This is good news / bad news. The good news is that we were hoping Lawson still had that speed burst around the edge. Sounds like so far he does, which means our d-line could have some real teeth. So excited for that. The bad news is this is where Becton struggled last season. His lateral movement was poor and he struggles against speed rushers. I hoped losing weight would improve that but it sounds like he needs more work. The blindside cant have that weakness.
That's what I always find funny about these training camp updates. For every guy having a great performance there's the guy he's going against giving it up. That said, it's easy to get excited about Carl Lawson's potential here with all these positive updates. And as @cval said, having Becton go up against a top pass rusher every day in practice will hopefully elevate his game
It is good news/bad news. I think Lawson is going to have a monster year. I'm gonna predict that if he stays healthy, he's either gonna have 15+ sacks or other teams will be forced to constantly double team him, and then Q, and our other DE will get home. I'm not worried about Becton. Remember that he didn't practice for minicamp, and I can't remember, but may not have practiced at all in OTAs. He hasn't worked against Lawson yet. With 6 weeks to practice against him, I feel confident that Becton will be on top of his game when the season starts, and he will be one of the top 5 LTs in the NFL.
Lawson tore his ACL and missed the bulk of two seasons. He returned and was fairly solid last season but CInn had no interest in resigning him. This made me question if he'd lost something.
