If that’s who he shares similarities with as a player, then yes. There are no lines to be drawn between Wilson and Manziel, there just aren’t. But he does have the arm talent and moxie of a Mahomes and Rodgers. He may not be as successful as those two in the NFL, but that’s the comparison right now because of his ability.

How can you not feel good about a guy who shows that kind of craftiness and intelligence, and has the arm talent to pull it off? He has all the mental traits you want. And he’s got a chip on his shoulder and seems determined to be the next great QB. That’s the guy I want leading my team. But go ahead and stick with Sam.

The guy comes from a wealthy family. Those kinds of guys don't have chips on their shoulders.

I like his craftiness, I like his arm, I like his mobility and I really like his anticipation.

I don't like how he puts some receivers' safety in danger when he gets too cute with his creativity, I don't like that he has only put together one season that looks even close to as good as this one in a cupcake conference and I don't like his injury history, especially the surgery on his throwing arm. Those are all valid concerns.

Could he overcome them? It's possible, but they are concerns that make me worry about taking the guy at #2, or really any of these guys at #2.

I don't like the idea of watching another season of Darnold but I like the idea of ditching Darnold and watching another QB fail for the next 3 years even less, because the offensive line is still not something that looks capable of protecting a rookie, and piling a bunch of first year OL into it isn't going to fix much for the next 2 seasons. Mahomes would likely have failed here too because of the lack of protection.

Those are legit concerns, and no matter who JD might take as a QB (still not sure he's going to draft one) I think they should all sit for a half a season at least in order to get used to the difference in speed and power of the pros. You mentioned Mahomes, and even he sat for almost a year. And while he wouldn't come close to being the QB he is now if he were on the Jets, he would've still been much better than Darnold or anyone else drafted since. His physical ability, coupled with his innate feel for the game would've allowed him to compensate a lot for the failures of the OL. It's this similarity that makes me think Wilson can succeed here (although I'm NOT claiming that Wilson is as good as Mahomes...his game just reminds of him).

Anyway, I won't be shocked - disappointed, but not shocked - if Douglas doesn't draft a QB and instead trades back to acquire other pieces.

It’s up to the individual. Watching a bunch of his interviews I don’t get that vibe at all. Seems really cool, really down to earth and grateful for where he’s at. Mahomes’ dad was an MLB pitcher for a while. He made plenty of money and his son came up fine. I think Wilson has got that special ability that all the greats have to continually learn and get better. He’s already well coached. Guarantee Mike LaFleur is salivating over this guy right now.

Only areas of concern is the one-year wonder aspect and the lack of competition faced. We shall see. 99% sure JD will not pass on him. God have mercy on his soul if he does.

There are diminishing returns to investing in a position group, especially when you have to pay everyone.

I've been getting the same vibe. Been having a strong feeling JD is going to use the first pick on Sewell.

Regarding your last sentence (earning your spot on the team ), I really laughed about 20-25 years ago when Chicago Bulls forward Scottie Pitten was holding out for more money. The Bulls GM wouldn't budge and went on TV trying to play hardball. The Bulls GM exclaimed "EVERY player on this team has to EARN their spot on THIS roster!" Then thinking for a second, he quickly clarified "Except Michael!!!!" :) :D

Definitely agree with your second sentence as I have posted many times. I know if I was Sam and the team drafted a Wilson, or a Fields, I would not be happy about it and demand to be traded. And if I was Saleh, I wouldn't want someone on the roster who didn't want to be a Jet.

This is true, however where the Jets are right now I'm pretty sure what JD wants the most is to solidify the talent on the team, give the Jets a recognizable strength, and then round the roster off into a playoff team in a year or two.

He's going to be looking for the best way to turn the #2 into no-bust value. That's either trading it down if he can or taking an OT if he can't.

Remember that he knows OL as a special area of expertise. It's the place his talent evaluation skills are the strongest and if it comes down to a choice between a can't miss OT and a 50/50 QB he is going to go OT all the way.

He probably would prefer to trade down but we don't know if that option will seriously present.

The other thing to remember is that he didn't get his choice of the OT's last year. he took the last one of the run. That's not the case this year.

Having a QB on a rookie contract gives you greater flexibility to solidify talent elsewhere. That's value in and of itself. Given how bad Sam has been it's also very likely we'll upgrade at the most important position in the game in the process.

