This is a lesson the Jets really need to learn. Taking self-centered players may occasionally work on a very good team since the locker room can keep them in line. However taking those players on a last place team is a disaster in the making. There's no "I" in team and if you're building a team you need 100% players focused on being part of a great team. Any time spent focusing on personal stardom is a complete waste on a bad team.

Maybe someone can shed some light, but the more I keep hearing about Hamilton the more I think Jamal Adams. Seems to be much more in the box than center fielder-aka Jamal..Am I missing something?

I really went the Iowa Center too btw

Hamilton has shown his mobility in covering a wide range of the field, not just the box or centerfield. There's a short clip of him out there that illustrates that when ND played FSU; I think it was their first game of the season. He also appears to be more of a physical presence than Adams was.

You’re missing it pretty badly. He’s a classic center fielder who can tackle.

Missing out on both a pass rusher and/or offensive lineman with the 2 top 10 picks would be a massive mistake and a career ending mistake for Joe Douglas
    --

we havent had a decent edge rusher since John Abraham, going on 20 years now. We've had plenty of possession wideouts like Drake London

    100%.

Take the blue chip OT in Neal or Ekwonu, or take KT and have a really nice edge combo for 2022 + 2023. One of Hutchinson, KT, Neal, or Ekwonu will be there at 4.

Do not take a safety at 4.

thats very fair. You can't expect a mid round lineman to be ready to play right away but look at a like like trey smith for the chiefs this year who was a 6th rounder and had a solid year as a rookie. I do think depth is important but doesn't mean we won't sign a vet backup. Even the best GMs in the NFL make mistakes. I don't expect any GM to be perfect

I get that and as fans we are more "win now" then what a team may be. The more rookie starters you have and the more you try to develop the harder it is. as it stands now we have 5 in the 1st 3 rounds and 9 overall. if we traded back to add 2 more it would be 7 in the 1st 3 rounds. someone is going to get wasted away in that log jam. if we didn't already have extra picks in the 1st and 2nd I'd agree with you.

I get that, I was never a fan of the mims pick much to the issue of a few here. I just didn't see what people liked about him outside of his height/speed combo. I can see people being wary about london and i'm not saying i'm on board with him either at this point i have 2 months to figure all that out and i'm gonna look hard and deep at TE, WR, and EDGE for this draft for us. these are all early reports and could be smokesreens too. 1 thing of note though is remember JD loving AVT was leaked from someone at USC and it could happen again with london.

you have to remember for the draft it's based on rumors. if you throw out personal feelings on players and just look at it objectively it looks different. I get not wanting a safety at 4 but if he's the next ed reed, how do you pass on that? our defense struggled to create turnovers. jets were 2nd worst behind jax. getting a ballhawk safety could be huge. think of it this way, pas rushers get a sack it's a big play, but not a drive ender. S gets an INT and it ends the drive. INTs are the most impactful defensive plays. he's also a stud in run support. true he's not a premium position, but he's also likely the top player in the draft and if the top player falls to 4 the value is hard to pass on. as far as london goes, what if it was burks? if we swap out burks for london do you like the draft? It seems you do so at that point it's not the draft you dislike but the evaluation of players at the WR position. as far as burning picks to trade up, remember we got them for trading down. so we didn't burn pics we traded down, got extra picks and used some of those to turn a 2nd into a 1st all while keeping a future 1st. we came into the draft with 2 1sts, 2 2nds, a 3rd and 2 4ths. we walk out with 3 1sts, 2 2nds, and 2 4ths. same amount of players but overall better because a 3rd 1st over a 3rd. again as far as not liking johnson what if it was an edge you liked better? think of it more like this, if our top 3 picks are the bets player in the draft, an edge you like, and a WR you like you wouldn't be happy?

as far as OT and RBs go remember I only did the 1st 4 rounds here. that means we still have later picks (2 5ths) to address other positions which could be traded down into a 5th, 6th, and 7th. can get a RB and developmental OT with 2 of those picks. guys like cj verdall at RB and obinna Eze at OT. if we extend fant and we still have becton for 3 years that means OT won't be a need for a while outside of depth. we still have edoga for 1 more year who has proven to be a solid backup. I think people have unreal expectations of backups. they are backups for a reason and the NFL is short on o-line talent. it's not madden with a salary cap off where you can stockpile pro bowlers as backups. the leagues worst starter would be the leagues best backup.

