Clearly, in one offseason, Douglas was supposed to replace the entire 2019 OL with five studs who would go on to become the next Hogs or the next Broncos OL of the Shanahan era. Anything short of that and, of course, he lied to the kid's parents.
Sure you do if the 23 year old has been in the league three years and not improved at all. The Cardinals gave up on Rosen after one season.
The bashing of Darnold seems to be based on the assumption that all QBs are created equal, with equal opportunity, and thus should all follow the same development timeline. None of that is true. In fact, the differences in athletic ability, mental acuity, emotional make up/maturity level, when coupled with the CS they have to work with and the system they're asked to learn and master, couple with the differences in surrounding talent, are such that there is hardly any valid way to do a true comparison. Take a 'successful' young QB out of the situation they were in and plop them into another situation and they might well flounder. This isn't to excuse Darnold's part in this, but you guys waaaay underestimate the impact of the outside factors beyond the QB. Just go back and look at successful QBs since the merger and see how long it took them to succeed - I haven't done a study but in just looking at this it looks like it takes at least 3+ years for even great QBs to begin performing well. Again, this doesn't mean Sam is great, or that he will become great, but you guys are wanting to pull the plug way too quickly IMO.
You could be right, but the problem is IF....IF.....JD likes/loves a QB in this draft, he needs to take him. That QB won't be there in 2022 and maybe NO QB will be there. So while we and JD might want to see what Sam does in Year 4.....JD might not be willing/able to give it 1 more year. Maybe if he had the #1 draft pick in 2022 from a team that he knew would stink and be Top 10 but we/he doesn't. This is a REALLY tough decision for JoeD to make -- assuming he either LOVES a QB in the draft or if he LIKES one. If he LOVES one, then the decision is tough emotionally but easy strategically (like it was prior to last Sunday): Sam goes. If he LIKES one, then the decision is tougher: do you gamble on someone you LIKE but are not SOLD on ?
I am afraid the chances of this have just drastically decreased: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30600537/mike-glennon-start-quarterback-jacksonville-jaguars Looks like Glennon "beat out" Minshew for starting job.
No. I have ZERO interest in him. He's been a great player in college. He could be in the NFL as well, I just don't think he will. I don't think he's going to be able to put on much weight and keep his speed/elusiveness, and I think he will stay banged up in the NFL. In order to stay healthy, I think he will have to put on 20 pounds at a minimum and keep it on. He'll probably be productive when healthy, but I have my doubts whether he will stay healthy. I know that most will disagree with me, and that's fine. I could definitely be wrong. It's happened before and will happen again. Tyreek Hill has stayed pretty healthy, as has Tarik Cohen and Robby Anderson, so Smith could too, but we'll see. IMO the only shot we'd have at taking Smith is if we trade down around #10 or into the low teens. At that point Jaylen Waddle could still be available as could Rashod Bateman and even Kyle Pitts might still be available if the draft falls in some crazy way. I'd rather have Terrace Marshall, Jr. or maybe even Kadarius Toney than Smith.
When I say pro ready I’m referring to physical attributes, mechanics and most of all level of competition on the field. Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields (who I’m not high on) are more pro ready because they are facing better competition. That doesn’t mean they will necessarily be better than Wilson but it means they can play against other good players.
The big picture... Is.... This kid has played against shite defense's throughout his college career. Fools Gold. No thanks. He hasn't played against any good teams. Struggled against the only ranked team on the schedule this year. I'm sure there Is very few who have even bothered to find those games to have that realized unbiased opinion. All about those youtube highlights to get ya feeling good for a month or two. Baffles me.
No. Josh Allen was that team. When he wasn't In the line up, It was very obvious how much he carried that team.
While it’s true the Jets made moves on the offensive line, it’s also true that they were universally criticized as not being upgrades as they were mostly backups from other teams. Besides Becton, I reluctantly would have to agree with the critics. The likely realty of the situation (likely not what you want to hear) is that the Jets are not nearly as down on Darnold as the fans are and they are not looking to replace him with pick #2. so if not Qb and you can’t trade down, who do you Pick at #2?
