9 is the ceiling I have for the 2022 team if a lot of things go our way. Zach takes a big year 2 jump, Moore and Carter develop, another WR contributes, a competent TE is on the team, the defense improves to below average. A lot of ifs, but each one is plausible.
I’ll try to reply to everyone in one post instead of 10 separate ones. -Alec Lindstrom: I think it’s realistic he can be had in the 4th. If he was so likely to go in the 2nd, he would have been invited to the Senior Bowl, but instead he’s just a Shrine Bowl participant. The SB staff puts together the roster based largely on feedback from front offices, i.e. the players that scouting departments request. He’s also a zone scheme specific player so it limits the number of interested teams I think. As far as whether he should LS, I think it would be fine but I’m also fine with keeping Hennessy and dropping another roster spot. I do know that the Shrine Bowl staff is intentionally having him LS to show off that skill so I’m not sure why they’d do that if it wasn’t useable in the NFL. 2 TE’s: There are only so many cap dollars to go around, and 2 TE’s who can develop within the scheme are going to pay dividends over the next 4 years. Also, depth is key, and if 1 is injured you still have another. One thing I tried to attend to is leaving Wilson without weapons in the case that a starter is hurt. Kroft is just a 1 year plug. 2 RB’s: The explosive RB is RB1 in this scheme, and Conner is a key 3rd Down piece. If Carter misses time, that makes Cook RB1. A mistake I see a lot of teams make is when RB1 goes down, they use the change of pace player as RB1. It totally changes the dynamic of the offense. What if the Jets make the playoffs but Carter has a Week 18 injury? I want the explosive Cook as RB1 and Conner to maintain his change of pace/3rd down pass pro role, and allow the offense to continue as designed. Scherff: I’m tired of a revolving door at the OL. I’ll be honest, I didn’t even consider a Bears OL in free agency. If he is a worthwhile starter, why would their trainwreck of an OL allow him to walk out the door? If they have to replace 3-4 starters, why let Daniels go and have to replace 4-5? If they let him walk, that tells me all I need to know. I want a dominant RG who will be just fine in the scheme, and Tomlinson has been exclusively a LG which is why I didn’t go with him. Scherff has had some injuries, but frankly we’ve seen a lot of players healthier and excel outside of WAS. Their double Franchise Tag on him tells me all I need to know about how valuable he is. Draft: The draft is really just a projection obviously, but I wanted to do the full 2 Round Mock so that when people say “he wouldn’t be available here” I’d have something to base my selection off of, and then you can debate who you think a team would select vs another, and then I can offer my reasoning for my picks. Did I miss anything else?
I have to side with Max and disagree here. TE is a very important position in our offensive scheme. Just one good TE or even two is not sufficient as MLF wants to run 2-TE schemes, and we need at least one quality backup in case of injury. We need to stop trotting out JAG players at playmaking positions on offense and defense. In this offense, TE is a playmaking position. I'm all for signing a TE in FA and drafting two. I'll keep Yeboah or Wesco if I have to for another year, but if I'm the GM Kroft won't be back, neither will Griffin and we need 4 TEs. I tend to agree with him on the RB position as well. Perine needs to go. Carter and Conner only gives us 2 RBs and they want 4 in this scheme. IMO Johnson should not be back. He can't catch the ball and can't or won't block, and maybe still doesn't know the offense. We might be able to keep Walter as the 4th RB, but I think we need at least 3 quality RBs. Ensuring that we have good depth at TE and RB will help support Zach and help enable him to succeed, just as much as adding a stud WR and depth at WR. IMO if we're serious about supporting Zach and helping him develop, then we cannot put players like Griffin, J. Smith, T. Black on the field ever again, even if it means not doing as much with the D personnel this offseason as we'd like to.
I just don’t see how a position that’s generally manned by a 240 pound linebacker type (long snapper) is going to be taken over by a 300 pound center. Lindstrom is going to run down field 3-5 times a game and tackle the punt returner? It’s the third most important player on punt coverage. You could be right on where he’s drafted. I don’t know where he ends up getting taken, but isn’t he generally considered the second center on the board? You’re looking at a 100 pick gap between the first center and second center. RB; I’m not against a veteran, but I think Conner would want to be RB1 where ever he signs, and more than a 3rd down back.
