Oh now we would have taken the pick? The idea of keeping Darnold led to the belief that the Jets would trade out of the pick to amass a ton of additional picks. So no, we wouldn't have gotten Pitts or Chase.

And we also would have had Sam Darnold looking the same exact way he always will, as he is with Carolina, and we would then have another wasted year and decide between drafting a QB in one of the worst QB draft classes of all time, or pay him $18 million by taking his 5th year option.

douglas isnt even half way through his 6 year plan. once again the ownership got duped into thinking oh its a process and it will take a half a decade to put a decent team on the field.

he hasnt done much well but here are a few things he seems good at. getting rid of talented players on a consistent basis. and not paying guys. and making guys feel unwanted and disrespected.

    great work

Ok cool. So they would've traded down and we'd have Darnold and 2 other 1st rounders right now. Even better than the situation were in

Keeping Sam Darnold and trading the number two pick does not mean that Sam Darnold would be our QB of the future or even our starter this year.

It would just mean using our draft capital to fix other problems and maybe add a couple future picks.

I posted at least one offseason plan suggesting that we bring in a cheap veteran (specifically Jameis Winston) to compete for the starting job and to have actual talent backing up whoever wins the QB battle.

We would also have more picks if we did need to start over at QB later.

Most Superbowl winning QBs were not taken in the top five picks overall but all of them had good offensive lines, weapons, and great defenses.

Winston resigned with the Saints the day after Brees retired. You really think he would have come here to compete with Darnold?

The Saints aren't paying him much.

There is no reason to believe he would have turned down more money from us.

I wasn't against this idea, but it was clear the team was going QB at 2. The Chiefs did something similar when Reid was hired, getting an established QB, then building up the OL and skill positions before pouncing when the QB they liked was available.

he's getting 12 million and a starting job. You think he would come here to be a backup? and that we would pay over 12 mil for a backup?

Which players has he made feel unwanted and disrespected? Robby was a mistake, and he admits it. Many here wanted Leo gone and got their wish. Adams was becoming a PITA and had to be moved. His play in Seattle is nothing to write home about.

There is zero chance Winston would've have opted to come here rather than be the starter in New Orleans. He wants to play more than a season as a starter. We would've probably had to give him a multi-year commitment or a boat load more money.

Cotchery. You need to give Douglas time. By the end of his 4th contract, we may field a team that is borderline competent. Key word is may.......

I agree with JV that PFF is over rated and often misleading. For example Landon Dickerson has not been terrible. He had some early struggles but he has been mostly solid on an overall shaky line. Plus he can play center or guard.

If we were set on taking a first round guard we could have taken Alex Leatherwood without trading. He has been solid and the Raiders love him. He is part of an o-line that is at the top of the league in total offense. Plus he can play guard or tackle. If we were set on a first round guard we could have stayed put and taken him without sacrificing our 3rds, which could have been used for a lot of positions. Or we could have taken Darrisaw at 23 and Dickerson in the second by staying put, and still have both 3 rounders. Or gone with any number of options?

There were solid guards in the 3rd round that we could have added for depth. For example Wyatt Davis was taken with our Seattle pick. He hasn't started because he is behind two solid starters but he is ready to go when needed, and will probably be better than GVR. Ben Cleveland would be another solid depth guy. There were also several solid LBs and DBs available in the third round.

I agree that AVT has been solid so far but when your rebuilding you need all your top picks. One solid player isn't near enough to turn things around. SO far the trade hasn't been the total disaster it would have been if AVT busted or got seriously injured. The trade hasn't been either great or horrible, its been serviceable. But it just wasn't the right move at that stage in our rebuild. That said, hopefully AVT becomes a solid starter for years to come.

Up to 12 mil with incentives and almost an ironclad guarantee to start. Yeah, he was coming here.
