Why do you think our run defense has declined so since 2004?

For most of the 2004 season, we had one of the best defenses in the NFL, especially in terms of stopping the run (the only year we had a great run defense in recent memory).

Last year, well it's kind of tough for me to remember since I kind of try to block most of last year from my memory, but it seems like we were better last year than this year.

I mean, the front-7 is essentially the same now as it was in 2004 except Ferguson and Abraham are gone and now von Oelhoffen/Thomas are in, But Abraham was never great against the run, and when he was hurt in 2004 and Thomas subbed in, a lot of people commented here on how much better Thomas was better at stopping the run than Abe, Is it all because of Ferguson? I know he was a really good influence on Robertson, who had a Pro Bowl-caliber year in 2004. Or is just the new scheme? Or do we miss Donnie Henderson?

We got the lead in 2004 a lot, so teams had to pass. A lot of those #s are skewed.

I think our run defense has been touch-and-go since Parcells left the organization, and I think a lot of it had to do with the light contact in practice early on under Herm. Ferg I remember hoping he would someday turn into a NT and then we switched to the Tampa Cover Who and that threw our personnel into total disarray, but that one year under Henderson was almost like a fluke to me. Ferg played well in that year but every other year he seemed to me to be a disappointment, and he didn't exactly light the world on fire when he left for Dallas.

Honestly, I think the run defense has suffered from a lack of a consistent coaching influence, and lack of fundamentals. The fundamentals are being instilled again, but this is another new system so we will have to wait for the consistency to take effect.

Look at yards per carry. And I'm not even sure if what you're saying about getting the lead a lot early is true anyway.

Barton and Kimo are too slow for a 3-4.

The defense is 2 or 3 upgrades from being elite.

    Bye bye to Jason Ferguson.

Yes, he's older and less effective than he was then but he and Robertson had a good year side by side.

Barton happens to be one of the faster linebackers in the NFL. That is not the reason. And the 3-4 is not based on speed, but size and covering gaps and taking care of your assignments.

Losing Jason Ferguson hurt, and we did nothing to replace him.

j ferg/d rob tandem...abe/ellis on the ends.....JV/EB/VH behind the line...thats why. ferguson was a good player for the jets. whether or not anyone here will give him credit i dont know. but he had a great year in 04...him and robertson were solid at the DT positions.

We were better in 2004 against the run, but not as good against the pass. Regardless of stats, that's what I remembered... That's another way the #s can be skewed.

Exactly right and Vilma was making tackles at the line of scrimage instead or 5 yards on the wrong side of it. Ferguson was a load who held his ground and occupied blockers.

Considering we got Ferg with such a low draft pick, he was one of the better bargains we ever had.

The Jets lead the NFL in scoring defense the last 8 games of the season, so I'm not too worried about the run defense. I'm guessing the switch to 3-4 is the main culprit as we don't have the perfect personel to run a 3-4. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

The last 6 games of the season the Jets played the 28th, 22nd, 23rd, 26th, 29th and 32nd ranked scoring offenses in the league. Their inability to stop the run is certainly a concern moving forward.

Hmm, if they'd all put up 30 on the Jets would they still be ranked so low? :breakdance:

because of the scheme. That's the primary reason. Players like Vilma and Robertson are a lot less effective in a 3-4.
