I don't understand what this means? Are you advocating that Flacco was calling his own plays or something?

Obviously there would've been a different gameplan for Flacco as made by Gase because he has a different skill set.

Look at how many people are still making excuses for Sam after his third straight year of being utter garbage. You don't think they'd afford a new QB similar leniency?

The FIRE JOE banners will be waving if we bring back Darnold and continue to win 4 games per year. There is no logical argument for not taking a QB. A new QB might bust, sure. But we know for a fact Sam is a bust. I don't know why we'd choose guaranteed shit over potential shit.

If Fields or Wilson turn out to be good and we passed on them don't you think people would be calling for JD's head?

We have discussed it a lot over the last couple months, but Douglas is going to be taking a big risk no matter what. That is his job though. I think the people that want to build around Sam make good points and the people who want a fresh start with Wilson or Fields make good points too.

Saying we know for a fact Sam is a bust is incorrect. We know that he played poorly for a terrible Head Coach with a terrible roster around him. He could have a really successful career with a better situation, we just don't know. There is a big risk because of the past 3 seasons. If he fails, then Douglas looks really bad. Going the other route, if Douglas drafts Wilson or Fields and they bust, while Sam resurrects his career elsewhere, that would look really bad too.

As Jets fans, our minds always go to worst case scenario, but I feel it could be the opposite here. I could see Darnold succeeding with the Jets or his new team, while Wilson or Fields also succeed with the Jets. I think despite it being difficult and risky, Douglas is actually in a pretty good position.

this^ both sides have very valid points and there is no 1 right way.

FWIW garappolo is a much worse QB then sam and in the shannhan system he's went 22-8 including a 13-3 season where he won his division.

He's definitely not much worse than Sam. That's silly to say. But yes, I agree, Garoppolo sucks and his success is a mirage as it's a product of the greater system and team he was on.

You are out of your mind.

    Garoppolo career stats:

    67.5% completion
    8.2 Y/A
    51 TD
    26 INT

    Sam career stats:

    59.8% completion
    6.6 Y/A
    45 TD
    39 INT

Your argument is honestly that Jimmy G is "much worse" than Sam? I'm out on this thread. Some of you are legitimately immune to logic and evidence and I can feel my IQ dropping every time I engage in this nonsense. This is not a place for intelligent discourse. You are wasting everyone's time with bullshit.

he's quite a bit worse. it's a testament to their system

woosh. completely over your head. the stats prove my point. he's worse then sam but performed better because of shannahans system. why do you think they are getting rid of him when he's cheap and put up stats like that?

The thing that has me almost convinced that Sam is a bust is that I have seen him miss wide open receivers plenty of times. I've seen him not see an open receiver and throw it to someone else that was covered. He's terrible against the blitz. He's terrible throwing from a clean pocket. He play action passing is atrocious.

It's fair to say the Jets had no real playmakers. It's also fair to say the offensive play calling sucked. But there were just to many times when a guy was open and he either misfired or didn't see him. Getting him better receivers isn't really going to turn him into a top 15 passer. He is what he is....a guy with incredible arm talent that has lousy mechanics, can't read a defense, and makes really bonehead decisions.

Isn't it odd though how the Jets keep drafting the worst QB in the league over and over again?

They must have an unlucky rabbit's foot to keep doing that. They just find that guy every time.

We did draft two in the first round, who were bad (Sanchez and Sam), and a pretty good one before (Pennington). Do not recall many first round picks Jets spent on a QB. Would have been nice to spend one in 2017 when we needed one. And none in decades with the pick as high as have right now. So, I think we got a decent shot at FQB with this draft, which also seems to be unusually rich with QB talent.

What I mean is Flacco probably didn't really care about what Gase wanted. Say Gase called a play with Perriman taking the top off to open up Crowder on a 10 yard crossing rout, with Crowder being the first read. Flacco might ignore the shallow cross and just air it out to Perriman. Where Sam would have forced it into Crowder like he was told to, Flacco said 'hold my beer'. The benefits of being a back up on a one year stint.

No different than when Favre came in. He did whatever he wanted regardless of where the play was 'designed to go'. Faver wasn't a young QB on a rookie deal listening to every word the HC gives him. He did what he wanted, like Flacco may have.

If JD keeps Sam or trades for Watson it says everything you need to know about the QBs coming out in the draft.

If JD thought there was a FQB to be had with a single draft pick, why would he ever consider Watson? Or Sam? He wouldn't. He'd draft the FQB and start winning.

That's only if you operate under the premise that each play has one designed outcome. I highly doubt that a coach even as inept as Gase was telling Darnold to throw to a predetermined receiver on each play. The defense dictates where the ball goes not the offense.

I heard a few times on this board that NFL combine is cancelled. However, this is from what I can gather fake news. Combine as of right now IS going to take place. That means, all measurement, vertical, speed, etc. The only thing that will take place during Pro days are work outs. I am really looking forward to see Wilson's measurements, Fields' speed, etc... This is probably going to take place in a month or so.

Come on now, there has to be a limit where people would go to defend Sam. Now Flacco did better than Sam in the same system, because he is a big name and defied Gase, while Sam did worse because he followed Gase's scheme exactly? At any level, this is a just a poor excuse. There is a more logical explanation. Flacco executed same shitty Gase's system better than Sam did. Let's not come up with stuff that does pass the smell test, just to prove your point. The facts point to Sam having regressed and performing worse than so-so back-up Flacco in the same system. Keeping that in mind and combining that with previous two years of QB ratings toward the bottom of NFL, the worst passing rating from clean pocket, among many other categories, do you think any other team would make Sam a starter next year if they had him? Heck, even Tannehil, whom people like to bring up a lot, who suffered under Gase, was 20 point higher rated, when he came to Titans AS A SUB.

I find it highly unlikely that Jets would be in favor to bring a QB like that as a starter if he was on another NFL team performing like this. For example, say Haskins didn't go to strip bar, and instead spent 3 years in Washington performing the worst in the League, would you want him as a starter for your team? Absolutely no way. You would probably bring him in for a low price as a back-up at best after you addressed starter with someone else. And that's what Sam is right now: a back-up, who MIGHT get better and be a starter at some point. We need a good starter for this team for 2021. And if we draft a QB, with already having Morgan, probably makes sense to get a vet, and fetch what we can for Sam. Even if we keep Sam, this simply cannot be as a starter.
