Drafting at or near the bottom of every round for the last 20 years probably left them little choice.

This idea that one can save salary cap money by devaluing the CB position using a zone corner system seems to be a trend in the NFL right now. One of the many things I like JD is he seems to be on the cutting edge of trends rather than being stuck in the past.

While Mac looked for value he did not prioritize the right positions and spent the big money on non premium positions. JD seems very conscious of only investing big money and high draft picks in premium positions.

I finally feel like the Jets FO is operating ahead of the curve than our normal 20 years behind the curve approach.

That certainly didn't help, but neither did all the picks that Belicheat wasted missing badly on players.

I should have been more clear:
While going to the Super Bowl 11 times in the last 20 years, the Pats didn’t spend money on FAs.

The Pats are all in now. Belichick doesn't care about the future. He wants wins now so he can pass Shula. He needs 50 wins which may never happen for him.

Meh, that’s not how you win football games though.

Let me clarify. Of course, you’d like to re-sign players to show loyalty. But you have to do it smartly. I mean, what in the hell did Namath and Klecko do after leaving the Jets? They were both awful.

Also if Wilson, Becton, Moore, AVT and Mims are all great it’ll be mathematically impossible to sign them all anyway!

Yes, it has to be done smartly, but it's awful imo that players like Namath and Klecko left and finished their careers with other teams. It's a business, and if players insist on continuing to play when they are done, then I guess there's nothing one can do but let them walk and wish them well. Those are two of the greatest players in team history, and both should have retired as Jets, not soiled their legacy by going to another team and playing like crap. If they need/want the money, perhaps the team could talk them into retiring and then hiring them for public relations or as an asst. coach or something.

Nice link. The Pats have two things going for them this year. All the money they spent on FAs and the return if all their players that opted out last year which was significant. But, every team in the division has gotten better. Would be nice if the Jets had 1 or 2 divisional NFC east like opponents that were easy 2 win opponents. The Giants always seem so much luckier than us being in such a terrible division.

The Chiefs have managed to pay Mahomes, Kelce, Hill, and Clark. The Cowboys paid Elliot, Prescott, Cooper, and Lawrence. It can be done.

Also, let’s see how they manage the team after signing all those guys. Cowboys aren’t doing a good job of it.

Mahomes cap number is $7mm this year. Let’s talk again when the $40m/yr part kicks in.