JD also didn't take the last tackle of the run last year. He had the option to take Wirfs and didn't.

Me too. After whiffing on Thuney and watching the potential Darnold trade partners dry up, it's starting to look like Douglas has his eye on Sewell which would be huge and give the Jets a solid Center for a decade.

With regards to the bold, NOTHING would solidify the talent on the team more than getting their future FQB. Without the FQB, he won't be rounding the roster off into a playoff team in a year or two, and maybe not even in five years.

With regards to the text in italics, just because he played OL doesn't mean that he's an expert there. His experience of playing OL could have influenced his philosophy in a negative way, and cause him to look at things differently then perhaps they need to be, or it could make him too confident that he can find cheap FAs and low round players and still have a great OL, or it could be overridden by his philosophy of not overpaying in FA and building through the draft. One would think that with his playing OL that the OL would have been his #1 priority in FA and the draft, particularly since he promised Sam's parents that he would fix the OL and protect Sam. In fairness, he didn't really have the chance to do that last year, but he perhaps could have signed Conklin or another RT. There were some good ones. Connor Hughes claims that JD was all in on Thuney, but didn't think any of the rest were Tier 1 FAs, yet would command Tier 1 $s. If Hughes is correct, then imo Douglas was mistaken and didn't do everything he could to protect Sam. IMO a philosophy like build through the draft and not overpay in FA has to go out the window when your starting QB is taking a beating or running for his life half the time, especially when he's a young QB and in danger of being ruined.

He definitely should have been all in on getting quality OG help this year in FA. I'm not faulting him for Thuney, but I am for Gabe Jackson and Kevin Zeitler. I also have a hard time believing that there's not a single FA OG who's better than Dan Feeney. With the way he's going about fixing the OL, Sam's career could be finished after this season, or if we draft and start a rookie, his career could be jeopardized. He's trying to have his cake and eat it too, and that doesn't work. He needs to wise up.

He could have taken Wirfs, but didn't. I doubt that he would have taken Thomas, at least I hope that he wouldn't have. IMO Becton was clearly the best prospect and played the position of greater need than Wirfs.

If he doesn't take a QB and looks to trade down twice, he should be fired and told to go play Madden if he's so crazy about draft capital, or worse, if he takes Sewell, he shouldn't even be allowed to finish the draft. Security should escort him out of the draft room.

Didn't Mahomes come from a wealthy family? And Peyton Manning? And Eli Manning? I can't let that scare me.....

Most top QB's come from wealthy families. They have access to the best coaches and training programs growing up. It's an extremely lazy argument to not like a prospect because of it.

It's not something to scare you, the reason I mentioned it is the other guy said Wilson has a chip on his shoulder, which is a BS statement. He's a blonde haired blue eyed Mormon who has spent almost his whole college career as the starting QB of the most prestigious Mormon university on the planet. I doubt he's faced much adversity in his life at all. Chip, my ass.

Mahomes doesn't play with a chip either, and neither did the Mannings. It's rare that the wealthy ones ever do unless they've had some dirty business done to them in terms of losing their starting job when they were actually better, not something that happens often to your run of the mill golden boy.

Doesn't mean they're bad, they just have to find something else to drive them.

If they were predicting him to go 42nd instead of 2nd he might have a chip. But agreed, there is no chip with Wilson. In fact, being over rated right now might make him complacent.

If Douglas wants a can't miss OT over a 50/50 QB, we should stuff him into a time machine and send him back to 1960 where he might be useful to an NFL team and we never have to see him again. A franchise QB is worth almost an order of magnitude more than a franchise OT. https://www.pff.com/news/draft-why-positional-value-matters-in-the-nfl-draft

When you take a QB at the top of the 1st round and miss it sets you back 3 to 5 years. That's the reality.

I wouldn't take a 50/50 QB on the 2 under any circumstances as a perpetually bad team trying to step up to the next level.

And BTW I don't think any of the guys after Lawrence is a 50/50 prospect. I think a couple of them might be 35/65 prospects and a couple of them have a snowball's chance in hell of doing anything after getting taken up that high.

I'm not even sure Lawrence is a 50/50 prospect. He has an Eli Manning look to him and Eli almost busted.
