First thing I'd do this offseason is tell Becton how talented he is. He is much more talented than Fant and that's why we need him to move to RT. We need our best 5 on the line and Becton is lightyears better at RT than Fant. After re-signing some players but Pre FA Lineup Q Wilson RB Carter WR Moore WR Davis WR Berrios LT Fant LG AVT C McGovern RG Feeney RT Becton TE Yaboah DE Lawson DT JFM DT Williams DE Huff WLB Nasirideen MLB Mosley SLB Williams CB Echols CB Hall SS Joyner FS Pinnock RCB Hall Evaluation of needs. S means we need a starter, U means an upgrade would be nice, D means we need depth S - S LB - S + U TE - S RG - S WR - U DE - U CB - U RB - D Here are the future Starters I'm signing.... this is exhausting so I'm def not going thru depth signings!! Hopefully we can get LDT back but rumor has it he might focus on his medical practice. TE Dalton Schultz. He's the talk of the town, how could I not? G Brandon Scherff - The rebuild of the O-Line gets it's last piece (but the cupboard always needs to be restocked) SAM Anthony Barr - This time he's a scheme fit but would the fanbase rebel? Trade Alert: It's rumored the Falcons want hometown hero Kyle Hamilton to come lead their secondary. #4 + #102 + Mims = Calvin Ridley + #8 I really wanted to address Safety in FA but I don't think JD is investing big money into the position and I wasn't convinced any of the 2nd tier options would be an upgrade. For my Draft, I'm using the NFL Mock Draft Database so I can make the Atlanta trade but I'm not making any trades within the draft. #8 - Stingley was still on the board but I'm concerned with his injury history so I go with Sauce Gardner CB Cincinnati who has never given up a TD in his College career. #10 - Nakobe Dean LB Georgia our new WILL is much better against the run than his Utah counterpart. #35 - Kingsley Enagbare EDGE - With this deep of a class, I decided to wait on an EDGE rusher. I was really torn between Bontito and Enagbare but the latter left an impression at the Senior Bowl #38 - Daxton Hill FS Michigan - He played corner a lot this year but graded better when he played free safety his previous years. We all know JD loves versatilile players #69 - Breece Hall - I had 0 interest in drafting a running back but when I saw the opportunity to get some thunder for our lightning (Carter) with our 3rd round pick, I couldn't say no #114 - Jake Furguson - A deep TE class so I managed to get one of the best blockers who also has the skills to develop as a receiving weapon QB Wilson *RB Carter/Hall WR Moore WR Davis *WR Ridley LT Fant LG AVT C McGovern *RG Scherff RT Becton *TE Schultz DE Lawson DT JFM DT Williams *DE Enagbare *WLB Dean MLB Mosley *SLB Barr *CB Gardner CB Hall S Joyner *S Hill I like our starters from top to bottom and I like our depth in all positions sans OL. We have an injury prone right side of our OL so I'm wary but it's better than it's been in quite a while. I would be down to resign if Moses is willing to stay. He played next to Scherff for years so they have chemistry. Fant can back up Becton on the left side while Becton backs up Moses on the right.
I really appreciate the effort people put into these and also really enjoy reading them. I like attacking the TE void like this, but I would prefer we look elsewhere with our first pick. I also think Calvin Ridley has too many question marks and would need a big extension before we would really know what we have in him. But the starting line-ups do look better after your offseason!
I like the creativity in the draft trade. I really do. But whatever is going on w/Calvin Ridley scares me off 100%. No interest whatsoever in Scherff for all the reasons you provided.
I know people are scared of Ridley as they were scared of the “trouble maker” Diggs but I’m sure JD and his staff will do there diligence. I would have certainly preferred a trade down and gotten the players at a better “value” but the trades weren’t there… but the players were. Re: Scherff, it would be easy to say someone like Connor Williams from the Cowboys and say “just move him to rt guard” but that woulda been too easy… nothings easy for the Jets.
Overall I like it. I also have concern about Ridley, but if due diligence is done it's worth a shot and that would be a good trade. I wonder what his value is on the trade market. Like signing Schultz and addressing RG, whether Scherff or another starter who could hit the market like Alex Cappa or Austin Corbett. Depends on who gets free, fit and money. Would be funny if Barr chose to come here after what happened a few years ago. Is he competing with Quincy Williams for a spot? Nice draft. If Joyner is starting at SS, they should also add a prospect through the draft. I have a little concern at DT. JFM could probably play inside at least partially, but losing Foley I'd really worry about the run defense.
I like Foley but suspect he’s going to go get some snacks money and with Johnathan Marshall waiting in the wings, I don’t see us being the team that gets Foley his bag. We need an upgrade from Williams and Barr could be that guy. Williams has proven he can play but Barr would be an upgrade. Barr isn’t young so we wouldn’t be sucked into a long contract so we can still draft and develop LBs 2023 or 2024 I would have loved to draft another S but I only had so many picks. I’m sure JD could add a 2nd tier player for some needed depth but I wasn’t going to dive that deep in FA.
