Still only 31 years of age came out of 2012's draft class alongside of guys like Russell Wilson, Stephon Gilmore and Lavonte David. One of our weakest positions is RG and Van Roten is absolutely awful. • #23rd overall draft pick (2012). • 1x Second-team All-Pro (2016). • 2x First-team All-Pro (2015/2017). • 6x Pro Bowler (2015-2020). • 125 games played (124 career starts). Outside of his rookie season (2012) he's since started 121 out of a possible 128 games (121/128) throughout his previous 8 seasons of play (2013-2020) (94.5% availability rate). According to Pro Football Focus 2020 was a career Castro down year nonetheless he'd still create for an A+ O-lineman upgrade over Van Roten @ RG. 2013: 81.5. 2014: 79.2. 2015: 84.2. 2016: 83.0. 2017: 90.0. 2018: 74.8. 2019: 71.1. 2020: 64.1. • David DeCastro (RG) is currently 31. • We signed Jumbo Elliott (LT) @ 31. • We signed Damien Woody (RT) @ 31. • We signed Alan Faneca (LG) @ age 32. I'd go nuts if Joe Douglas signs both of DeCastro (RG) and Moses (RT) because I'd go from absolutely hating the thoughts of Zach Wilson behind the right side of our O-Line to immediately dreaming big.
And the NFL rumors have already started. '3 NFL teams that should jump to pick up David DeCastro' "1.) New York Jets – Under the watchful eye of general manager Joe Douglas, the Jets have made a concerted investment in the offensive line. The draft is the best evidence of this as they’ve used first-round picks in the last two classes on Mekhi Becton and Alijah Vera-Tucker. The O-line as a whole, however, remains somewhat incomplete" "As of right now, Greg Van Roten is slated to start at the guard spot opposite of Vera-Tucker. While Van Roten is an upgrade from what the Jets have had there previously, DeCastro would be a big upgrade from him if healthy. With a young quarterback in Zach Wilson taking over, the Jets would be wise to protect that investment under center". https://www.google.com/amp/s/nflspi...stro-landing-spots-jets-raiders-dolphins/amp/ (They also ranked Raiders #2 and Miami #3).
I read he is contemplating retirement due to foot injury. He'ld be a good pickup if he was healthy, but I think he would be too expensive. Maybe a one year deal, but Next years draft will fill the hole at RG. I'm all in on Moses, I feel he has 3 good years left in him, but I want to try to stay young. Adding deCastro & Moses is adding too much age to the line for me.
I remember being at MetLife on draft night, and hoping the Jets would draft him. I think they drafted Coples instead.
We need him, even if he’s a wash w/ van rotten, he’s worth it. Probably a better leader and knows what a REAL organization looks like. He can help in that regard. And I’m actually ok with him and Moses being older, I don’t want a bunch of young 20’s on the line..growing pains + it’ll get REAL expensive later!
They had no cap room and a bunch of rookies to sign. If he was gonna retire they wouldn't have had to cut him
Remember Khalil the Center? Decastro was a stud…. But his time is more than likely over. Let someone else take the risk Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If he's healthy he might be worth a 1 year deal to shore up the right side of the line. He'd be a massive improvement over our current options at RG. The ankle injury seems serious though, he's saying he'll need another surgery on it to even have a chance to play.
The Jets don’t need to add a guard whose best years are behind him, who is currently dealing with an injury AND who is at least considering retirement. No thank you. He is hurt and has been dealing with the injury for quite some time according to Ian Rapoport. Morgan Moses is still my top priority if I am JD.
Well I wouldn't say they've got no cap room they're currently ranked 10th in available salary cap space @ $15,336,617 (in comparison to the Jets, 2nd @ $31,620,056). And come next offseason of 2022 Pittsburgh is fully loaded in available salary cap space projected #2 @ $75,241,547 (in comparison to Jets, 3rd @ $71,650,848).
Well the Jets most certainly and especially don't need a RG in Van Roten who's currently absolutely horrific. Even a retired/crippled DeCastro is much better than Van Roten @ RG. If he's available and if I'm Joe Douglas I'm without hesitation taking an RG JD flyer on him.
Weeks 5-17 VanRoten has better PFF numbers than DeCastro. Less hits, hurries, pressures, better grades. “If I’m Joe Douglas” - thank god you’re not.
His ankles are shot, we'd be risking another Kalil situation. He was a great player and I was gutted we picked that bum Coples over this guy but we should avoid a retread.
So his pff rating (which is always the last word, of course..) dropped off a cliff and he got cut by a good football team.
VanRoten stepped up: Hurries weeks 1-4 = 13 Hurries weeks 5-17 = 6 or 2 per 3 games Quenton Nelson 5-17+ = 8 just under 2 per 3 g Pressures weeks 1-4 = 15 Pressures weeks 5-17 = 9 or 1 per game Quenton Nelson 5-17+ = 14 just over 1 per game Games with 100% efficiency rating 1-4 = 0 out of 4 Games with 100% efficiency rating 5-17 = 5 outa 9 Quenton Nelson 100% weeks 5-17+ = 5 out of 13 For those who think our OL is in dire shape, these aren’t the Same old Jets, so stop being Same old Jets fans.
As of right now, that’s my take on this situation. I think signing someone like DeCastro is for a desperate team and I don’t want my team to be desperate like that anymore. He is clearly injured/declining. Pass on the name. I’d rather roll with the unknown entity in Clark than play an aging/injured player that a historically great franchise said, “no thanks”.
Confirms reports. https://www.nfl.com/news/ex-steeler...veals-need-for-another-ankle-surgery-has-no-p
He needs ankle surgery….contemplating retirement Steelers are not stupid…they cut him because they don’t think he’ll be able to play
