Skill is learned; talent is god given, If I’m confident in my CS, I’m going to take the best talent every time all else being equal.

The thing is, Darnold was (7-6) with Gase in 2019. So going from that, to (2-10) in 2020 is a huge drop. He lost Robby Anderson and Jamal Adams, so maybe that was it, but he looked like a much worse QB. It is hard to explain. You could argue he had better o-line protection after they gelled, but it just did not work out. Maybe his shoulder injury was worse than he said it was. Hard to know.

That was the easiest schedule in NFL history, we also should have ended 10-6 but lost to two winless teams that season lol I feel for Darnold I really do and if this was him just coming out of the draft now to this situation I am sure he would have made a top 15 QB, now we will never know and he goes to a stacked Panthers with a point to prove and at worst he has pocketed another 20m+ for his retirement fund.

So on that score it really is hard to be too sorry for him after all lol

Wilson supporters tell me strength of schedule don’t mean anything.

I agree with that at every position except for QB. We have seen many talented athletes flop at the QB position. I care about their skill, football knowledge and leadership more than talent. The thing about Fields is I think he has all of that stuff too. I trust that Joe Douglas and company have done enough to evaluate them in all facets, and if the decision is Wilson, then I get it. If it is Fields, I would also get it. I think it is a Win-win decision that goes down to the Jets' preference.

Gotta say I find all this talk of talent and ceilings hilarious when Wilson is a more talented passer than Fields. Fields is a better athlete and runner for sure but let's not ignore arm talent.

    Well said. I agree.

I watched the video, and then read your comment, and what came up for me is that while I can see the athletic talent in Fields, and I agree that IF he increases his skill he will be a great QB, the difference for me is that I don't think the Jets can gamble on that at this point. You know if they had a period of great QB play, and were now looking for the guy to groom behind their vet - think Packers drafting Rodgers to replace Favre - I'd say that gamble was worth it. But this pick this time HAS to deliver a QB who will at a minimum be above average. Wilson will almost certainly clear that bar assuming that Douglas is going to make sure to avoid what happened with Darnold and will be giving him good talent and coaching.

    In time
Fields will also clear that bar, and maybe because of his athleticism he can buy that time with his running ability. OTOH, if that running ability is successful for him it may cause him to rely more on that than in developing the things he needs to develop in his passing game. Will Fields put in the massive amount of time and effort that Allen did to improve his shortcomings? Even for guys who are known for being hard workers and driven (and I believe Fields has shown he is despite some unfounded media claims otherwise), what Allen did is almost unheard of - performing 10K plus reps to change his mechanics. Now I don't think Fields needs anywhere near that kind of "fixing", so maybe he can achieve it, but assuming he does, it will still take some time to do it. Are Jets fans who are exhausted of patience willing to wait for him to do this? IDK.

So for me, Wilson is the more "plug in ready" of the two, and therefore the safer bet. I hope I'm right.

There are certain skill thresholds (i.e., accuracy, anticipation, arm strength, footwork...etc) they need to meet of course. Fields surpasses all those thresholds so then it comes down to the better talent to me.

  10. Funny cause I never mentioned Josh Allen or any QB for that matter nor did i mention 40 times. So i really dont understand the point of your post or why others are liking it other than simply not liking my position on Zachary

The one thing that trumps all the talent in the world is the mental aspect of the game. I'm not saying Fields doesn't have it but for me it's the one thing that is the hardest to teach. Maybe the evaluators see that as a problem with him. It would certainly scare me away. Again, not saying that's the issue but it's something worth mentioning.

I agree that the mental aspect trumps everything else - assuming that the physical and skill levels meet a certain threshold - i.e. way above average. Personally I don't see deficit in Fields on this measure, but OTOH I do rate Wilson higher in this category.

  13. Thats not how i see it. Wilson is the refined guy who goes through progressions, climbs the pocket & gets rid of the ball quickly. Im not enamored w his physical talent. Its solid but extremely overstated.

Fields is the instinctual athletic type who can use his legs & arm to beat you but needs refinement. But hes been an elite level athlete w movement/throwing skills dating back to HS. And im not entirely sold by him either but strongly prefer to Wilson

This is exactly how I see it, except for your preference, so I still don't see how you can be so against Wilson at #2. :D

    That's fair for sure.

Yeah, that is definitely how I look at it too. However, if Mike LaFleur pounded the table for Fields, I would not disagree. I hope he is doing that for Wilson, and not just Douglas.

No one brought up 40 times with Allen or Mahomes now we like Fields because of his 40 time. SMH

We’ll know soon enough in a couple of years if they were right.

  17. Wilson doesnt have the upside that Fields does. I want the playmaker. Not just someone good enough to start early.

I also dont get excited about the kind of Game that suits ZW in East Rutherford after Halloween. Im tired of trying to force a quick controlled passing attack when we are an outdoor northeast team.Gase wouldve loved Wilson.Keep that in perspective.

I specifically want an explosive dynamic QB w an elite strong arm & plus athleticism or in Fields case vice versa. I want big plays.Chunk plays.Excitement.An aggressive downfield mind set. Not finesse 3 & 5 step drop timing routes & checkdowns.

You are describing exactly what Zach Wilson is. He is the anti checkdown option. He always try to find an option down the field.

I disagree on Fields there but I respect your opinion.

Fields doesn't wow me physically. He does most things 'good' but nothing I would say 'great.' Wilson has alot of things that concern me absolutley, but his arm and his ability to improvise outside the pocket, could, be the 'great' thing Fields doesn't have

I think that about Lance though, physically he's my favorite if you just want ot look at that. But drafting a DII kid 2nd overall is too damned risky for me.

I want Pitts the TE most of all but it aint gonna happen :(
