I’ll admit I don’t know anything about those draft guys outside of the safety as I don’t follow college ball closely enough, but my initial reaction is that this is too weak on the edge and at LB…I think we need to address more. I’m not counting on much from Lawson…Achilles is tough for explosion, players…he may come back at 80% of what he was…he may never come back. I’d look to bolster edge in the draft, preferably in the first round
yeah, not sure about the S/C combo with both the 1st rounders... I could live with one of them with another impact position player. Would probably prefer Linderbaum over Hamilton considering where each would be available, but if both our picks are top 10, then I'm not sure about either
This is my technical question as a fairly casual fan. Concerning the dozens and dozens of times this year (often multiple times in a row) that the opposing team runs right up the middle and our defense just gets gashed for 8 plus yards every single time like a reverse meat grinder.... If you added Hamilton, maybe a solidly average linebacker from FA, and even just got Joyner back that would pretty much cease happening right? At least theoretically? From my perspective, aside from continuing to support Zach's development stopping that seems to be the most critical problem the Jets are facing. An absolute crying need and one of the reasons that I too am warming up to drafting Hamilton. He looks like a pretty legit player to me, and the bonus is that he seems to be exactly what the Jets need most at the moment which dovetails nicely with making him the pick he probably deserves to be on flat merit anyway.
Seems like TE overload. A position that they don't utilize much. I thought LaFleur would but he has been a disappointment along with the defensive coordinator. Nice job on the offseason mock up.
I think you have to be flexible and yes, be aware of positional value but you also have to play the draft board. It’s a deep Edge class and a deep WR class, and even a deep CB class. I’d rather strike on 2 Blue Chip prospects at positions of need, which are more rare in this class, and not get caught up in 1st round vs 2nd round. The Jets two 2nds are so high they are almost 1sts, so I say get elite prospects at Safety and Center, and then get fringe 1st rounders at Edge and WR. The the defense needs help, and the primary help comes at DE and S. But Wilson’s development is still key. We’ve seen what the offense can be, but we’ve also seen what it looks like with so little depth. We can’t just pretend the offense is good to go. You can’t have the OL fall apart if Vera-Tucker misses a game, or the rushing attack evaporate if Carter misses time. In this hypothetical, the Jets get help at OL, WR, TE, and RB, all while managing the board and improving every level of the defense.
The Jets like 12 personnel, they just haven’t had the talent to use it much. Keep in mind, this is a 90 man roster so plenty of guys will get cut.
You can find a good center in every round. But a big rangy safety is what the Jets need. They have the corners and Maye probably not coming back. Davis is more nickel type. Hamilton would make the defense much better. I thought Maye would be more of a ball hawk type safety like he was in college.
For starters, the Jets run a decent amount of wide 9, making it harder to stop runs in between the tackles. The Jets get abused on trap runs because of: 1) Their base alignment 2) DEs and DTs attacking upfield 3) DEs and DTs not doing a good job fighting off trap blocks 4) Poor LB play I don't really know if Douglas and Saleh will put a ton of valuable resources into the secondary to be honest. Their scheme doesn't really require elite CBs. Hall, Echols, and MCII are holding their own for being such inexperienced players. They do really need a FS with a lot of range but that won't fix the run game issues. The Jets run a lot of Cover 1 and you need a safety that can move from sideline to sideline in a jiff and Ashtyn Davis ain't that guy. I don't really see them taking Hamilton with a top 5 pick. The Jets are most likely going to put a high draft pick and some FA $$$ into the DL again, which is the most important part of Saleh's D.
Always love your stuff, Maximus. But I'm more eager to see V2. I know you're not a big fan of high-priced FAs, --- but IMO - those would be some disappointing leftovers. I don't think Jermaine Johnson FSU will get out of the 1st round. If he is there in the 2nd round (approx #36) though, - I would draft him regardless of what we did in the 1st round. Carl Lawson's contract $$ is only guaranteed for 2021 + 2022.
Assuming they aren't staying with the Nickel look as the primary base look because of the weak LB group, I would be pouring as many resources as I could into the defensive line. Saleh's defense in SF really wasn't effective until the left side of their Dline was addressed in 2019.
That's why I think the Jets will go with whoever they can get out of Hutchinson, Thibodeaux, or Karlaftis. All 3 would be valuable additions to the EDGE group.
I agree with everything there but it makes you wonder why they gave Franklin-Myers an extension if they are just going to replace him. Seems like a gap between the staff & front office
I don't think JFM is getting replaced. They rotate their DL a lot, I think Quinnen is their most played DL and he only plays around 60-70% of the snaps. The Jets are going target players at the edge spot rather than DT. JFM isn't a true edge player; he's much better as a 3tech where he can use his athleticism to beat guards.
JFM has ideal use as a DE on run downs and DT on rush downs. Between that movement and rotation, the Jets DL is begging for Lawson to come back and add a rusher to pair with him to n 3rd down. That will just improve JFM’s effectiveness.
Come on, we all know Crowder is signing with the Patriots and catching 90 balls from Mac Jones for the next 2-3 years.
