Why? 35-28 record in Iowa. Decent, but not great. No NFL experience. I mean, not saying he is bad, but he is not some top program NCAA coach who won it all, and wants to try NFL, like Urban Meyers for instance. Why is it clear that he is #1 candidate?
He turned around the Iowa St. program. Before that, they were awful. Before he went to Iowa St., he turned around the program at Toledo. He is the CEO type and culture builder that the Jets are looking for. His teams play smart and tough. He has been named Big 12 Coach of the Year twice. In his second season his team beat #3 Oklahoma and #4TCU. In his third season he led them to an 8-5 season, including 6-3 in conference play. The 6 wins in conference play are the most in school history. Iowa St. doesn't have the recruiting power of OSU, Oklahoma, Michigan, Clemson, and Alabama. He is winning with lesser talent. He would be an excellent choice imo.

My point is that the Jets have brought in countless ex-Colts players to the team over the past few years. All have bombed. Now they want to hire their DC as HC? If hired he’s almost certainly going to bring in more ex-Colts. Maybe he will be the next McDermott and be great. I just don’t see it happening based on the Jets recent history with the Colts.
That Chargers roster is too damn talented to be a 7-9 team. It's probably the most attractive head coaching position in the league
Herbert makes that roster shine for whoever is coming in. If Harbaugh does decide to leave Michigan the most likely destination is LA. Which is unfortunate for us.
How do you view his lack of NFL experience, his ability to deal with older, more mature players, some who may be more strong-willed than college kids and needing to work within the confines of the CBA?
Why would you judge a coach who is building up a program by his college record? You look at progression not the overall record.

He didn't really turn Toledo around. They were a good program before Matt Campbell and have been a good program after him. Iowa State was a disaster in a much tougher conference especially considering he has to try to recruit against the states of Oklahoma and Texas while being in Big Ten country. He did a great job there.
I totally agree-- it's a great place to coach in 2021. I disagree that they under performed in 2020. 1) Any year that you start off with Tyrod Taylor as QB #1 is not going to be much better than 7-9 2) Rookie QB after that, and he played very well for the most part, but still, a rookie QB 3) The most talented part of their roster was on the COVID/IR part: Derwin James, Melvin Ingram, Keenan Allen, Hunter Henry, Malik Jefferson, Mike Pouncy... That's a lot of talent in the discard pile. I don't think Lynn should have been fired, I think he should have been given a raise.
Lynn is a good coach, but is game management is atrocious. He was fired because of that. I can guaranty the Jets aren’t going to hire a coach who was just fired. The Johnsons want to be able to sell this hire to their fan base.
He was DC under Tim Beckman when Toledo was starting to get good. After seeing how incompetent Beckman was at Illinois it became clear that Campbell was the brains of that operation.
From the mid-90s on Toledo has been a good program though. Obviously a down year here or there, but a bunch of 8/9 win seasons with a couple double digit successes mixed in there. That's not to say he didn't do a good job, but it wasn't some sort of magical turn around (even when he was the DC under Beckman). You watch a lot of CFB, bud? You seem pretty knowledgeable on the topic.
The Chargers lost seven of their first eleven games by a touchdown or less. This all while the team was having punts and field goals blocked left and right and allowing big kickoff and punt returns every game. Bad timeouts, decisions to go for it at the wrong time on fourth down, etc. That's indicative of bad in-game management. I like Anthony Lynn. I think he's a good tough football guy who seems like he's relatable to players. But he seems best fit to be a coordinator or a position coach. Maybe he'll grab another shot in a couple years but he definitely needs a good assistant HC or quality control coach to help him manage a game.
Thanks for the explanation, he definitely did a great job in Iowa. I would not be against his candidacy, just feels like the next step up here would be to take on a bigger College program, and make/keep that a success. I would not hate if JD gets him too, but would be a bit worried that he is coming off smaller college program. He did turn them around and got them ranked for 4 years in a row, including one top 10 this year, but still NFL is a big leap.
Hmm... We just requested to interview Aaron Glenn who is currently coaching the Saints' defensive backs. Glenn and Parcells apparently are still very close to this day.
If bringing in ex-colts bothers you I guess that’s for you to deal with. Them not working has nothing to do with them being Colts, they were all guys that were cut or traded for 6th round picks. Is it really surprising that they didn’t become good players?
