https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...chedule-perhaps-as-early-as-2025-per-reports/ per cbssportsline and NBC Sports, the NFL is already headed for an 18 game schedule in the "imminent future." The NFL is about to host its biggest season ever, expanding to a 17-game schedule this year. But don't count out yet another expansion in the coming years. According to NBC Sports, the league is aiming for a move to 18 games -- as soon as the 2025 season -- if not earlier. The NFL's current collective bargaining agreement, which runs through 2030, outlines only a move from 16 to 17 regular-season games, but Peter King reports "most observers ... think 18 games is definitely on the way, sooner rather than later" with ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio saying it's "just a matter of time" until an additional week is up for a vote by the owners. So NFL fans better get ready for an 18 game regular season, which means that including the playoffs, some teams will now be playing 21-22 football games over the course of 6-7 months." ***Brook! I posted this in the Jets forum just to get a discussion going, but please feel free to move after a few weeks or whatever to the NFL forum, like you have done with similar threads that deal with NFL topics (schedule, salary cap, etc.) which affect the Jets and the entire league.
Thanks @patleahy for posting. My only concern with the 17/18 game shift is cutting pre-season games to make room. Normally, no biggie. But for teams (like ours) with 50 new, young players, the pre-season games is where new careers are born. But now we'll be giving an UDFA one series to 'show their best stuff' versus having the entire 4th PS game. Covid killed the preseason last year, and it really showed in our un-prepared team, especially our new oline at the time. The very first snap they played together was in the first live game. It could be even worse this year with our young team and young QB learning a whole new offense and defense with fewer PS games to figure it all out. Compare this to a team like the Chefs or Tampa who are coming back with the same players running the same shit for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th season in a row. We NEED a FULL preseason dammit!!!! I look forward to more real games, but I feel for the young men who will get drafted only to be cut w/o a real chance to show what they can do.
I like watching the Jets on Sunday. If this is more Jets games it’s more enjoyable. It’s not like the Jets have been doing anything to give me a few more games in January.
Maybe. To me it just makes it that much more likely that teams go into the playoffs with two or three more critical injuries and the quality of playoff football suffers.
not really. NFL could use a longer season. right now the season runs 17 weeks, then 5 weeks for playoffs (wild card, division, conference, bye week(pro bowl), Superbowl) for a total of 22 weeks. less then half the year. this season it'll increase to 23 weeks. with 18 games add an extra bye it goes up to 25 weeks or almost half the year.
offseason is way too long IMO. unless they want to do a minor leagues during the offseason it makes sense to expand the season
they'll get an extra bye week, they could even make them static. 20 weeks (18 games with 2 byes) means play 6 then bye, play 6 then bye play 6. nobody plays more then 6 weeks in a row where some teams have to play 12 in a row as it stands now
