When you have an almost non-existent running threat, play fakes are useless.

If no team is willing to offer a 2nd round pick for Sam, what's wrong with keeping him to start while Wilson learns? Wilson, though relatively advanced, has things to learn and to adjust to in the NFL. Do we really want another scenario in which we throw our young franchise quarterback to the wolves with a bad team?

So let's not sell low on Sam. If he has an unbelievably great year, we can keep/resign Sam and trade Wilson. If Sam has a good year and we love Wilson, we can let Sam go free agent and probably get a 3rd round compensation pick. If he has another stinky year, he'll still likely get us a lower round compensation pick in free agency.

seems like only yesterday when we called one of high draft picks too fat and a bum, only for him to get 11.5 sacks for our cross town rivals. It's what we do best

That statement couldn't be any more false.

You absolutely do not need to have an effective ground game to use play action.

You're underestimating the absolute shit show Darnold has been in for 3 years. Trubisky wasn't on a shit team with sub-NFL talent and coaching. The Jets have been historically bad, almost unparalleled in NFL history, for three years. This isn't to say that if you had put Darnold on the Chiefs he'd be as good as Mahomes, but they'd still be contenders for a SB berth, even if they didn't get there. But three years of having to try and overcome shitty OL, no weapons, and horrible coaching have definitely made him regress, but that would be true of almost any QB. I really don't understand why this is so hard to fathom. Yes, I've seen all the stats you and others keep posting to "prove" that Darnold sucks, but since these stats don't take into account the context of playing in a shit show they're pretty much meaningless.

More proof that maybe it's not really the individual player that's the problem, so much as the surrounding talent and coaching.

That's not true and has been debunked. Billy posted the article some odd pages ago.

the irony is that the real Jonathan Vilma experienced something like this in yesteryear. Guy won DROY and all kinds of other great stats and shipped out for 4th rounder to Saints where he won a SB

It's amazing how Tannehill managed passer ratings in the 90's for the two seasons he played for Gase (He missed one season entirely). Guy must have hall of fame talent /sarcasm.

It's splitting hairs but McShay said that, not Schefter but I definitely see your point.

I have actually thought Sam would get traded for a 2 so I'm not saying we should take what he said as gospel but when a guy that well-connected says those types of things, I think it's a bit short-sighted to outright dismiss it as wild speculation.

    For shits...

EJ Manuel: Drafted 16th overall, benched a quarter of the way through his second year, backed up Tyrod Taylor in his third year
Brady Quinn: Drafted 22nd overall, started 12 games in his first three years, looked god awful doing it at all times
Christian Ponder: Drafted 12th overall, Actually showed promise his first two years, replaced in his third year
Brandon Weeden: I'm not even wasting time on this one
Blaine Gabbert: Drafted 10th overall, benched in his third year after throwing 1 TD and 7 INT in the first three games
Josh Freeman: Drafted 17th overall, fell out of favor with the team because he did blow and his teammates/coaches hated him...
Matt Leinart: Drafted 10th overall, started 16 games his first three years, 14 TD, 17 INT, 55% as a starter

None of these things sound like Darnold.

Yep. Not just that though, Sam has also shown the flashes of his ability that all of those NFL experts and fans like myself have expected. So you can see that it is still in there. He just needs the right Head Coach and roster around him to get it out of him on a consistent basis.

I bet Sam's passer rating would look nice if he threw 131 passes to Jarvis Landry too.

    These would argue otherwise:

    https://cowboyswire.usatoday.com/20...-action-success-mike-mccarthy-dallas-cowboys/

    https://footballadvantage.com/play-action/

And while JV's article "proving" that running the ball has no bearing on how well PA works, I'll have to digest that further before I accept it. Just going off the actual Jets performance under Gase's playcalling and poor running game, I still think there's a direct relationship. Whenever a PA was called it seemed to fool almost no one, and why should it, when the "threat" of Gore breaking one to the house was virtually zero?

I think you're greatly overestimating the Jets ineptitude as a singular incident when it's not. There have been plenty of trash franchises that gave young quarterbacks absolutely zero chance. The Bills and Browns until the last three years have been the poster children for this.

Both teams had more talent than the Jets, easily, and better coaching - which really demonstrates how truly terrible Bowles and Gase were.

And for some reason we are trying to compare EJ Manuel and Brady Quinn/Brandon Weeden to Darnold. Apples and oranges. Honestly it’s more like fruits to vegetables.