Looking at QBR - Sam is the 30th ranked Qb this year and he was the 25th ranked last year. Josh Allen was 24th ranked last year and is 3rd this year, Baker was 19th last year (22 tds - 21 ints) and he’s ranked 5th this year (with new coach). Both guys are 1+ years older than Sam so a lot can happen in a year. People want to say it’s all on Sam, but when you look at Ryan Tannehill he ranked 27, 24 and 32nd with Gase and was almost relegated to never being a starter again. Tannehill is ranked 4 this year. Again, Sam is just 23... do we really want to put our trust in Gase, who’s only success was with Peyton Manning. If he doesn’t improve, we have two first rounders next year to use to get the Qb... plus we’ll have a solid team to better help a young Qb and who knows what we have with Morgan...
If not a QB, and I can't trade down, I'd take either Chase or Parsons. Either would offer a much bigger upgrade over the starter already at their position (Chase over Perriman and Parsons over Jenkins or Basham) than Sewell would over Fant. It would also depend who I signed in FA. If I signed Allen Robinson, Chris Godwin, or Kenny Golladay, I'd go with Parsons. If I signed an Edge, I'd go with Chase. If I didn't sign either a WR or Edge, I'd go with Chase as I don't really want to address D in the first 3 rounds of this draft, and unless Parsons switches back to Edge and plays at a high level, I wouldn't want to draft an ILB that high. Like RT, it isn't a prime position. WR is a prime position and it would help Sam tremendously to have a WR of Chase's caliber. I would only draft Sewell as a last resort, as I would not want to upset Becton and/or create future cap problems for myself. Even if I drafted Sewell, I'd turn around and try to trade him. Teams might not have offered much to move up for him because they might have thought that I was bluffing and wouldn't take him, but if they coveted him, and I had him, they might just up their ante. If I kept him, I'd probably try to play him at OG for a year or two until Fant's contract was up since that's our biggest weakness on the OL at present. The moves were criticized early when the OL was struggling due to limited practice time and no preseason. Notice that the media has either shut up recently or been praising how much better the OL has been playing. Many in the media criticize moves because they think they know better than the GMs, and they don't have all the relevant facts, and have no real idea how to build a team, and most of the media are a bunch of know-nothing jerks. They are wrong all the time and fans easily forget that. Douglas learned from a master GM. He could only do so much in one offseason. There were limited OL available in FA, and with covid it made zero sense to waste draft capital or cap space when the whole season may never have been played, and Mosely had opted out, and Adams and Bell (to a lesser extent) had forced their way out because of Gase, so he knew the Jets were going nowhere this season. Van Roten was an ascending player. He had become a solid starter with the Panthers, and wasn't just a backup. Fant was going to be a starter with the Seahawks until he suffered a serious injury and missed most or all of a season. McGovern was a starter, not a backup, so you need to get your facts straight. I don't think that it's likely at all that the Jets are not as down on Darnold as the fan base. I think that's purely wishful thinking on your and others' part. Sam has not played well, he hasn't learned, corrected flaws in his game, and has regressed badly. Even if his contract situation was good, I think Douglas and the new HC would be extremely hesitant to base their career on a QB that the previous regime drafted, who hasn't played really well in three years, and who has major problems in reading Ds/seeing the field, and with his decision making and TOs. His mechanics have gotten worse. If Sam is going to turn his career around, he needs to sit for awhile and work on his fundamentals and on reading Ds. He doesn't need to be worrying about starting every week. He needs to be in an offense that is tailored to his strengths, and it needs to be in a non-pressurized situation. With his contract situation the way it is, I see no way that the Douglas and the new HC will choose to roll with Sam, unless they don't get Lawrence and just don't like any of the other QBs, or think that the others wouldn't be ready to start day one in 2021 so are basically forced to keep Sam to start until the rookie is ready to take over. Even then I think they'd prefer another vet, but FA QB situation isn't great or even very good, so they may have to stick with Sam one more year, but I don't think Sam's 5th year option will be picked up. I think the best thing for Sam is to go to a smaller market team where there is less pressure to save the franchise, where there is stability, a very good OL, good weapons on offense, and where he can sit for at least half a season, if not a whole season, and work on fixing his fundamentals and reading Ds. Even if we hire a great HC, OC and QB Coach, there will only be so much they will be able to do with Sam because they'll be installing a new offense, and getting established with the Jets, and most of Sam's time, at least initially, will have to be spent on learning the new offense, rather than working on his flaws. An improved OL and better skill position players around him will help, but that won't do it alone.
GM's like their own pick at QB, like you said they won't hitch their wagon to another failed GM's QB, another strike against Darnold, who has shown nothing in this 3 year window
