Fields isn't a "mediocre" QB. I know that you don't think that he is, but for anyone to say or even intimate that he's mediocre is mind boggling. What more than likely those guys who want to pass on taking a QB this year and trade up for "a" QB next year wil get, will be the very textbook definition of a "mediocre" QB. It's simply unbelievable how dense Jets fans can be!
Well, tonight Justin Fields was mediocre...at best. Simply because some fans disagree with you does not make them "dense," it means they're looking for something different than you are or they're seeing something different than you are. Belittling talk is not the answer.
Not going to happen. Jets will hold onto Sam. Look for them to trade down with Carolina and stock up on OT and Guard.
Personally I hope they get a kings ransom for the pick as this team is swiss cheese, but if they think Fields(or someone else) is the guy (or dont get decent value) so be it....
I could definitely see the Jets trading down and taking a couple of offensive skill position players in the 1st. Maybe a WR and a TE or RB later in the round. If the proceeds of the trade-down are this year they might also take a QB in the 1st. They might also take a QB on the #34. Somebody is going to slip through to that spot and the value there is much higher particularly with a couple of skill position players taken in the 1st in front of him. If that all transpired you have a QB competition in camp between Darnold, the #34 and Morgan with a completely new set of eyes on the process. That's a lot of talent to pick and choose from and the odds are decent the new OC finds a guy he really likes. I think the one thing the 2020 Jets did right was not to run Perine into the ground. He's going to be fresh next year and likely in an offensive system that does want to run the ball a fair amount. I think the Jets are very likely to win somewhere between 5 and 7 games because they do have a lot of holes but I like them a lot better with an offense heavy 2021 draft and the retention of Marcus Maye.
The Jets may draft a QB on the #2 and keep Sam Darnold. We have no idea if there's a trade market out there for Darnold at this point and the one thing the Jets are not going to do is cut Sam Darnold owing him $5m-ish for 2021, which they do, with a dead money hit of $9.6M. Aside from that even if they pick a QB in the 1st round there is no rush to escort Darnold out of town. If nothing else he would provide motivation for the rookie QB to get into camp on time and act as an insurance policy against any number of potential mishaps that might befall the rookie next season - from being unable to start right away to getting hurt in camp. I understand the 'time to move on' sentiment that is out there but Darnold is basically a free asset for the season and given what the Jets paid to get him they would be wise to get full value out of that freebie in 2021.
This is very true. Even if the Jets draft a QB at #2 they will need to bring in a veteran QB to compete with him in camp. Why can’t that QB be Darnold?
I think that's exactly what will happen as long as the earth does not tip on its axis and Jacksonville passes on Lawrence. Darnold will remain a Jet and they'll draft a QB in round one but not at number two. They will trade down once, maybe twice, and get the QB between six and 23, depending on how the board goes. That provides the most options at quarterback and the widest opportunity to recoup the value in Darnold.
Not sure I'd be too happy with Sam being the wise old veteran teaching the new guy how to be a pro when we haven't seen more then a flash of him being that himself. I'd say that you'd have to bring in another Flacco at a minimum but then are we going with 4 QB's or do we dispose of Morgan if we can't get an offer for Sam?
I very much doubt the Jets are going to bring in another vet QB if they draft a QB. If they choose not to draft a QB then another vet, Flacco or somebody else, becomes a no-brainer.

They have until May 3rd to pick up Darnolds 5th year option (average 25 million per year) or not! People dont realize how close that date is So you are saying they renegotiate a new Contract with him before that deadline? Cutting him and owing him 9.6 mil might be a cheaper way out
Keeping Sam Darnold would set this team back another 2 years....Hes basically turning into a stop gap.And nexts years crop of QBs in the draft are a step down from this years.If we take a QB in the draft it needs to happen this year
So a QB room consisting of Darnold, Morgan, Drafted QB? I guess at the very least you'd hope they'd have a dedicated QB coach to work with the new rookie/Morgan rather then rely on Sam to be the teaching them about fundamentals!!!
It may not be popular but adding another year to Sam's contract (at a price below his option) before the draft could be a smart move. Not only does it not put us in a QB or bust position but it allows us to consider a QB than might need more time to start. If we can't make that happen moving Sam and bringing in a veteran QB would be a good move. Going into the draft all in for a QB at #2 kills will reduce potential trade offers and our depth at QB becomes really shaky if the wheels start to fall off for our new QB after a couple bad games.
May third is the deadline for exercising the option at $25-28 million - nothing else needs to be done by that date. Do nothing at all and you still get 2021 out of him. You can write an entirely new contract with him at any time for any length of time.
If I'm Douglas I want to engage with Washington frequently over these next few months. Would be a great landing spot for Sam, and it gets him out of the AFC.
