We're getting down to the end of the cap crunch and there are still a few teams in trouble.

Will be a lot of fun to watch this play out tomorrow.

There's no salary dump though unless I'm missing something that his contract is guaranteed after the league year. They can cut Garoppolo at any time with a minimal dead cap hit just like we could.

I just would honestly prefer the potential of Darnold over the reached ceiling of Garoppolo, his happy feet and 3 yard receiver screens all game long. Darnold sucks but at least he takes chances at moving the ball.

If JD is going to trade Sam I suspect that JD will not get rid of Sam until after Wilson's proday.

If the 49ers roll with Garoppolo at QB this year they are paying him $25.2M cash. If they go with Darnold it's $920K.

That's exactly the kind of salary dump that a team might be looking for this year after last year's revenue disappointments.

No chance. Jimmy is a short term fix to groom a young QB and who knows when we will be picking this high again. Bringing in Jimmy speeds up Wilson/Fields development by not throwing him to the wolves. Kinda like what KC did with Smith and Mahomes

Yeah, I really see Douglas trading #2 for a haul, and while it isn't what I want personally (Watson), it's without a doubt a sound move and one that has incredible potential to make the team into a powerhouse. When you look at some of the proposed deals for the 2nd pick in mock drafts, you realize you aren't getting the QB (Watson or Fields/Wilson) but then count the additional quality picks that will allow the team to be so much more fleshed out, flexible, and competitive going forward.

I also still have a fantasy that JD trades down from #2, and maybe #23 too, potentially accumulating multiple additional 1sts in coming years, still makes a plethora of picks in this year's draft to further establish the roster base, yet also has built enough future draft capital for Watson if the Texans hold him into the summer/fall before deciding to trade him.

I for sure thought there would be a team willing to dish a 2nd round pick for Sam but I think his lack of a trade market shows 1 of 2 things...

    1) The league thinks that Sam stinks

    or

    2) Douglas is asking for way too much

It's early. We have nearly 6 weeks until the draft.

I'd have been really surprised if JD traded Darnold by now. Holding on to him keeps all the options alive and makes it impossible for other teams to predict the Jets moves - including whether or not they will keep or trade the #2, whether they will take a QB on the #2, etc.

The best way to make a seller's market for the #2 is to keep alive the possibility the Jets would take a QB on that pick while denying anybody a clear view that is what is going to happen.

So we get down to the nitty gritty with a day or two left until the draft and then JD trades Darnold for picks in the draft.

All of a sudden anybody who wants a QB on the #2 is on the hot seat and the pressure is on them to make a deal happen.

Nothing in JD's short history with the Jets indicates he will make a big move. A trade down is a small one. He may wait until the Dolphins move so he can drop and still get the Pitts kid from Florida. They say he is a unique player who will be a great one. As far as Sam goes why would other teams want him if he can't play?

Weird, it's almost as if some of us have been saying this for months.

Yeah was just about to post this. Kind of what I figured but I'll take it with a grain of salt because he covers the Giants.

If he said the same as others who would report it? The decision on Sam has already been made. Heck, JD and Sam have the same agent. He maybe sent to another team or stay with the Jets. No headline we see will change anything.

And he's had much less success in his chosen field than Sam Darnold has in his.
