Arguably? Can you really make any argument that Mosley is a top 5 LB right now? Or ever, for that matter?
Right now? Too many unknowns but definitely within the realm of possibility based on.... ...Ever? There are less than 5 ILB voted all pro every year. The last 3 he was active he was one of those 3-5.... I don’t think it’s a hard argument to make. But I get it. SOJF
I think Mosley is arguably a top 5 ILB right now. It's debatable though. Other guys in/near the top 5 would be: Warner Kendricks Wagner Edmunds Jones Vander Esch (if healthy) These are all guys who play the same role Mosley will in our defense. Whether Mosley is top 5 or not I think he's close enough where it makes sense to keep him.
2 yrs is a long time without NFL-type contact. Even catching up with the speed of the game, I think the whole thing will could down to be is how much does he love playing football. He has probably been able to explore a lot of different opportunities the last two yrs with his status and income. If he still has that fire in his Belly, he could be the key to our turnaround. I do not think we will see much from him in performance in the first 1/3rd of the season
Just gonna lay this out there: Top LB’s in the league right now. -Fred Warner -Bobby Wagner -LaVonte David -Devin White -Demario Davis -Darius Leonard -Myles Jack
Too bad we didn't hold on to Davis. We drafted him and have had him twice. He'd be very helpful right now. That's a product of changing HCs and schemes as often as they change their underwear, however. Hopefully, that crap will stop now. I think we have leadership now that should be in place for at least a decade if not longer and our schemes can remain consistent, and we can just keep growing and getting better and better, and becoming more and more stable.
When the highest paid player on your team is your slot WR, you have plenty of $ to pay a dominant mike LBer.
@ouchy - I'll never agree that Mosely had any value in the second round range you were estimating but he looks great. @KingRoach - you too ya friggain slum Lord. Credit where credit is due. I was quite wrong about Mosely so far.
Mosley has been all over the place his entire career. I don’t know why this was even in question tbh, other than JD didn’t sign him, which doesn’t matter to me in the least. We need to keep good players, not move them.
I think Bell was only a 1 year gap. Unless you want to consider playing for Gase part of the gap, which is fair.
It was one season, can’t really count the off-season as absence when no one is playing. Regardless, different player, different position and circumstances. Not something I’d use as a decision basis on Mosley. I expected Mosley would have some rust, but would be the best player on our D. He will get better as year goes on if he stays healthy imo.
You have to take it into account if you want to be objective. You completely rule it out if objectivity doesn't matter to you.
Of course you take injury and absence into account. That doesn’t mean move your best player on a D devoid of good players. you stated above that Mosley was never even a top 5 ILB, so there was a lot of revisionist history going on in this thread as well. That’s not objectivity.
Few players go with massive gaps between playing (longer than the standard) and come back and perform. Look at the history of long holdouts too if you want a comparison (Vincent Jackson comes to mind).
Yes, I got that wrong, I'm able to admit when I'm wrong because my football opinion isn't firmly attached to my penis like so many internet football fans. By the way, keep patting yourself on the back at the end of the year if he's still playing well and consistently, but I have a feeling that 2 year gap definitely will mean something on the long-term stamina department and his first season back is 17 games long.
Let’s keep this about objectivity. Mosley is only 29, and took an entire year off while healthy, not injured. Those are unique circumstances. Stamina could be a factor in a long season, you are correct. But his body is also as rested and healthy as it’s probably ever been in his career. Who knows for sure. I’d rather take my chances than trade him for a late round pick tho. This is an elite player.
Mosley is clearly an impact player, and to be honest I kind of thought he would be pretty good. The original post is more about these factors: -He is (almost definitely) not worth the $17.5 million he is guaranteed in 2022 -The Jets will probably not be Super Bowl competitive until 2023 assuming things go right, 2022 if they go amazingly right -At that point Mosley will be 31 -Even if he is good for half the year, if he gets hurt he'll be a 30 year old LB recovering from a major injury, getting paid $17.5 million To me, any way you spin it, he's worth more to the current Jets as a decent draft pick than a super expensive Linebacker who might be passing his prime just as the team is about to hit its initial Super Bowl window. If the Jets traded him to a desperate team before the trade deadline, they could use that cap space on the Offensive Line and the draft pick on a Linebacker who will be in his prime at the same time as the rest of the young core players.
