Cooper, Moore ,Davis, high draft pick, Berrios gives you 2-3 of relative stability at the wide out position.
Long enough to recognize the similarities to Bell and Mosley. I know you’re used to being excited about big signings but not 1 Cowboys fan nor 1 Raiders fan was sad to see him go. Let’s go all in and overpay for Clowney too
If the Cowboys didn't have three high-priced FAs to bring back, Cooper would still be there as their WR1. This isn't a talent issue.
We have so many needs that paying 20 million to a WR would be a Mac move. Fortunately JD is Mac n' Cheese.
What cowboys fans are you talking too? I’ve seen a lot of complaints today about this rumor from them..?
I married into a diehard Cowboys family and ended up in some of their circles. Almost no one is happy about this news and the only people that are happy are happy because they want Gregory and Schultz back longterm.
Why are people assuming we'd pay $20 mil for Cooper? That's obviously the complete opposite of what Douglas would do. If we trade for him then it would without a doubt come with a restructure or extension to move some money into the next year or two. If we sign him it won't be for above what Douglas has set in his mind and it's most definitely not $20 mil a year.
Do you know Bob from across the street? Steve from the bar? The Burgess brothers? Were you expecting to know the same people I know?
