I'm hoping JD is just waiting for this year's salary cap to be made official and then he will sign Maye up on a long term deal. This would also show the young players on the roster that giving your all for the team is appreciated and will be rewarded
In simple terms it buys time to work on a long term deal and it also guarantees he gets average of top 5 salary for his position, showing him and his agent Jets want to negotiate in good faith. I’m sure Joe D learned from the Robbie Anderson mistake.
What is his problem? This is not how a Jets safety should act! Maye doesn't trash the Jets at all on social media. He doesn't whine either. He cares and appreciates the team he is on and gives 100% on the field. Marcus always acts professional too. He doesn't even talk about himself in the 3rd person either. I don't get this negotiating technique!
According to that sports writer close to the Texans, the Texans are desperate for D-Starters, and may require 2 in any trade for DW. If Marcus doesn't care to be trade bait, he may hold off on signing anything until after the Watson thing happens.
Do all agents treat the organization their players play for this way? Or is this just with the Jets? If Jets tag him it’s a business decision, doesn’t mean they don’t want him. Why even bring it to social media already?
I thought that they would sign him to a long-ish term deal. One of those fake long term deals that teams can get out of after 2 or 3 years. I appreciate what Maye has done, but he isnt getting any younger. I dont blame the front office if they dont think he's worthy of the long term deal he's looking for.
it's their job and social media is a powerful tool. they will do anything to get their client money. it's also how they get paid
Officially tagged. Sucks we couldn't work out a deal but this is a fair price and I assume they'll negotiate some more. Unless the agent turns into a whiny cunt again.
Yeah, I think they will work something out. They have until June or July right? It would benefit Maye to get a multi-year deal and probably benefit the Jets too.
For everyone saying we should sign Marcus long-term, keep in mind Free Safety will not be a position that will be asked to do as much in this new defensive scheme. Therefore his value to the team goes down. We would only be paying him for past performance. In the salary-cap age, value always has to be equal to the role you play on the team. That's how winning teams do things. It's why the Patriots have won year in and year out. They don't care about feelings. It's strictly business. Yes, I know it's harsh, but you want to win long-term, don't ya?
Correct. That's why I don't think a new long term deal will come thru unless Maye gives Jets a home town discount. I think this might be the last year for him in a Jets uniform due to his age and asking price.
A sign and trade probably would be much better for both parties. Can we do that? We don't need an expensive free safety in this defensive scheme.
He’s a pretty versatile safety and at some point you gotta pay your best players. I feel the only untouchable players on this team is Quinnen and Becton (and that could always change after any given year). Of course if we don’t pay him after this year then Douglas has to hit on a free agent or mid to late draft pick. Something he’s had a very mixed record with to date.
I’ve been predicting this since early to mid season. It makes sense, if Ashtyn Davis balls out this year, there’s no need to keep him beyond 2021. Good to have both for now.
