Discussion in 'Draft' started by JetsKickAss, Dec 27, 2020.

?

Assume the Jets have the #2 overall pick. As of TODAY, what do you want to do:

  1. Pick a QB at #2

    19 vote(s)
    37.3%
  2. Pick a non-QB at #2

    8 vote(s)
    15.7%
  3. Trade down and grab a QB a bit lower, picking up a draft pick or two

    11 vote(s)
    21.6%
  4. Trade down and grab a non-QB a bit lower, picking up a draft pick or two

    13 vote(s)
    25.5%

If you're referring to my post above, I made it bold for easier reading. No, those letters are actually lower case.
Only names and the first letter of a beginning sentence is capitalized.
So the answer to your question is "no".

We would read your post without the bold text, a lot of people would ignore your post because of the bold

I'll never post 20,000 times. That's for sure. You need to step up your game. When you demonstrate depth, I'll possibly address you directly.

I like your optimism. Where have you been? Even though we will have an easier schedule next year, I expect Douglas to have an excellent offseason, and he will be hiring the new HC, I think the best we could hope for next season would maybe be 9-7 and that's if we had Lawrence, Matt Stafford, Matt Ryan, or maybe Derek Carr starting for us. With Sam at QB, I think we'll be doing very well to reach 6-10 next year.

In an ideal world to me, Douglas really likes Lance and trades down to land him while also gaining more picks.

Then let Lance sit a year behind a stopgap and continue to grow the team.

For the record, I have no opinion on whether or not Lance is any good, I just know he's incredibly toolsy/dynamic with a huge ceiling. If Douglas really liked him I'd be excited about getting him AND more draft ammunition.

I just saw the latest mock draft by Kyle Crabbs of thedraftnetwork.com

He has the 49ers trading up with the Jets from #14 to take Zach Wilson. At #14, the Jets take DeVonta Smith, WR.

    TRADE: San Francisco trades 2021 1st & 2nd round picks, 2022 1st, 2nd & 3rd round picks & 2023 3rd round pick to New York (Jets) for No. 2 overall

That would be crazy. That would give the Jets 11 draft picks in 2021 (including two 1sts, two 2nds, and two 3rds, a 4th, two 5ths, and a 6th), 11 picks in 2022 (three 1sts, two 2nds, two 3rds, a 5th, two 6ths and a 7th), and 8 picks in 2023 (1st, 2nd, two 3rds, 4th, 5th, 6th, & 7th). I don't know how the Douglas would pay all those new players at the same time, but it would give him the ammunition to trade up for a QB in 2022, and to completely overhaul this team within 2 years. In 2023, the Jets would be set to be perhaps the youngest team in the NFL AND a prime contender.

Wait, what's crazy ? That we would have all those picks...that we couldn't pay all those rookies (I don't see why not).....or that SanFran is paying too much in draft capital ? I can't tell if you like this deal or not.

As of now: our #2 pick is worth 2,600 points on the Draft Value Chart.....SanFran is currently 15th and they can move up or down probably 3-5 spots but let's say it's 15th for 1,050 points. The 2nd Rounder is worth 430 points.

So we are giving up 2,600 and getting back 1,480 in KNOWN quantity.....PLUS.....unknown future values. We have no idea where SanFran is picking in 2022 and 2023. Let's assume they get back to being a powerhouse (Bosa & Co. return in 2021) and go DEEP into the NFC playoffs, but we won't assume best record in the NFC or a Super Bowl visit. If their 2022 and 2023 picks are high-20's then they're worth 1,092 points (in the 28th slot) in 2022 and 132 points in 2023. Total of 1,224 points but in the future.

So....we're giving up 2,600 points....getting back 1,480 in known quantity plus a near-worst case of 1,092 plus 132 for 1,224 points which could be a bit LOWER....or could be higher (see, Miami picking 3rd-5th thanks to Houston in 2021) but which is worth LESS because not only do you not know where the picks will be but they are in the future. $1 two years from now is worth less than $1 now....same thing with draft picks (Time Value Of Money and all that, I'm a finance guy :D ).

So to finalize: We're giving up 2,600 and getting back 1,480 NOW and another 1,224 in the future for a total of 2,704 which has 45% of the draft capital 2 or more drafts away.

I'm not thrilled with this. I think the #2, with some CFP QB Fever in the next few weeks, could be worth more in the present 2021 draft and/or more in 2022 and 2023 (if they want to defer draft capital, they have to pay more). SanFran is clearly in win-now mode in 2021 and 2022 even with a young QB draftee and they are going for it so they SHOULD be willing to overpay with draft picks -- and I'm not sure that they are.

This trade may work a bit better if SanFran loses on Sunday and a bunch of teams ahead of them win and they move up to about 10th or high-single digits.

But right now.....I'm not sold on going for quantity again over quality like Parcells did in 1997.

Zach Wilson seems to be the hot name right now. Most mocks have HIM at the #2 and not Justin Fields. This can change if Fields lights it up vs. Clemson and/or vs. Alabama/ND. Steve Young raved about Wilson.

Regarding that draft trade above....if SanFran wants that #2 and they are taking a QB, let them pay up. When Washington made the RGIII draft deal they gave up 2,120 points in CURRENT DRAFT CAPITAL (they swapped #2 and #6 and gave up their 2nd rounder) plus 2 future #1 draft picks in the next 2 drafts. The #2 then as now was worth 2,600 points. If you assume at the time of the trade that the #1 draft picks would turn out to be 16th (middle of the draft) the next 2 years then that is another 1,000 each or 2,000 points total, but in the future. As it turned out, the picks were worth more because Washington stunk one year and the Rams got a #2 overall pick which was fantastic for them (they still blew alot of the picks, IMO).

So.....our #2 is getting 1,480 current points and 1,224 future draft points. Rams in the RGIII trade got 2,120 current points and 2,000 future points.

Sorry, that gap has to close. Wilson or Fields' hype may not be equal to RGIII but each is going to do better than him for sure.

And if JoeD thinks as highly as Shanahan/49'ers may think of Wilson ? Then either raise the price OR take him yourself if you are sure he's The Real Deal and/or you or your new coach are convinced that Darnold will never be more than Sanchez Lite.

That mock trade with SF sounds like it’s coming from a 49ers fan, that would be a terrible trade for Jets.

I’m not at all opposed to trading down, that would be my choice and IMO best use of the 2 pick but I’d like to stay in top 10.

The ideal situation is Cinci going bonkers for Sewell and moving up from 5 to get him. In order for this to become reality, we really need Sewell to re establish himself as the best non QB in draft and there to be a huge divide between him and the next best T prospect.

At 5 we are still in range of Parsons, Chase, and one of the 2nd tier QB prospects if we decide to move on from Darnold.

It's from some online journalist I believe.

Based on the Draft Value Chart, it offers nothing great to the Jets. You could really call it a steal for SanFran.

I want alot more picks OR SanFran has to vault a few spots higher this Sunday.
