Is he serious? Can’t tell. If he is, it’s the single worst sports take I’ve ever seen.

So you're willing to let a 6 game sample decide your views on Sam but not a 38 game sample. Got it.

You would get laughed out of a stats 101 class.

Look, I'm sure that Joe Douglas would LOVE to replace Sam Darnold with a FQB from the draft, on a 5 yr rookie contract. He'd LOOOOVE to. But....

If Trevor Lawrence was sitting there, Sam may already be gone. But Trevor is out of reach.

So that leaves JD with a few less than perfect choices:

    1) Trade for a Vet, with Deshawn Watson at the top. Use lesser draft picks for a lesser vet QB, or go for broke and, if necessary trade all premium picks (and possibly Q) for Watson. Go all in.....80% of our future team building thru the draft be damned. Get our FQB, take the cap hit, and go from there.

    2) Go with one of the non-Trevor QBs in this draft (Wilson, Fields, Lance, Jones, et al, using his #2 overall draft pick. Or trading down slightly but still getting one of these.

    3) Keep Sam and use draft picks to build a competitive team.

    That's pretty much it.

I assume JD will put in a fair trade offer for Watson. He won't go all in with numerous top picks plus D-starters like Q. Which probably means we won't get Watson. Fair enough.

So then JD moves on to 'Sam or no Sam'. Keeping Sam means he keeps his premium draft cap, so that will be VERY tempting.

Never mind if the top QBs in this year's draft are better than Sam, that's not even the question. The question in JD's mind is "Are any of these QBs potentially FQBs???" Not 'flip a coin' potential like most QBs, but as near a sure thing as you can get (like Trevor Lawrence). I don't see JD using his #2 overall draft pick to replace Sam with a QB who in 2-3-4 years just can't get us to the mountain top.

So even if Fields/Wilson grade out 'better than Sam', it may not be enough for JD to ditch his focus on TEAM building. His goal is not first round exit from the playoffs the next 4 years. But, if in his mind any of these guys have significant FQB potential, then it becomes a no-brainer.

I barely get out because of the pandemic, I'm snowed in, and free agency doesn't start for another month.

For me, Sam is just too risky to take a chance on, considering he's got a contract decision hanging over his head.

If he played well next season - not great, because he obviously won't be that no matter what next year - but simply WELL, the ensuing contract that would be signed would not make me comfortable. Neither would franchising him and rolling the decision over to next year.

He's basically dug too big a hole, with too little time left, and not enough upside for my taste. I would be ecstatic if Douglas was able to recoup real draft capital for Darnold in the next few weeks.

Well if he's not trading for Watson or making a pick in a draft with some depth at the position because they aren't FQB material then where is he going to get his FQB from?

Really good question. I feel he REALLY wants one of these new kids to grade high, very high. But if in JD's honest evaluation none of these guys are FQBs, then no matter how bad he's hopping, he has to move one. That doesn't answer you question.

He already has 2 first round picks in 2022. This is a really nice start. He may try and add to his 2022 bounty this season. For example, if he trades down from #2, get a 2022 1st round pick out of the deal. Whatever it takes to get him that 3rd first round pick for 2022.

Now if he keeps Sam and with the new team, coaching, etc, Sam plays much better with arrows pointing up, then he'll have tons of draft cap for 2022 to keep team building.

But if Sam proves to be no better, then he can cut/trade Sam then and use his 3 first round picks to get his guy then, eve through trade for a top vet QB or through the draft, trading up.

Darnold will be a free agent after next season. There won't be a trade or a need to cut him. He just walks.

I got a feeling they draft Wilson. I can't see Douglas not addressing the QB situation.

That was an absolute crime. The Jets had seen Hack in practice for a whole season as well. I still find it difficult to believe that actually happened.

He hasn't got anything hanging over his head, he isn't getting it that is the plain fact of the matter, he hasn't proved he is worth 25m a season, if we kept him and he showed some improvement he still wouldn't be worth 25m and he would be offered a fair deal by JD if Sam thinks he is worth more he will go to free agency and discover that nobody thinks he is worth 25m and he will either come back to the Jets and sign the fair deal or he will go and sign for somebody else at 8-10m or what ever.

One thing for sure is, he ain't getting 25m out of anybody on what he has shown on the field as of right now.