Thanks. I knew you'd have a sound rationale for the decisions you made. Hearing that helps. It still doesn't mean I agree with everything, but hey, no one said that we had to agree on everything. It would definitely improve the team. The only thing I think would be a big mistake would be Scherff. I just don't see him as a scheme fit or being able to stay healthy. I also can't see JD spending that kind of money on an oft-injured player who is already 30. That's the kind of move that is antithetical to him.
Trading down from 10 and picking up another 2023 1st round is a key to this being a successful draft. Turns the Jamal Adam's trade into a gift that keeps on giving. Imagin if we trade down, pick up a 1st, AND take Kyle Hamilton with our traded-down pick??? holy cow now that's toooo funny to even think about. Plus by parlaying some of our draft power into 2023 keeps a blind eye on the success (or lack-there-of) of Zack Wilson. God forbid we're back in the QB hunt in 2 years but having multiple 1st round picks would make the pain a bit easier to swallow. But anyway, we've been spoiled by having multiple high picks. It makes threads like this and the draft really interesting and fun to follow. Keep the fun going another year! Won't be too long before our only pick comes after 25 or more of the best players have already been selected.
right now my main thought process is take hamilton at 4. trade down from 10 to the middle of the 1st and get 2 2nds (1 this year, 1 next) then take dean or lloyd. then with out 3 2nds we can get cameron thomas, a TE, and a RG, that means with our 1st 4 picks we essentially get a playmaker at all 3 levels of defense (edge, 3 down LBers, generational safety) plus a TE and RG and a future 2nd rounder. that gives us a ton of flexiblity with the rest of our picks with no major needs. maybe a 2nd TE or O-line to develop or DT or RB etc and an extra high pick next year too
On many teams second rounders are real assets that secure real players our team however seems cursed in the second round -- even Marcus Maye seems a goner. The rest of them we actually wanted (or presently want) gone. Just hitting on second rounders who can make a real contribution would do so much for us.
Just one site I guess but they have him 4th centre. https://www.nfldraftbuzz.com/positions/C/1/2022 This one he is #2 https://www.drafttek.com/2022-NFL-Draft-Position-Rankings/Top-College-Centers-2022-NFL-Draft.asp
He could go earlier than 4, I know Zion Johnson can play C and G and a is a better prospect. In 2020 the 2nd C didn’t go until 78 overall so who knows?
Daniels from Chicago also plays center… The franchise tag would be $16.5m for an OL this year so idt he’s getting tagged. At 24 he’ll be a long term investment for whoever signs him.
I’ll take a look at him on film if I get a chance, it just doesn’t make sense to me that an offensive line as ugly as the Bears’ was would just let a decent player go. Maybe he’ll turn out to be a good player lost in the shuffle of a new GM and HC, it just seems unlikely so I want to see for myself. I understand he has a PFF grade of 71.0 but GVR has a PFF grade of 68.1 so… either their ratings are trash or Daniels is barely better than GVR.
Does Chicago use a wide zone blocking scheme? If not, he might not be a great fit in their scheme. Coming out of college he was said to be a great fit for a zone-blocking scheme, and he played C. He may be better at C than OG. Keep that in mind when you evaluate him. PFF means crap me to me. I think they're rarely accurate with any of their assessments. I don't know how Daniels has played in the NFL, but remember that he was a great prospect at C coming out of college.
The Jets barely utilize that TE position and you have them taking two in the first four rounds? One of those picks can be used to replace Cameron Clark who just retired. I like the Burks pick just hope he last that long.
They ran a version of the Andy Reid West Coast system the last few years but they are hiring Luke Getsy from GB as their new OC under Eberflus now. Getsy I assume will run a Shanahan style system since he came from Matt LaFleur’s staff in GB.
The Jets also don’t run the truest form of the wide zone like McVay’s Rams do or the Vikings have. We’re closer to the 49ers and Packers that incorporates inside zone and such.
The Jets second most used personnel grouping this past year was 12 -- meaning two tight ends. The style of offense the Jets want to run requires high quality TE play and the TE position for the Jets has been an absolute black hole since they lost Dustin Keller. It needs an entire rework. So yes, the Jets should absolutely consider drafting two TEs this year IF they don't add one in free agency, especially considering it's a solid TE class. Going to make an a quick edit/addition to this. The Jets used 11 personnel (3 WR) 61% of the time, 12 personnel 20% of the time, and 21 personnel (2 RB) 5% of the time. Here's the source. https://www.sharpfootballstats.com/personnel-grouping-frequency.html
It's informative posts like these that I joined this board and remain here, despite all the other "noise". Thanks!