I'm not sure why you are so down on kroft. he played well for getting a 2 million dollar deal. he's fine at TE2 IMO but realistically look at the TEs in the NFL right now. it's kinda thin. adding schults, keeping kroft and yeboah should be enough. we can't fix every group in 1 offseason. that's not a bad improvement by any means.

that's all good, I just want to make sure you understand it's based on rumors and JD's MO not my personal thoughts so if you trust in JD and ignore your personal preferences i'm not sure what's wrong with that draft outside of the lack of a TE but again we have free agency and JD has a plan.

    he was drafted in 2017
made the all rookie team in 2017
then in 2018 made the pro bowl and 2nd team all pro
then in 2019 made the pro bowl and 1st team all pro
then we traded him for 2 1sts a 3rd and a player. the player didn't pan out but 1 1st and 3rd turned out to be AVT, and the 2nd 1st is 10th overall this year.

so we got 3 years of elite play, and the 14th overall pick in 2021 and 10th overall in 2022 and didn't have to pay him a big contract.

sure you could say we could have had mahomes. so could have 10 other teams (more if you factor in trade ups) but he's the 4th best player taken in the top 10 (mahomes, garrett, mccafrey) and we were picking 6th.

Individual awards are great, but what did he do for the team? As the 6th overall player taken he should've been a major difference-maker, but he wasn't. But that's the nature of the position. The biggest contribution to the team he made was in getting traded -"Addition by subtraction".

positional draft value. it changes each draft.
we also have spent 2 1sts on o-line in the past 2 drafts as well as paid good money to fant and mcgovern. our only weak spot is RG. it's not worth taking one in the top 10 of this draft. we could address that in FA as well. remember this is based on rumors and we are supposedly working on an extension for fant and letting him compete for the LT spot. he was a top 10 LT last year in the NFL. if that puts becton at RT i don't see why we need another OT that high. it means our starters are locked in for the next 3 years.

when you look at edge guys remember we have lawson coming back. and he's under contract for 2 more seasons. we also have JFM who just got extended. when you look at the draft you have 2 T1 guys in KT and hutch. both are likely gone before we pick. then in the T2 you can a group in which nobody has really separated from with guys like karlaftis, ojabo, ebiketie, jackson, thomas, johnson, enagbare, and possibly sanders, bonito, and walker.

the reality is we can get an edge guy at 35 who make be as good as the one we can get at 10 but we won't with WR. and we can trade down for more picks.

yeah i guess he never made a difference on the field /s

you know who was picked before him?

    1) garrett (stud edge)
    2) trubisky (bust QB, off the team and a backup)
    3) solomon thomas (no 5th year option picked up. 6 total sacks in 4 years, currently with another team)
    4) fournette (released for no compensation due to attitude issues, revived career in TB though)
    5) Corey davis (wound up being a good WR2 but not the stud WR1 you expect from a top 5, left in FA and on the jets now)

realistically outside of garrett we did better then 4 of the 5 teams who picked before us. any of them would have been better off with adams. he was the 2nd best player in the top 6 for 3 years and we traded him for a haul that's gonna build our team up now

Under your scenario- The 2022 Jets would look the same as 2021 Jets. Can’t stop anyone on defense and can’t get passes out consistently.

joe D could use that “positional draft value” argument in his next job interview though I guess, when they ask him why he failed as Jets GM

So if a river is 100' wide, is it sufficient to build a bridge 80' long? I agree that they should look to upgrade the OL in FA, but failing that, they absolutely need to complete the job in the draft. The best chance of doing that is with one of their first two picks. Yes, there's the possibility they could find a starting-caliber C or G later, but very unlikely, and they cannot afford to continue to let their QBs be ravaged and made to play under constant pressure. The good news is that once you have a solid OL you can usually maintain it for years, replacing/upgrading individual spots as needed.

I'm on record as saying countless times that I don't expect a GM to be perfect and that I think other posters are being too harsh in their evaluations of JD.

I disagree that additional players we gained via a trade back would automatically get wasted away. If so, then maybe we don't have the right CS.

