IF we are not taking a QB at #2....and IF someone else wants Sewell (Dallas ?).....then let's let the Bengals know. The difference in today vs. 4 years ago is that nobody was trading up to jump Chicago to get Trubisky. Someone may very well leapfrog Cincinnatti and grab Sewell. The entire 2021 draft gets SUPER INTERESTING at #2, not #1. And if the Jets are at the #2 slot, there are so many options that the talk shows are going to have a FIELD DAY (or is it Fields Day ? ) talking over all the possibilities the Jets have at #2. If by some chance Jax is at #2, it's much much more likely they take a QB (I'd say 90% vs. 60% for the Jets).
Leonard Williams and Sheldon Richardson are playing very well for their respective teams. Wilkerson was amazing for the first couple years. You could make a case for taking a DT with our number one pick in any of those years. Taking one year after year while passing up better players is much harder to forgive. Bookend tackles is not a bad thing. As I asked in the other thread is there any chance Fant could swing inside to play guard?
The #2 rated Qb is Fields, no one wants him now...They want the #3 rated Qb Wilson who has a slight build, injury concerns. The Jets will not be able to pass on Sewell. It’s gonna be like the quinnen williams pick... can’t reach for a need when the guy sitting there is ranked several notches higher than anyone else available. Sewell is gonna be like a 7.9 grade (out of 8) vs the others who will be available in the 6.7-7.2 range... the grading is not even going to be close.... Bengal fans should be nervous if they were banking on getting Sewell.
Possibly although im not sure that fits his skillset. He doesnt bend that well & the strength of his game is in space. In the short term Sewell would make the most sense moving inside. He bends really well & has violent hands. Hed be just as effective inside as on the edge. Then obv in a yr or 2 he moves to OT. Not sure Jets would want to go this route but it did work for the Cardinals w Leonard Davis way back when.Different style player who ended up staying at Guard but their is at least precedent.
Colorado, NCJetsFan....if you KNEW that Sewell would be Munoz-like the next 10 years, would you take him at #2 ?
Think there are immediate impact players throughout the first 2 days of this class;Esp on offense. Not married to any player at 2 but not saying no either. If being honest id be extremely upset if the #2 pick was on D however. We cant continue to allow dysfunction & lack of scoring on O
I don’t believe Parsons will be the pick, even though he is probably the only defensive player that is worth it. Jets have some solid pieces on defense with QW, Maye, Hall developing well. They are still missing the one dynamic player that changes the game without having to send an all out blitz. I believe Parsons can be that guy. Right now I don’t believe there is a WR or RB that out scores Parsons or Sewell on JDs scouting points system. It’s how he drafts, he does not apply rounds to his selections. If he does trade back it might be with Cincinnati for one spot and one additional pick from them, draft Parsons and then address the offense with the rest.
No. I expect him to do that anyway. We don't need him and I don't want him. Becton will be just as great, if not greater at LT, and Douglas will get us a really good, if not great RT. We don't need Sewell.
False. He's definitely needed (o-line still needs work). And Sewell is projected to be a better prospect (one of the best LT prospects ever) than Becton was at LT. Sewell would likely be your future LT, and you move Becton to RT (where he may be even better suited). Douglas being an o-line man himself and how he values it, Sewell is a very real possibility at #2, and I'd have no issue with it whatsoever. You've set up your future bookend tackles for the next 5-10 years. This is assuming the Jets don't get the #1 pick or don't see the value in trading back from the #2 pick if they got that. That said, if Douglas believes Fields or Wilson can be a franchise QB, they've got to be the pick at #2.
I know this probably isn't the case...but if we just drafted an average player -- sorta like Parcells when he passed on Pace in 1997 -- by trading back and not taking Sewell.....if there are no game-changers at WR, QB, 2ndary, DL, etc.....just OK players......would you THEN take Sewell, if he was light-years ahead of any player or players you could take ? The reason I'm persistent in asking you, NCJ (aside from valuing your opinion)......is if we can get a WR later in the 1st or 2nd rounds....and if JoeD isn't sold on any of the QB's aside from Lawrence....then you either take Sewell at #2 (which you don't like)....trade back for multiple picks for OK players but no game-changers.....or OVERDRAFT someone at #2 and God Forbid he's a bust there instead of alot lower. This is starting to look like 1997 when Peyton fell from us (Lawrence this time ?)...we passed on Pace (Sewell this time ?)....and had NOBODY from the draft with us in 4-5 years because we went with quantity over quality. That's 1 big reason I want to stay at #2. No tradedown, unless it's like to #3 or #4 or #5.
This is where Im at too. You have a chance to draft a HOF talent at #2 in Sewell. I don’t know too many GM’s who are going to pass on HOF player for risky qb pick (remember were not talking Lawrence). You could play him with Becton for 2-3 years and still likely trade 1 for multiple picks including a 1st rounder if you didn’t think you could sign both. To me it’s such a safe pick - and it does fill a need... maybe the biggest need - Jets oline still stinks....
Becton had a good first season as an LT. If we move him to RT he's going to end up demanding a trade. No chance he agrees to earning 25% less over the course of his career moving to RT out of the goodness of his heart. Especially after he's proven he can be a good LT already.
Probably. But the issue is: how do you know for sure? There are a couple of things to consider here. One is that both Sewell and Becton are LTs, and while one or the other could slide to RT, are you getting less 'bang for the buck' by taking Sewell with such a high pick? OTOH, having two stud Ts would certainly greatly improve the OL even without adding anyone else, although we might assume that JD will be looking to add a G and/or C in FA and the draft. And another possible benefit - although one I'd hate to see come to pass - is what if Becton is injury prone? His massive size might cause problems over time. Even though Sewell is almost as big, he's not quite, and there have been no concerns expressed about him this way, so he would serve as 'insurance' if Becton does break down. That said, there are other highly rated OLs in this draft that can probably be had at a later pick. Given that Cincy presumably is desperate to take Sewell, we might well be able to swap picks with them in return for some premium picks that could be used for these other OLs or other need. At this point, if Cincy offers enough, I let them have Sewell, but if not I'd strongly consider taking him at #2.
It is NOT false. Yes, the OL still needs work, but that doesn't mean it has to be Sewell. I see that you ignored the issues about chemistry and the cap, and getting value at pick #2. RT is NOT a premium position and that's way too high to draft a RT, and I would not move Becton from LT. I don't think Sewell will be better than Becton, but even if he will be, it will only be marginally.
+1 I'd also add that the main problems with our OL are on the interior of it, not the tackles. There are just so many different reasons it doesn't make sense to take Sewell at #2. You can find GREAT guards late in the 1st round and early in the 2nd, and we want to draft a position of less need at #2 overall? Crazy.
