Where were these Darnold takes in 2018?

I didn't like Darnold in 2018. I liked Rosen and Mayfield. I liked Allen's big arm, but did not like his poor accuracy, and I'm surprised/impressed that he was able to improve it after turning pro - a very rare feat. Part of that was my not taking into account where he played, and the type of offense they ran and the talent around him.

As for Darnold, I criticized his funky windup, and his inaccuracy. After we drafted him I tried to like him, and I did come to like his strong arm and ability to make off schedule plays, and I still want to see him succeed, but his footwork still sucks, as well as his decision-making.

Again, I see no real similarities between Sam and Zach.

The hype over the off platform throwing ability, processing & release speed. Wilson at least has better feet which in turn allows him to be more accurate.

I never thought Darnold had quick release speed. In fact, I thought his elongated throwing motion worked against that.

I already responded to that without you asking earlier, but now explicitly asked, so let me reiterate. The biggest problem Darnold has right now is poor accuracy and TOs. He is extremely TO prone and is rated last in NFL in passes out of clean pocket. These were biggest issues in College, where he was bottom 5 in his class in TO worthy plays and wasn't in top 20 in clean pocket accuracy. Zach is at the top of the class in fewest TO worthy passes and the best in recent history in clean pocket accuracy. There are other differences as well, and some similarities, but if you take the guy's biggest weaknesses and make them great strengths, you are not looking at a similar guy.

For sure. I don't think he will, but there are very few prospects I feel absolutely certain about. Not everyone is Andrew Luck.

As far as Wilson being similar to Darnold, there are a few key differences. The main one is that Wilson is a lot more careful with the ball than Darnold ever was. As we all know Darnold had turnover problems even in college, and the PAC-12 isn't exactly known for defense. Wilson doesn't make bad decisions nearly as often as Darnold did, that alone will raise his floor by quite a bit.

I also think Wilson is more accurate than Darnold was, and he looked his best by far in his last college season. Contrast that with Darnold who clearly regressed during his last year before the draft. Not that this matters much but I think Wilson is quicker than Darnold and twitchier overall. He can generate good velocity with a more compact motion than Darnold and he's quicker to escape pressure on his feet.

There are definite concerns with Wilson. He still needs to add 5-10 more lbs of good weight. He's somewhat injury prone. He's only had one very good season against questionable competition.

I still think his positives, upside and floor supersede all of those concerns.

I don’t think they are the same guy but the disproportionate hype feels the same. I didn’t get the Darnold love in 2018 & I don’t get the fawning over Wilson now. Well if I’m honest, I get it but just don’t have it if that makes any sense. I will say he is more worthy of hype than Darnold was; that’s good I guess.

The hype around Wilson almost feels manufactured.

Don't get me wrong, the kid makes incredible throws and just seems to make shit work, but something doesn't feel quite right to me.

Fields was QB2 for 3 years, now all of a sudden he had two "bad" games and he's ranked lower than MAC JONES by some people. It's asinine.

I think Fields is the guy, can thriw the same or better than wilson and has faced real opposition and prevailed. What more do you need? it's that easy for me.

I feel towards the Wilson hype men like how I’m guessing everyone else felt towards me in 2017 & Mahomes, I don’t get it.

There was a lot of hype over Payton Manning too, more recently over Murray and Burrow. There was also hope over Sam, and others who didn't pan out. You can't help whom the media hypes up. They could be wrong or right, it's almost random. To me, I don't have a dog in this, aside from wanting the Jets to finally have a real FQB after 50 years. When I look at Wilson (and Fields too really, but like Wilson more), I see someone who can make every throw, someone who is willing to work hard, true student of the game, and has shown big improvement, takes care of the ball, and has a rare combination of arm talent, mobility, athleticism, size, and accuracy. The fact he just completed the best statistical passing season in NCAA history according to PFF advanced stats metrics also doesn't hurt. I am concerned about labrum tear he repaired two years ago, but looking at the way he throws now it appears to be behind him. I think he will be the guy to solidify QB position for the Jets for the 1st time in 50 years.

But I understood the hype with Manning; I was part of it his junior year. Understand the difference? I can’t speak to Murray & Burrow as I don’t pay attention to that stuff when the Jets are not projected to draft a QB.

Is it that hard to understand the Wilson hype? Statistically he was amazing, his tape was amazing and his commitment to improve is surreal. You think he went from BYU 2019 version to the 2020 version overnight? He worked his tail off on his game last summer and improved every single facet of his game. It sucks for covid as I think he would have proven he was legit against top team too but it is what it is.

I also think part of what make the Wilson hype it's his upside. People get very excited about his throwing abilities and his quick processing. Every single negative thing I found against him are related to last year or his injuries. Some people bring Coastal Carolina but it's clear he did everything necessary to win that game and they almost did.

I mean Fields has been in the national spotlight for 2 years and Lawrence for 3 years of course they get more hype from fans and it is always surprising to find a player in the mix with them that was not on the radar a year ago.

Only QB I’d be upset with is Mac Jones and I seriously doubt we go that direction.

Of course we all have our favorites but I’ll be pretty excited with Fields or Wilson and even Lance would be OK with me.

They all have the opportunity to be great with the right coaching....we should all support whoever it turns it out to be, even if it’s not your first choice

Some would say the difference is Wilson carried BYU with sub par players. He elevated everyone with his play.

Fields had his moments but he had a beast RB and some great talent around him. Its a tough call but leaving it to only competition isn't good enough.

Sam Darnold had strong competition at USC
Josh Allen had weak competition at Wyoming

The talent gap between BYU and their opponents this past year in the aggregate was greater than the gap between OSU & their opponents.

Just realized I was sitting on a Watson pick. That has now been changed to "Other" because "Two of the Above" is not a selection offered. I said it back before the season ended and I'm sticking with it unless Mahomes demands a trade and keeps his pants on.
