Does this offseason remind anyone of 2006?

First of all I cannot believe it’s been 15 years since the Jets hired Mangini. Where does the time go?

The Jets were in a very similar situation as a franchise:

    • New coaching staff
    • Embattled QB
    • Owned 4th overall pick and a second first round pick
The last time the Jets had two first round picks was 2013, but the last time the Jets owned a top 5 pick + another first was 2006.

If you recall much like Saleh Mangini was non-committal to Pennington. While it’s true that unlike Darnold Pennington knew he wasn’t going anywhere (his contract made that impossible) he still had to beat out Patrick Ramsey and rookie Kellen Clemens in training camp.

The QB situation in the draft is pretty similar as well for the non-Lawrence QBs. Three went in the top 11 and were good prospects (Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Jay Cutler), but none were slam dunks.

From there we know how it turned out. The Jets drafted DBrick and Mangold to anchor the oline for a decade, Pennington had a good year, and the Jets made the playoffs.

Pennington took the Fins to the playoffs but when you have a chance to get Brett Favre you take it.

They didn't disclose his injury problems during the season but he was still something special when healthy.

After we moved on he went 12-4 with the Vikings the following year.

Close, but there wasn’t a 26 year old stud QB we could have potentially made a no-brainer trade for.

There was one we could have signed, but the Jets were in cap hell and were committed to watching Chad's arm continue to fall off. He ended up signing with the Saints.

That is true, but at least we didn’t have a shot at him and then sign another guy instead who completely fizzled out within years.

There are some similarities for sure. One big difference is Chad had led us to the playoffs twice and won two playoff games going into that year.

2006 was a talented roster that had one position group fall apart the prior year, the offensive line. The QB got hurt again. This Jets roster has nowhere near the talent that team did.

We got Farve and Chad went 11-5 with the Dolphins, won the division, and finished second in the MVP voting.

But we got a legendary QB.

He was injured and went 12-4 when healthy the following year.

He was "injured" and went 12-4 when he got to the team he actually wanted to play for the following year.

We could have gone 10-6 or maybe even better if Farve wasn't making dangerous throws downfield when they weren't needed. Every week during that implosion it was "what the hell is Farve doing that for?". Maybe it was his brain that was injured?

I think there was probably a point during that season where he realized he might accidentally go deep into the playoffs so when he got a little tweak in his shoulder against the Bengals he acted like it was a lot worse than it was, and the Jets wanted him to play through it like he basically was known to do his entire career so he said Fuck It and started throwing ducks on purpose.

Then to sell it further he threw the Jets under the bus the following season about them knowing he was injured and continued to put him on the field. All of a sudden "iron man" Favre who played through all injuries all the time was crying that a team had him playing hurt. My ass. He sure played just fine during that next season.

All to protect the fact that he used the Jets to go to the Vikings, even though it was blatantly obvious, with the fake retirement, the Jets drafting Sanchez, then unretiring right before training camp was set to begin so the Jets had no choice but to release him.

    Burt is a dickweed.
