time to man up people, there were alot of draft pick haters(D'Brick haters/Mario Williams slurpers) and bandwagon jumpers so post who u actually wanted vs what we actually drafted. Actual Pick - Desired Pick 1a. D 'Brick - D'Brick: I wanted D'Brick so I was happy with the pick initially and im still happy with the pick. Hes had his downs but has had alot of ups. 1b. Mangold - Deangelo Williams or Maurice Jones Drew: I wanted us to trade up for Deangelo Williams or draft Jones Drew. I knew Drew would be a poor mans Reggie Bush but i wouldnt have guessed he wouldve been better, But im glad we didnt. Mangold has been a ROTY candidate IMO and if we were 12-4, they would be raving about him instead of Marcul McNeill. 2. Clemens - any offensive lineman: This is when i wanted Deangelo or Drew and we needed some more o-line help, so i wouldve been happy with anyone from Jean Giles to Eric Winston. Only time will tell if the Clemens pick is anygood 3a. Schlegal - Dave Thomas or Domonique Byrd: Jets needed a pass catching TE and i thought the Jets were gonna be running tons of 2 TE sets. Thomas and Byrd were great in college and Dave Thomas in the pros actually looks pretty good. We drafted Schlegal too high. 3b. Eric Smith - Darnell Bing: I didnt know where the hell Eric Smith came from and im still not sold on him even though hes been good on special teams. Cant say much about Bing seeing how he was on IR for the whole season. Bing wouldve been a value pick IMO cause he could play safety and OLB. 4a. Brad Smith - Michael Robinson: I've been following Brad Smith since day 1 in college and knew all about him and loved him, but i liked Robinson more because he played multiple positions in college. Robinson showed he could be a great "slash" player, but Smith has been a pleasent surprise, exceeding what i though Robinson couldve done for the team. Glad i was wrong about this one. 4b. Leon Washington - Mike Hass: Washington has been amazing. I love Hass in college and I thought he could work well out the slot and be a Ricky Proehl type player(slow but finds the soft spots and has excellent hands). We lucked out with Washington. 5. Jason Pociask - Omar Jacobs: Figured we could groom Jacobs, he was a good MAC QB. He was a beast his junior year but fell off the following year. Hass was just phenomenal in college. Pociask was a waste. last 2 picks there werent many good players left except for Marques Colston, but who wouldve known. Saints lucked out there. Overall the Mangold, D'Brick and Washington picks justify this draft. getting 3 great picks and 1 solid pick(Brad Smith) out of 10 picks aint bad
I told all my friends, the Jets didn't need to make a splash in the draft this past April. All I said was they needed to patchup the offensive line. I was very happy that they got D'Brick. I was surprised that Mangold was available for the Jets 2nd pick. I was very happy that the Jets paid attention to the needs they had to have. If they didn't draft on their list of needs & wants and made a splash for no reason, then I believe this rebuilding process would have been a bit more longer than the type of season they had. Now when this magic season comes to an end whenever that is, I believe they will go back to the war room and prepare another wonderful draft. :jets:
I was with you, when Leinart got past the Titans, I wanted him. This panned out pretty well though...
I think maybe we should have gotten cutler. This kid is looking like a beast. I mean brick was a good pick but i think Cutler will be a great quarterback for years to come.
I totally agree with how it worked out. If Brick improves a bit and Pennington plays a bit better next year, our draft will have been great. I hate to talk draft when the Jets are playing in the PO, but my bro and I were looking at the team and here are the positions we still need to upgrade. OG, OT, TE, WR*, RB, DE, SS, LB. Jets aren't missing that many pieces from being elite on both sides of the ball, but they aren't there yet.
Same as phubba and JI2004, I wanted Leinart, Mangold, then OL in 2nd round. Can't say I was upset with Ferguson, though. I had wanted Young before the draft, but didn't want to trade up either.
I was hoping for Leinart at 4 but I wasn't at all disappointed when the Jets took DaBrick. I knew it was the safe choice and it has worked out. I was hoping that, instead of trading down in the 2nd round, the Jets would take Leonard Pope. But the jury is still out on Clemens - who knows how he'll be. And, at the least, the Jets got that 2nd rounder from Washington, which is now very valuable.
If you want to see who I picked take a look at my sig. Beyond the 1st round I didn't care too much as long as some needs were filled. I was more than happy with this draft.
I can honestly say, I wanted D'brick and Mangold, and we got them. I said over and over and stand by it, most 1st round QBs never pan out. And while its still too early, Leinart and Cutler are not blowing me away right now. Cutler just showed Sunday that he is no second coming of Elway; and Leinart didn't have much to show despite having the great targets at WR and a former NFL rushing champion helping him out. Had we drafted and given the starting nod to either, we would be a below .500 team right now. Now, as to Vince Young, he's done more with less than either Cutler or Leinart. Looking back on it, he would have been awesome. But then, you can't go back in time, and I'm still very satisfied.
Going into the draft, I wanted Mario and Mangold. Once Mario was off the board, I wanted D'Brick (or a trade down for Cutler).
I was one of the ones whinning that we didn't jump on the opportunity to take Bush,Leinert etc. I understood what we did,but thought we should have taken espcially Bush. I couln't be more happy with what we've done. For the first time i can remember, the rookie class are all invloved in the success.
Don't write off Pociask yet. If he recovers from his injury, he could turn out to be a Lorenzo Neal type FB that can also play TE in jumbo and goalline packages. In terms of the draft, I specifically DID NOT want Leinart at 4. If we stayed at 4 I wanted Brick, but I thought we should trade down a few slots pick up another second rounder and take Vernon Davis if we could. At 29, I wanted Mangold in a big way and was ecstatic when they picked him. He is even better than we could have hoped. With the second round pick if we picked RD1 at 4 I wanted Clemens, so I was also real happy when they got him and another 2nd rounder. If they had traded down, I was thinking McNeil and Clemens. So my draft would have looked like Davis, Mangold, McNeil Clemens in the first two rounds. Past that I did not have any super strong opinions but loved the picks of Washington and Smith even at the time, and I was hoping we "gave a shot" to Colston having no idea how good he really is.
i was waffling between cutler or vernon davis at 4..... i knew davis was to high at 4 but didn't think cutler was. mangold at 29 was a given as soon as they got that pick for abe. i think the choice of clemens was a bit early and would have liked to see another OL taken with that choice. i think clemens would have been there in rd 3. so if i was on the clock it would have been cutler, mangold, mcneil, and then clemens. re: colston - definitely a gem. IMO - there shouldn't be any gems coming from hofstra that escape the scouts of the jets. i mean, they are across the dang street. jil
oops, my bad..... instead of clemens i would have taken colston as my 4th player chosen. geez not a bad draft - cutler, mangold, mcneil and colston..... oh well - its always easier on paper jil
I remember wanting Jerrious Norwood and Chris Gocong in the third round. But they picked up Leon, and Bryan Thomas really emerged this year so I guess it all worked out.
Right when I heard that the Texans were going to take Mario Williams I wanted the Jets to try to move up to the Saints slot and take Reggie Bush. At this point I'm happy that didn't happen just because we needed the help on the O-Line. I wanted either Mangold or DeAngelo Williams (once we passed on Bush) with the other 1st round pick.
