It’s got to be between 1995, 1996, and 2020. 1995: 30th Offense /26th Defense 1996: 27th Offense/29th Defense 2020: 30th Offense/26th Defense It turned out the 95 and 96 Jets had some good players on the roster, but we obviously didn’t know that at the time. Hopefully that’s the same case when we look back upon the 2020 Jets. Unfortunately I’d say 2020 was probably the worst Jets team ever. So many non-competitive games (particularly on offense). The Colts game when they were running out Chris Hogan, Braxton Berrios, and Lawrence Cager at WR stands out.
If you're asking this question, you obviously haven't been following this team very long. Don't ever ask was this the worst team, because they'll prove you wrong every time
No. They are the third worst from just the three teams you have listed. And there are other better (worse) contenders.
Yes they were the worst team. The Kotite1-15 team was at least competitive and had leads or were tied at the half in 9 games. The 2020 team was getting blown out consistently in the 1st quarter. Plus with Gase as HC it was the hardest team to watch. Gase is by far not only the worst HC in team history but the least likeable. 2020 was all about getting rid of Gase and the only season I can recall where almost the entire fan base rooted against the team each week.
Recency bias will say yes, but in all likelihood they are not. Without question one of the worst teams in franchise history though. Bottom 3.
The thing to say is, was this the worst team we have ever had, or were they just so badly coached with absolute rubbish plays that they literally could do nothing to else but be that bad? Gase, was meant to be all about the dink and dunk, quick passing plays yet we were one of the worst teams to make use of the RB's in the passing game, it is so bizarre that the one aspect of the game that would help his system he choose to ignore because he did not want Bell to even stand a chance of looking good. (the chances are in hindsight he was never going to be the back we hoped for) God, I hate Gase with everything I have to give. On the bright side, the level to beat is set so low that Saleh can not fail to be better
The thing about the 1996 team and the 2020 team, is they both had terrible coaching. I mean horrendous. Parcells turned around the team instantly. Fans would be elated if Saleh could do something similar.
The 2020 team was definitely among the worst. The 1995 team was worse than 1996 - as somebody above pointed out the 1996 team had better players and also blew a lot of late leads. I don’t recall the 1995 team blowing many leads other than the home opener against the Colts. They were bad and quite simply boring - hardly any talent. The 2020 team is in the same realm but while winning only 2 games there were several games that should have been wins ( NE and the Raiders come to mind and possibly the Denver game ). The road game against the Chargers was competitive and could have been won in the final seconds. Basically the 2020 team win could have easily won 5 games but actually won 2. The 1995 team was worth about 4 wins but actually won 3 ( one against expansion Jax and one against a Marino less Dolphins ). Therefore the true answer is in the eye of the beholder. But I will say the 1996 team while only winning 1 game lost about 5 or 6 games in ridiculous fashion ( blowing huge leads or committing ridiculous penalties in close games ). So are they the worst team because they won only 1 game or not because the coaching was so bad? I’ll say 1995 and 2020 is a toss up. The 1996 team was better believe it or not.
the Kotite teams would have kicked the crap out of the '20 Jets. The problem with the Kotite teams were special teams. Offense and defense kept us in games, it was our special teams, which meant much more then, that killed us every week. last years team literally looked like they just met up in the parking lot and chose positions for the first 8 games. with not much improvement in later weeks.
1975-76 would come to mind for the old timers. 1989 was rotten - the Michaels/Walton nucleus disintegrated before our eyes.....
The '96 Jets averaged 17.4 points per game on offense and surrendered 28.4 on defense. They got blown out in six games. I think it was a bit more than special teams.
Some recency bias at work here but the 2020 team was definitely one of the worst. I think it probably had the worst/most unwatchable offense at the very least. We averaged 15 points per game last season. That is absolutely abysmal. It was like watching a shitty high school team who can't do anything except run for 2-3 yards.
I meant to say the '96 Jets in my previous post. I'm not going to sit here and tell you I remember those seasons well. I was 28 years old with two infant children. I did watch every game and I had season tickets. Those teams sucked. I'm not going to argue which team was the worst in our history because I just don't give a shit, lol. We've had a lot of bad teams.
All things being equal, it comes down to 2 plays for me to determine if the '95 team was worse than '20 team. (a) Bubby Brister shovel pass interception for TD to lead Carolina to it's first ever win (b) Cover 0 defense which lead to last second loss For sheer buffoonery it's gotta be '95...
