He gets one more off-season before I’m about done. His draft looks pretty good with AVT/Carter/Moore. That’s a very good core assuming they healthy and a culture changer on offense. He’s been trash in free agency and had a bad first draft. If he stacks another good draft on top of last year and his great trade acumen, then he’s a keeper.
When you draft an OL in the first round it has to be a sure bet IMO. Becton was not a sure bet when he was listed as compared to others. Was he worth a gamble? Maybe. He has to comeback and hopefully plays with passion and is a force.
I would not be surprised one bit of he's traded this offseason for a 2nd or 3rd. Hes had some public clashes with MLF, and the fact he's missed the season due to an 8 week injury I would imagine really pisses off a HC who's motto is all has, no break.
Becton went from a fan favorite to a complete bust overnight. Pretty unfortunate. I'm not ready to give up on him yet, but he plays a really important position, and clearly can't be counted on. That puts the Jets in a tough position.
If he pulled a hamstring from being overweight, I'd get it. But his injury this year had nothing to do with weight, no matter how much this miserable fanbase wants to claim it was.
Do you think being almost 400 lbs has anything to do with it taking him twice as long to recover as was expected?
It is hard to root for a guy with a 4-8 week injury and then misses the entire season. I sure hope he gets motivated because he can be really good.
The frustrating part about this for me is that Joe is an Oline guy and he got enamored by immense size in a league that changes trends like the wind. I'm not even all that bothered by the weight thing because offensive linemen tend to struggle there, but he's so big that it just makes it worse. It would have been smart to try to trade Becton before the season started and it got to this point.
The only reason I initially said to trade him was the fact that Fant has been excellent alongside AVT. I’m all for having more talented players but Fant going back to the RT spot is not in Jets best interest, he was not good at all there. You're also correct about his injury, I know we have a tendency as fans to get psycho about stuff but getting your leg steam rolled by a 300 Lb man is totally out of his control. I believe Jets are holding him back so they can trade him, sign Fant to an extension and draft more oline help.
A lot of NFL players toke up. They say it's a good pain reliever. I'm not sure if that's a reasonable excuse though. It's just a fact that MANY NFL players smoke pot.
I think this is fair. This offseason could break the tie on his drafts and we will have a better idea of which of his first two drafts was closer to the norm. It seems like we've had GMs who sucked at the draft AND free agency for so long, so having hope in one area is a big step up. Plus, as you mention, his trade acumen is a positive.
