RIP Coach. You gave us some good years when you were our OC and HC. Condolences to his family. Sent from my SM-G986U using Tapatalk
Great offensive coordinator. He got saddled with a bottom-5 offensive line for most of his head coaching career and he still had good-to-great offenses (even if he did run a screen or a draw play on every 3rd-and-long of his career). "Walton was an All-American at Pitt in 1955 and 1956 as a split end before playing in the NFL from 1957-64. He was a second-round pick by Washington and played for them (1957-60) and the Giants (1961-64). He had 178 catches, 2,628 yards and 28 touchdowns." <---- I can't believe I never knew this. He never looked like an NFL wide receiver to me.
My best memory for Walton was when the Jets played their finale against the Giants won knocked them out if the playoffs, finished the season 8-7-1 Joes last season as coach if the jet's
He definitely was a good OC. Richard Todd improved under his guidance for a couple of years before the bottom gave out. I think he was a good head coach but his personality wore on some players particularly veterans. He was also betrayed by bad drafting which he had a hand in but not completely. It was time for him to go when he was finally shown the door. That being said overall he was a good man. RIP.
RIP Coach Walton. He was the Jets coach when I became a fan at 9 years old in 1986. Sadly at 9 years old I was enamored with Al Toon and Ken O’Brien and did not even care who the coach was.
Great memories of that game, but he coached them again the following year before getting fired. He was the coach of the Jets when I started following them, so I will always remember him fondly. There were some great wins with him at the helm.
He was a very good OC and the Jets thought they were going to lose him to another head coaching job, he had interviewed for the head coaching job in Atlanta before getting the job with the Jets. He was saddled with some tough draft picks, remember Roger Vick, what I believe really put to much pressure on him was drafting O’Brien sitting him for a year without playing and Marino that same year playing lights out throwing TDs non stop. In his last couple of years as Jet Head Coach running up the middle on 3rd and 8 was a normal call and the fans couldn’t take it any longer.
