Like everyone, I can’t wait to get a true #1 to get our passing game in full swing…. But the more I thought about it, the more I like the idea of going in another direction. What if Moore can be our #1? What if Davis proves to be the quality #2 we paid him to be? Would we be better served with 2 stud TEs? The run game would definitely be helped. Having a speedster like Berrios on the bench to add some counterbalance could lead to some interesting play designs. And draft value. BTW Burks and pick #35 vs #10 and McBride we get an additional difference maker if we go with a 2 TE Base scheme. Edit: for our purposes, we sign Shultz so it’s either Schultz, McBride, Davis, Moore and pick #10 Or Schultz, Burks, Davis, Moore, and pick #35
I’ve always liked the two tightend idea but if we go that route we need to add another (preferably powerful) running back. It also never materialized the way the Browns probably envisioned it as they have three capable tightends and had OBJ/Landry on the outside. Is that a Baker issue? Maybe. We’d also need to add a very fast receiver. Not the best route runner in the world, but a burner to stretch the field. Both tightends will need to be capable blockers. No one’s really been able to do it since Belichick took Gronk and the murderer.
Hard question to answer because our TE's are so bad that the relative increase in production we'd get with even a decent one would be bigger than the increase we'd get adding a marquee WR. Having said that I do think WR is a more important position overall. In the modern game you want to overwhelm your opponents with more weapons than they can reasonably cover at the same time. Corey Davis is who is he is. A pretty good receiver who is at his best when he's not the primary guy the secondary needs to focus on (because of AJ Brown for example). I'm really high on Moore but he's not a matchup nightmare. He's an extremely fast and quick guy with great vision. Sort of a poor man's Tyreek. A guy like London for example would demand safety or LB help a lot of the time to cover. He's just too big to be reliably covered by a shorter DB. You can't win jump balls vs. a 6'5 guy when you're 6' or so, it's just too big a difference in height and arm length. Anyway I'm not sure I've answered your question so I'll say I lean towards getting one good TE and adding a WR rather than focusing on getting two good TE's. I don't know how much value the 2nd TE would have. As Vilma said the only guy who's absolutely crushed it with that strategy is Belichick, and he had a QB who was insanely accurate and smart with the ball at all times. Now that I think of it, a London-type receiver probably plays to Zach's strengths more too. It'd be nice to have a reliable target for down the field bombs which Zach excels at.
I like the idea of running a 2TE sets. However, at this point and all the holes we have to fill, I’d settle for a good TE that can both block and catch. A good TE would probably make our WRs look a lot better than they’ve been looking and open up our offense some. Theoretically, we should be able to draft one and get one in FA.
11 personnel base with the ability to go into 12 personnel based on game situation. Take a WR at 10 and draft and sign a TE. There's no reason the Jets can't do both, in fact, if the Jets don't completely redo the TE room and add a rookie WR or a stud FA, it's a colossal failure on an offseason.
If we trade back at 4 I am taking the BPA who is a WR or Edge if still available Plus I would prefer a top WR there..so exnay to the 2 TE plan..don't wanna waste picks imo Just take a look at what happened last weekend Burroughs / Chase and Mahomes / Tyreek Hill Elite WR please for Wilson
100% Agree about the RB Wouldn’t Moore be that deep threat? He’s only a half step slower than Hill which puts him on a young Deshawn Jackson level. Literally, the more I think about a 2 TE base the more excited I get… an absolute matchup nightmare…. Oh you have a D that matches up? Now I’m going small and quick with 3WR and Berrios…. still a matchup nightmare.
There are 32 teams and not enough tight ends to go around. If we get a legit # 1 WR with Davis and Moore as WR2 and WR3 all we would need is one decent TE to set up our QB for success.
It's a position that has been extinct for about 20 years, as is pass rusher. To find our last pass rusher & Tight end you might have to check out the musem of natural history.
Sign the best TE you can in FA. Draft the highest rated WR you can in the 1st round. Look to draft another potential stud TE and WR in the later rounds.
SF does it, Juice is a TE, I don’t really care what they call him. He’s just a TE who lines up in the backfield often. In the modern NFL, Deebo Samuel is a WR who takes snaps at RB. Jalen Ramsey is a CB who takes snaps at S. When you look at his full skill set and usage, I have no idea why he’s not just considered a TE who takes snaps at FB. Just my personal opinion.
For me, it depends on who the players are. If I'm confident that McBride or Wydermyer can turn into Andrews or Kelsey, I have no problem pairing them with a good receiver/blocker like Schultz. It also depends on who the Jets would get at 10 if they forego taking Burks there to get McBride at 35.