I do remember that it was based on rumors. As a general rule I hate rumors/gossip. Most of the time they're not true, and much, if not most, of the time, they're idiotic in what they state or claim. I don't have "personal" feelings on players as I don't know any of them. My comments are based on whom I think would be the best scheme fits and best players for the Jets.

It's easy to pass on the S when you have a burning question at OT and there's a stud OT sitting there, or have a need at Edge and there's a stud Edge sitting there. Yes, we need a ballhawk at FS, but that is not more important than protecting Zach. It wouldn't matter if Hamilton turned out to be Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Troy Polamalu, and any other great S you want to name, if Zach winds up getting seriously injured because of a hole or poor play at OT. The Jets will only go as far as Zach will take them.

I want to believe that Becton has gotten pissed at Saleh saying he has to win back the LT spot, is working his ass off, and will come back in great shape and blow Fant out of the water in a head-to-head competition. Until that happens, however, I think it a mistake to say as long as we have Fant and Becton we're fine at OT. Injuries are a part of the game. Both Fant and Becton could get injured again in 2022. I disagree with you that Edoga is a solid backup. I liked when Mac picked him and had high hopes for him, but he has been a disappointment. IMO he should never see the field again for the Jets.

I'm down on Kroft because he sucks. He dropped too many passes and dropped them in big situations. He can't stay healthy, and didn't even block all that well. He's a FA. I see no reason that we should bring him back. He sure didn't earn his spot and doesn't deserve a raise. MLF wants to run a 2 TE alignment around 15-20% of the time. If one our two TEs gets injured, that means that Kroft is back on the field. That should not happen imo. I have zero interest in seeing him kill any more drives by dropping passes. I'd rather keep Wesco.

And again you're ignoring the point - because of course you want to win the argument. It doesn't matter what any other team did, nor does it matter what you might project Adams would've done for those teams - and in fact, maybe you ought to consider that these teams passed on this "all world, difference-making talent" despite how they might have been improved by his presence. What matters is this: What did Adams the Safety do for the Jets team? Specifically, did their record improve significantly because of him? And again you try to give Adams credit for the draft haul Douglas got for getting rid of him and his me-first attitude.

Safety is not a premium position regardless of who plays it. There are very rare few who have made their defenses great by their play, but they are the exception that proves the rule. If the Jets were already a playoff team and had a good pass rush and good run stopping play, then drafting a Safety with a 1st round pick would be okay because if they were a playoff team they'd likely be drafting in the second half of the first round. But using a top 15 pick on a Safety, especially when there are so many other wholes is a luxury the Jets can't afford - it's like spending your entire food budget on caviar.

based on what exactly? it doesn't even count free agency? how can the defense not be improved with hamilton at safety and getting lawson back and adding johnson to the edge rush to go with huff and JFM and lawson?
as far as the line goes, health was an issue. even with the injuries we ranked 12th for o-lines. with fant and becton, plus mcgovern and AVT (who will be better with the experience) we just need a RG maybe we sign tomlinson or schreff. who knows?

people have a worse opinion of our line then reality due to the injuries. we ranked 12th overall even with the injuries. people don't have a perception. hell the bengals o-line is way worse then ours and they are in the SB. Now mind you, i don't agree with ignoring the o-line the point is that when healthy our o-line is pretty dam solid and we are 1 mid tier FA like a laken tomlinson away from a potential top 10 o-line.

I don't want to "win an argument" lol come on we are both more mature then that. football is a team sport. no 1 player makes all the difference except maybe the QB and even then what did stafford do for the lions for a decadede despite being a great QB oh and having a top 3 WR all time in calvin johnson with him for most of it? he left and went to an actual team and is in the SB now.

I never said safety was a premium position. we don't need a QB. football is a team sport. you build a complete roster to win. you take talent where it is and don't reach for need. that's how you wind up losing out on better players and having an overall weaker team. look at the texans for example. they had a good team, FQB, but a weak o-line. they traded for a FLT and reached for a RT in the 1st that should have went 3 rounds later and where did that get them? you can make that case that no 1 player makes that big of a difference because it's true (outside of QB)

Funny how none of those leaked 'Jets/AVT' stories ever made it to TGG....not that I recall anyway!