Ridley has one year left of his contract, which he's due to make 11 million. I doubt we'd accept a trade down for a questionable and expensive player who'd be a one year merc.
I will take your '22 lineup every day of the week, but signing Sherf, Ridly, Shultz, would be great but unlikely. All three would demand pretty hefty contracts & I don't see JD doing that, although I would like to see it. Don't forget we need aprox. 20 mil to sign draft picks.
Yes, I’d only expect JD to make the trade if certain questions are answered. I would never expect JD to make a trade if he hd as few details as I do. OBJ was a questionable trade with a big contract and it didn’t work out. Diggs was a questionable trade with a big contract and it did work out. I’m looking forward to seeing how the Ridley trade works out…. And Watson: if the Texans hire Flores, does he stay in Texas? What about Russell and Rodgers? I love the off-season.
We did the tear down. We’ve poured the foundation It’s time to put up the walls. Getting some proven vets right now lines up with the 5 year plan we know he went in with. 3 big moves might be too optimistic but I’d be willing to bet JD makes at least 2. *The SOJ version of my plan would be getting Njoku and Robinson on “prove it deals” and overpaying on Sherf who gets injured while signing his contract.
I am all about drafting a power back in the 4th or later this year. Somebody like AJ Dillion. Would not resign Coleman.
As I said, need bigger back to complement Carter, and I mentioned a guy like Dillion, who could be found in middle rounds. My opinion only.
We need a bigger back to compliment Carter but a similar one to back him up bc injuries happen. Just my opinion. Any offense that can make A. Walter look like a star is OK with me.
Much like Thuney at G last season everybody this year has Schultz just slotted in as our TE solution. And I'd love to have him on the Jets as much as every other forum member here. But honestly what really are the chances that would happen? Horrendously low right? 1 out of 10 shot? If the Cowboys don't find some way to keep him why would he choose to come to the Jets over the 20 other teams that would probably offer him a job?
If I were in JDs shoes, my first year would consist of getting rid of dead weight and not signing any bad contracts with any underproven WRs even if they were homegrown. Last year he was willing to go after a few bigger FA signings but he knew his team was young and nothing happens over night. This year, the foundation has some experience and it’s time to add more talent. I think JD is going to be more aggressive than we’ve seen him in the past. Not sloppy, but aggressive. I will be amazed if the Cowboys (they’re currently like 15m over the 2023 cap) manage to keep Schultz, Cooper, Williams, or Gallup. They’ve amazed me before but they can’t kick the can down the road forever. Edit: I just looked up where Schultz Is from… let’s just say he and Zach can book a flight together when they go home for the holidays and off-season.
Fun thread. A few reactions: 1. Ridley: Huge gamble. Mental health issues took him out of the last part of the season. $11M in cap space is too much to gamble on that kind of uncertainty. IMHO, we have too many needs to make that kind of investment in someone who may or may not show up. 2. We have a lot of holes on both sides of the ball. Despite everyone's hopes, I don't think we have enough draft picks and cap money to become a playoff team this year. I think 2023 is the first year that is a real possibility. But to get there, we don't just need to bring in talent, we need to develop the young talent we brought in already (Wilson/Moore/Carter) if we have any hope of a playoff-caliber offense. Those guys can't develop quickly with the current offensive roster. If JD doesn't place a priority on shoring up the offense, Wilson's just going to spend another season getting knocked on his butt before he has time to do anything. I would not invest all top four draft picks on defense, which is what your mock draft shows. I would put at least three of those into offense. 3. So, I would invest the two top ten picks on an OL and a WR, and one of the second round picks in another OL or a bruising RB to complement Carter. I would also spend whatever cap money it takes to bring in a great TE through free agency (drafting TEs is always a huge gamble, because their success rate is statistically low even with high picks). 4. While our D sucked at the end of the year, it actually looked pretty good at the beginning of the season before injuries started piling up. With Lawson back, many of our starters should be pretty good. Yes, safety is a need, but this season showed that our biggest problem (IMHO) was with depth that we really needed when starters went down with injuries. You don't need first and second round picks to solve a depth issue. So, I would use one of the second round picks on a safety, and then take "best defensive athlete available" with the rest of our picks to get the depth we need when starters go down. I know everyone is eager for a great edge rusher. But I think we already have that for next year in Lawson. I'd keep the emphasis on offense. But then, I do love me some good offense.
Good work @KingRoach I would take a gamble on Ridley but I don't think anyone really knows what's up with him. One thing I hate. I would not take a CB in the first round. Hall, Echolls and Carter II are a solid trio. The need to improve the pass rush is much more pressing IMO.
