Christian Hackenberg. His first preseason TD leading drive had me thinking we found ourselves the next Joe Montana.
Danny Woodhead might be one of the all-time Jets preseason GOATs except we let him get away and he turned into a solid player.
Wayne Chrebet caught everything thrown his way in his 1st and 2nd camp. Definitely a summer hall of famer. He had an advantage though, playing at Hofstra his home
Yeah, I definitely remember Ratliff to Clowney. After years of Pennington, it was refreshing to see a Jet QB with a big arm. Other notable plays that stick in my mind are Bryan Thomas shooting a gap to sack a QB. Quinton Coples making a big play, can't remember exactly what he did, either batted down a QB pass or sacked a QB. I think I recall Vernon Gholston making a tackle on a kick off return. Going way back, I remember Jeff Blake totally outplaying Browning Nagle in preseason. Those are my highlights.
Wasn't Matt Robinson a summer and preseason star as well? I think so, as that enabled us to trade him to the Broncos, but I could be mistaken. Clowney, Gates, Ratliff are definitely Jets' summer TC and preseason HOFers.
Matt Robinson engineered one of the best Jet comebacks ever well at least pre-2000 when Vinny engineered 4 or 5 amazing comebacks. The Jets were down early 28 to 7 to the Broncos and Robinson led them back to a win. There is a story where at some point he was going to be the starter but then got into trouble for lying to Walt Michaels about what I believe was an a thumb injury wrestling another player? I don't recall the details but it screwed over his chance.
Speaking of preseason stars, the Jets announced they signed 37 year old QB Josh Johnson. I remember he did a fairly good job in preseason a few years ago.
I remember him being horrendous in camp/preseason. Edit: He was 6/16 with 1Td and 1 Int in that first game lol
Herm always talked up “Number 89” during the 2004 and 2005 camps. But Cotchery didn’t become a solid weapon until Mangini took over in 2006.
Same here. As I recall, in that preseason game, Bryce Petty led a very impressive drive right to the goal line at which point he got injured and had to leave the game. Hackenberg came in and threw a nice TD pass to someone in the corner of the end zone. Maybe that is what @SmashMouth is remembering because I remember thinking the same thing about Petty. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be for either of those two.
