Figured this deserved its own thread because it’s a pretty big deal. Multi-year contract is big too, that means we are most definitely moving on from Fant and making Moses the guy.
Is Moses coming in to play RT or move to RG? Everything I have read is that Fant cannot play guard but Moses can. I believe over 4 million of Fant's salary is guaranteed. He would make quite a lot for a backup.
If Fant can't play RG, he can certainly be a RT and let Moses be the RG. Fant has a big contract? Building up the weakest link on the OL is paramount. If they can do this, Zach's rookie year will be a lot more successful overall.
Talk about addressing the OL! Wow! I can't believe this guy is even a free agent - apparently one of the best OTs last year at least
I wouldn't have a problem overpaying Fant to be the swing tackle. They could cut both Edoga and McDermott and keep whichever one they wanted to on the PS. That would go a long way towards ensuring the team and Zach in case of injury to Becton, and would save one roster spot for a young player with talent and potential. They could also get Moses to play RG perhaps.
This is way premature, but if JD signs Moses and the Jets win 9 games this year, does JD win executive of the year? IMO he would deserve it with the amazing amount of talent he added between FA and the draft in one offseason. I never in my wildest, most optimistic dreams, could have envisioned him adding this much talent in one offseason. He added: in FA (11) with 7 possible starters this season Carl Lawson Sheldon Rankins Buddy Curry Lamarcus Joyner Jarrad Davis Justin Hardee Corey Davis Keelan Cole Tevin Coleman Tyler Kroft Dan Feeney in the Draft (10) with 5 possible starters this season Zach Wilson Alijah Vera-Tucker Elijah Moore Michael Carter Jamien Sherwood Michael Carter II Jason Pinnock Hamsah Nasirildeen Brandin Echols Jonathan Marshall UDFAs (Dunn, Naggar, Yeboah, & Eifler have a shot to make the team, Rashed & Dwumfour will probably be on the PS Isaiah Dunn Michael Dwumfour Camilo Eifler Kenny Yeboah Tristen Hoge Chris Naggar Hamilcar Rashed, Jr. Parker Ferguson Grant Hermanns Teton Saltes Brendon White Jordyn Peters I think there's a good chance that all 10 draft picks make the roster, all the FAs (11) should stick, and even if only Dunn sticks on the roster, that's 22 new players added to the roster (almost half) and maybe 12 new starters. If Naggar wins the kicking job, that's 23 new players and 13 starters For all intents and purposes one could add JT Hassell to the list as he was signed Dec. 12, which was practically the offseason, and he could stick as depth. I think 3-5 of the UDFAs will make the PS.
This would certainly go a long way to helping our rookie QB. We are hopefully going places my friends
This signing would help our run game too. We have to have a run game to give Zach any chance of developing this year.
If this does happen, it will remind me a lot of when we signed Pete Kendall later in the offseason. Ended up being a really sweet pickup and helped the team. If we do pull this off, you have to give JD major props for building depth. Becton, Tucker, McGovern, VanRoten, Moses and then you have an assortment of depth with position flexibility (Fant, McDermott, Lewis, Feeney, Edoga, Clark) This is just off the top of my head and I'm probably missing a guy or two, We would be the deepest we've been in a decade easy on the line.
When Fant was in Seattle, they'd play him a decent amount of time in the tackle-eligible role and went with 6 on the line. Not sure how many snaps but it was at least a few per game. Don't know if LaFleur likes to use this set but it would be available with a Moses signing.
There are too many injuries on the Oline every year not to be deep--you need to be 7 deep and have position flex
and Good to see you post, it's been a while! Good memory on Kendall! I wonder if they'd ask Moses to play RG and let Fant stay at RT. If not, I think Fant becomes the swing tackle and Edoga and McDermott are cut. I think roster spots will be at a premium, so I don't see them keeping 11 OL. I think they keep 10 at most, and more likely only 8 or 9. Feeney can play C or OG. He's not very good, but I wonder if due to his flexibility they keep him rather than Jimmy Murray (whom ESPN lists as the backup C)? Supposedly Clark can play RT or OG. I think Tristen Hoge will have to have an amazing camp to make the team, but he can play C or OG as well. If Van Roten wins the starting RG spot, I wonder if they keep Lewis for depth, or go with Hoge or Feeney for versatility?
I am going to lose my mind if we sign this dude. The running game is going to be on point this season!
I think with the guaranteed money Feeney got to sign it is unlikely he will not earn a spot as backup center and guard. What I see from a lot of these signings is flexibility. Moses could play RT, Becton insurance at LT or guard. I would guess this signing would mean goodbye Edoga as well as one of Lewis Clarke or Van Rotten.
my best guess is moses starts at RT for us. I don't think he'd want to play for a team that doesn't start him at RT if he has options. SO it makes me believe we promised him the RT spot. fant will either play RG or be the back-up swing tackle / becton insurance of his weight or injuries become an issue.
