He's supposed to be at 217 according to his own assessment. Still way "undersized" for today's TE version, but his strengh and speed could offset that weight "disadvantage". Again, I'm not saying this would be ideal,or even soething done every down/series, but it might be useful in certain situations.
It's extremely hard to repurpose players in the NFL. If Mims can't play receiver you move on. He's not long enough to be a tightend and he'll never have the strength/size/speed combo that worked for fringe tightends like Dustin Keller.
Hopefully the front office prioritizes the position in the draft next year. We made a lot of positive steps in finally getting playmakers in the building this last offseason, we simply had too many holes to realistically address them all in one year though. We need a modern, 6'5 250+ blue chip athlete at TE for next season.
Weak class on the surface which can obviously change very quickly. Charles Kolar (Iowa State) has always been my guy but I like him a lot more as a late 2nd/3rd round guy than a first round pick which is what he might be. Because he's not an exceptional athlete but he uses his body well to shield and understands how to get open. Jalen Wydermeyer is the other guy from Texas A&M, but he never jumped off the screen to me. Always seemed like upside of a quality starter than a plus starter and he probably has been more productive than he should have been because the A+M receivers have been meh the past couple years. Trey McBride is the other one from Colorado State but he's short and the new coach has fucked with the offense so much it's hard to get a read on him.
Cade Otton from Washington is another possibility. Most of the top TE's in the game today were day 2/3 picks. I'd love to have an elite one, but a competent player will do. We haven't had that since maybe Keller?
I've seen him listed on a bunch of sites but I haven't personally seen him or many of the others so I can't comment. I'd love to see Kolar run a 5.0 and drop to day 3 but I doubt it'll happen.
I think it all depends on what we expect a TE to do. Lots of College TE's now are basically just taller, bigger W/R's - if we want one to block too, they will be much harder to find
TE's are notorious for taking years to develop--not a NYJ forte. I'd rather pick up a veteran with upside via trade/FA such as we did for Ryan Griffin--it just didn't pan out with him but he was a good signing at the time IMO.
I think this is one of the better ideas. Zach obviously had chemistry with him, and from what I saw, the kid can play.
That's the truth. I remember looking at Joel Dreesen on the Jets sideline and wondering how useless he was that he couldn't get on the field. He ended up having a pretty tidy career with the Texans years later, which is more than you'd expect from a 6th rounder. Those guys are around the league and not hard to find, Ryan Griffin was that guy 2 seasons ago.
yeah TE group not looking great at all but the NFL overall is kinda short on TE talent. Herndon has been a disappointment after a great rookie year, griffin just doesn't look great and always getting hurt and kroft is a JAG. at least the 2022 draft is pretty good for TEs and we have a ton of extra picks. Hopefully we can draft a good one next year
Yeah, I forgot about his injury history but he has been pretty close to injury free the last 2 seasons. Just looked draftsharks.com injury history and they give him a 94% chance of being injured this season, and 15.3% chance of injury per game.

I believe with the new scheme we will see Herndon become the starter we expected him to be. Gase system was not really a TE friendly system and he played with some injuries. Once the dust settles from camp and pre-season, Herndon will be the starter and will be engaged in this system because he has to, TE is very important in the new scheme and he will have no choice but to be engaged, as blocker and receiver. As far as becoming a safety blanket for Wilson, so far that award goes to Davis, and it might carry through into regular season, not saying it won’t become Herndon but it’s good to know Wilson has someone he trust right now.
