Build a football team! Not rely on always reach for QBs that eventually fail.

JD is on record about valuing high character and drafted that way too

I know there are rumors about Wilson but who knows how true. But I have to imagine that will be high on his mind

we throw the word “talent” around a lot w Sam and other options but in Shanny’s system we should be throwing the word “intelligence” around more

Brady for a long time had some of the worst combine numbers ever for a QB eg shuttle. Seems teams can’t help but repeat some of the same mistakes

for the QB gurus who would you rank first for quickest, smart decisions? I want that guy

This is why I think Mac Jones is a darkhorse, and could turn out to be one of the steals of this draft.

Yes indeed. That’s why I still do support trading down a bit, or trading up a bit with the 23rd if JD and company want a QB other than Fields and Wilson. But I got flamed by a few that believe the first three picks will be unequivocally for a QB and would be crazy for us not to strike for one of the top three with the second pick. I’m not convinced that there is such a big gap between Field, Wilson and the rest, but is purely based on what I read from the so called experts.

While I doubt that Jones will be picked in the first 10 picks, and may fall into the second round, even so if Douglas thinks Jones (or any of the other QBs) is a guy he thinks can be his FQB he shouldn't get too greedy and think he can just take him whenever he wants.

I was talking to a friend today about the Jets QB situation and I said I liked Wilson at #2. Then he said he heard he was a 2nd rounder and has character concerns and is being compared to Johnny Manziel? Is this true? I haven't heard any of that.

His nickname is the Mormon Manziel... I read somewhere he was a pompous rich kid that is a bit of a dick..

Hopefully just immaturity because he’s got unbelievable arm talent

Yeah, I didn't realize that. Well, Sam Darnold is a complete class act and the Jets have been terrible the last 3 years, so maybe they need a jerk to change things up! :D

It was in Charlie Campbell's scouting report of Wilson. He had 2 or 3 scouts from different teams give a negative impression. I am not saying it is true as it is the only source I have seen express concern about his character but we are early in the evaluation period. I would like to see other sources express concern before thinking he might be another Josh Rosen. Here is the link.

That was good. Thanks! Must have been what he read. Comparison to Drew Lock isn't great, but I liked the other stuff they said. That was tougher on him than the other reports I had read on him. Still plenty of upside though. All we can do is trust in the process and hope Douglas makes the right decision at QB.

No someone with an obvious axe to grind started those rumors, but immediately teammates, coaches, former coaches all sprung to his defense and said that none of that stuff was true. Most people I see on Twitter and the Inernet talk about Wilson going in the top 5, and to the Jets at #2 if they don't trade for Watson.

Mac Jones on film by a mile. The only issue with that is Devonte Smith is an unbelievable route runner so it’s easy to get it out quick (quickest) and hitting an open receiver (smart decision).

I don't think he's like Manziel. However when the Charlie Campbell report came out I can't say I was too surprised.

I don't even think it's so much about being a dickhead (although he might be) as he just doesn't seem to have the presence needed to be the guy. Obviously guys will mature and grow but he very much seems like a kid and one who won't command a locker room. Very dopey.

So with that feeling, I don't think he'll interview well enough to win a team like us over to garner a top pick. That's why I like Fields so much. He seems like he has the it factor - that Kobe Bryant style drive and leadership ability to make a team his. Similar to Russell Wilson in that aspect in my opinion.

Yeah, I agree Fields has that factor. I didn't get to see enough of Wilson to see if he does or not. I've only seen him talk a couple of times.

Wilson is compared to Manziel because of his ability to keep plays alive, sling it, etc... Johnny did this, Mahomes does this, and Zach was also compared to Mahomes as well. As a College player Manziel is not a bad comparison as he was a pretty great player. Johnny was undersized, when Zack is bigger. Manziel is a sad story, mainly because he had talent, but was drug addict and alcoholic. Zach is none of these things. So, a bigger, more accurate version of Johnny without all the abuse issues to me is not a knock on a guy.

However, character concerns are simply BS, just like that other report where his dad didn't want him to go to Jets and "liked" some stuff related to that. I actually checked this myself and found the opposite to be true: the guy liked posts from Jet Nation, multiple likes on the Jets selecting him in mocks, etc... And one thing you can take to the bank is that he is not a second rounder. Basically, to make the long story short, this report your friend heard is absolute horseshit.

Mormon Manziel was a compliment to Zach because of some similarity in style, since Manziel was a Heisman winner and Zach was a nobody at at that time, not that Zach was a dick like Johnny.

Check out this interview, this is after the last game of the season. True team player and leader, who hates to lose. Listen until the very end when his teammates scream they want him back next year. He made the team his. Zach just led the team to the best record in 25 years and made BYU relevant again. I have no concern with leadership skills of both Wilson and Fields. Both will ace this part of interview, though I feel Zach may do better with plays breakdown, hot reads identification, etc...

Campbell has been consistently tough on Wilson. He had him graded as a second round pick a few months ago and mocked him as such and he seems determined to hold to his original analysis. I am speculating here but often times people skew their results to match up with their early predictions and that might be what is happening with Campbell. But, it also could be that Wilson has serious character concerns but I want to see more than one person say that. What I really like about Wilson is his accuracy when throwing into tight windows and his mobility. He might be best suited to sit for a year but he looks to me like the real deal and a great fit for the Shanny system. People say he is extremely bright and works amazingly hard. Trying to filter through all the draft noise he seems to be emerging as the clear number 2 QB behind Lawrence.
