I agree with all these points, but if Fields had not just proven that he's in consideration for the #1 pick along with Lawrence, thus giving Douglas a legit FQB draft option, I'd say there was a good chance of him just rolling with Sam and maybe drafting a QB only if one fell to him later. But now I see JD going with Fields or Lawrence for sure.
Kinda feels good to be sitting at #2 now, doesn't it? As long as Fields is at least presentable against Alabama, we're in great shape going into the draft. Everything hinges on the new Head Coach's opinion of Sam. The new staff will spend tons of hours evaluating Sam's college tape vs. his pro tape trying to figure out what went wrong, and whether they think they can fix it and is he worth fixing. All options are on the table: We end up with Fields We end up with Lawrence We end up with a boatload of picks Today is a good day to be a Jet fan. FINALLY!
As much as I wanted Lawrence, I always believed they couldn't go wrong with Fields or Sewell at #2. But I agree, he cemented that consideration tonight. Any talk comparing Fields to Haskins is just ignorant, their skillsets (and skill players for that matter) are entirely different. Fields put up those turds the last few weeks, but it's a bizarre football season to fry a guy for. If Fields is fully healthy and puts up another big game in the National Championship, I think it might be a foregone conclusion. PS- Before Fields got injured..He chased Sermon 30 yards down the field to throw a block for him. Sign me up for that guy!
The consideration for the #1 pick is nothing more than a 5 second conversation with everyone in the room saying "No". Lawrence is going first.
I didn't watch today, but a buddy told me Fields was just hitting wide open guys. No NFL throws needed. Thoughts?
No Fields was great. It had everything to make him a hero. He got hurt and still led TD drives. He threw 5 TDs and some great deep balls. Doesn't mean we should suddenly pick him but this board tends to decide things by the last game. He is making the 2nd pick gold.
He was hitting guys in stride 60 yards down field... Something Darnold never has been able to do. He also made 2 TD strikes in extremely small windows. one looked like a questionable throw but it was perfectly placed to his bigger TE who boxed out Clemson’s #1 Cb. The other was through a small seam between 2 defenders.. it was a bullet and perfectly placed in tight coverage. really he threw the ball well overall and was the better looking prospect vs Lawrence tonight at least.
Fields had 6 tds (4 in first half) and probably could have had 2 more if Ohio State didn’t take their foot of the gas pedal in the 2nd half.
The answer is YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A clear yes. Fields played better tonight than Sam has ever played in his career. Facts are facts.
I've never changed my mind so drastically on a player in a single game. Fields did everything right tonight as a QB, but he also showed some guts sticking out there after the injury. That 60 yard bomb that he threw on his third read before he took a hit was unreal.
Just wait until Fields actually gets the medical attention he needs and we get an actual diagnosis of what he was playing with.
Let’s not overthink this one. Draft Fields & call it a day. He’s the 2nd best talent if not 1st & his shortcomings can all be resolved by good coaching. The football Gods have finally blessed us. The expression don’t look a gift horse in the mouth seems appropriate for this poll.
Alpha Player Thats who Fields is...I always had a good feeling about his game and I haven't voted in this poll. Clearly there is a big game against Bama next week but what he showed was everything I want in a QB - Toughness & Guts - Leading by example, his demeanor out there was all about action - Progressions, look left then middle then to the right and boom big throw - deep ball accuracy - running when the play called for it He made a couple of mistakes but he has all the tools and his mental game gives him a edge. I need a QB who can come back from conflict and carry that chip on his shoulder and be all business on the field. I really like this kid and his game is perfect for the new NFL. It really is clear that if we can't get Trevor that we need to really begin our next decade with Justin Fields.
At this point, I'm starting to wonder if Fields might be better than Lawrence in some important ways (accuracy on long throws, speed, toughness, and competitive spirit).
A brinks truck isn't worth what a FQB is. If Douglas thinks Fields is a close second to Lawrence and a FQB, he had better not pass on the opportunity to take him just to get a bunch of draft picks. If he passes on him and trades down, he'd damn well better be right.
