Looks like Alex Lewis might have made the decision to retire. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id...ed-new-york-jets-ol-alex-lewis-decides-retire
Looks like 1.67 million since that was the dead money charge with him on the NFI/illness list according to OTC.
So with Clarke‘s long term health an issue and Lewis pretty much out of the picture it appears guard may be a high priority again in the 2022 draft....
IMO it should be all since the season hasn't started, but how knows? The NFL has some screwy rules regarding cap hits.
Yeah so we drafted a first round guard and left a pile of dogshit at the other spot with no depth unfortunately.
Well those two were part of the depth unfortunately the Jets have found out sooner than later it was bad depth .... But JD knows this ...
it was always a priority. at least with 1 of our top 5 picks (rounds 1-3) GVR isn't a starting RG and is pretty bad. lewis wasn't much better. feeny is a backup as well. We needed a new RG regardless but the other 4 positions are looking good for now with moses, becton, AVT, and mcgovern. But in 2022 moses is a FA, fant may be released, and GVR needed to be replaced so the o-line needed work anyway. O-line, TE, and back 7 are probably the priorty for 2022 draft. Maybe a WR if we let cole and crowder walk which is certainly possible.
The moment we selected Zach we should have decided to draft at least 3 OL. Using 3 picks on AVT was desperate.
that's just insane. even if all 3 pan out, you can't retain them. also the chances of getting a player as good as AVT as a later pick is extremely slim.We are set at 4 positions on the o-line. that's really strong. you can't have 5 all pro o-lineman. it isn't feasible. JD used an 11th and 14th overall pick on 2 lineman in the past 2 years. he signed moses, one of the top RTs the past few years. he signed mcgovern last year who is a top 10 center in the NFL. in 2 years he set us at 5 positions. You need to stagger draft picks due to the cap. We can draft a RG next year
I doubt WR will be a high priority but you are right about the other positions mentioned. Especially the right side of OL.
Lewis was the depth. Clarke was suppose to be the young kid who can be groomed. injuries and a retirement happened. Now Feeney is likely making the team with no push from the aforementioned. AVT and GVR the starters. I’m sure the Jets will bring in another guard unless they like who’s in camp.
Probably should have taken that 6th round flier on Trey Smith from Tennessee like Kansas City did. He’s currently starting at RG for them and doing very well.
Yeah I liked the read ups on him leading into the draft would have been a sneaky good depth pick later on ..... looks like he may be even more useful than that.
I respectfully disagree. They wanted to ensure that Zach's blindside was protected. I think JD knew about Jenkins' back issues, so the only real answer was to move up and get AVT. You have to remember that when you draft a player, you want him to develop and succeed, and if he does, that you have to pay him in 4 years. With as many draft picks as the Jets had last season and this coming offseason, they will have a lot of players to re-sign. Trading up actually will help with retention of the players we really like and want to keep. I would be shocked if the plan this past draft was to draft 3 OL. One wants to avoid having disruption or having to replace too many OL at one time. That's the mess we've been in, and imo JD is handling it wisely, drafting one, and adding vets so that there is not only a good mixture of youth and veterans, but also spreading out when their new contracts will come due. We had too many other needs/holes, and we had cheap veterans. As you know, there is a shortage of quality OL in the NFL. Chemistry is key on the OL and getting the players to play as one must be developed. GVR was decent last season, and the Jets believed he'd be better in the new blocking scheme because it better fits his skill set. Things should also be better because of McGovern, Fant and he having a season's experience playing together. I'm certain that JD will draft an OG in the 3rd/4th round range this year and maybe another in a lower round, and will look to upgrade depth and competition in FA.
Due to his guaranteed money and versatility, imo Feeney was always making the team. That was never in doubt. It's more likely he plays now, and that's not a good thing. I agree that if there is a decent camp cut, JD will sign him. He has already brought in Moore from the Panthers. I feel badly for Clark. I just hope that he can make a full recovery. If he can return to football, that's gravy, but he has a long road ahead of him.
Perhaps. With his health concerns and not being an ideal scheme fit, that may be why JD didn't roll the dice on him. But he may also have promised Saleh and Ulrich that he'd use all the lower round picks on defensive players since he used his first 3 picks on offense. As long as they all stay healthy, I think our OL will be fine this year. Perhaps not ideal or great, but they should be pretty good. IMO it's better that Lewis retired now, rather than counting on him, and then his struggling again during the season and retiring at some point during the season. At least now, JD has the opportunity to bring in a camp cut, and it will mean more snaps for Moore, McDermott, Levin and Hoge, and maybe one of them will step up and prove to be a reliable backup.
