And success, and - with one exception - a genuine top tier QB. All of those things have to be aligned for stability and coach longevity.

Edit: probably should have finished reading the thread!

Biggest problem with Rex Ryan is those AFC Championship game rosters put us in cap hell, especially resigning Revis, etc.

When the GM was forced to pull away the punchbowl (offensive line comes to mind) our holes became much bigger and Sanchez lost all of the help he had earlier in his career.

Uhhhh yeah this is every franchises plan. We all want stability and everyone is very patient and level headed in this thread. If Saleh goes out there and looks worse than Gase Year 1, is the fanbase gonna stick to their guns and want to work thru the growing pains and keep him here for a decade? No.
Let's hope for the best but it's easy to say before the games start. There are very few of us preaching stability when things are going bad and everyone wants to fire the coach

It IS easier before the games start. For me, the key is how the team looks, why things are going bad. Are things going bad because they are undisciplined, and are playing in a very sloppy, careless fashion, or are they playing smart, hard, and disciplined, just don't have the talent to keep up with better teams. Even early on, even though we'll be playing new offensive and defensive systems and there will be a lot of new faces, the team should look well coached, prepared to play, playing hard and smart. They can lose because they're outgunned, outmatched talent-wise, but not because they are not prepared and are undisciplined, or because Saleh isn't making adjustments or good game plans.

The reason that most of the time Jets fans have showed little patience with HCs is that they were not good hires to begin with, and the teams looked sloppy, undisciplined, and unprepared out of the gate. They lost a lot, but it was why and how they lost, not that they lost necessarily.

I think everyone is excited about this hire and they will be more patient if the team looks well-coached and prepared to play each week, and Saleh looks to be a good motivator, has the team playing hard, and is making adjustments. I think the only thing that could really hurt him early, is if JD and he make the determination to try to roll with Sam, don't draft a QB this year, and Sam continues to play badly. I think the fanbase would turn on both Saleh and JD pretty early if that happens, but otherwise, I think they'll give Saleh every opportunity to prove that he should stay.

Crazy to see that list. The common thread is that all those guys had a HOF caliber QB....

I'm not sure why we are so excited about Saleh. His defenses finished 25th, 28th, 8th and 17th in the league, and in only one of those years did his team give up fewer points than they scored.

Saleh reminds of those guys like the long haired special teams coach on the Cowboys, or Rob Ryan, that the camera would always cut to on the sideline as he moved around assertively or yelled. Saleh can rush out on to the field with a maniacal grin, his head jutting forward and his neck veins popping out, so there is a youtube video of his "highlights", but the jury is definitely out.

Actually your brilliant comment is more important than you think

we had the coaches, the correct draft position, the legit players... but we ALWAYS fucked it up

belly Carrol but many other lesser profile
    Many many high first rounders
And lastly talent that we didn’t re-sign or traded

Looking back on the Jets history the longest tenured coach was Weeb ( 11 years ). Joe Walton is in second place at 7 years. The average length of service for a Jets head coach is 3 1/2 years. Let that sink in for a minute..........

To expound on that - the Jets made the playoffs only twice in Weeb’s 11 years (including the SB of course). In Walt Michaels and Joe Walton’s 13 years combined the Jets made the playoffs only four times and got to the AFC title game just once.

And these were the longest tenured coaches...

Don't know where you are getting your stats from. During the 2019 season, the 49ers defense was sixth in the league in forced turnovers (27), second in total defense (281.8 yards per game), first in passing defense (169.2 yards per game), and fourth in sacks (48).
