it was a great recovery by him. didin't commit PI, closed the gap, watched the Wrs hands and when they went up he put his arms up to block it

Key advanced metrics for New York Jets offense in 31-28 loss to Las Vegas Raiders

    Run behind No. 77
Mekhi Becton’s run blocking has been excellent all year, but until yesterday, there had not been a game in which the Jets took full advantage of the holes he created. That all changed against the Raiders, as the offense produced some phenomenal numbers when running behind Becton.

Overall, the Jets ran for 206 yards against Las Vegas, their most in a game since dropping 323 yards (second-most in team history) on the Broncos in Week 5 of 2018. Ty Johnson and Josh Adams combined for 178 yards on 30 carries, a sparkling 5.9 average.

A significant chunk of that success came behind Becton. The Jets ran to the left side 17 times for 112 yards (6.6 average). They were less successful in the opposite direction, rushing to the right side 15 times for 72 yards (4.8 average).

At Pro Football Focus, Becton earned a run blocking grade of 81.8, third-best among left tackles in Week 13 as of Monday afternoon. Since Week 9, Becton has the third-best run blocking grade among left tackles (83.7), trailing only Morgan Moses (Washington) and D.J. Humphries (Arizona). On the season, Becton’s 77.9 run blocking grade is eighth-best among left tackles, which is incredibly impressive for a 21-year-old rookie that has been battling injuries throughout the year.

However, Becton had one of his roughest games in pass protection. He was knocked with four pressures over 29 protection snaps (13.8% rate), including two strip-sacks of Sam Darnold allowed to Clelin Ferrell. The second was not entirely Becton’s fault, as that was a miscommunicated stunt pickup with Pat Elflein. Nevertheless, some of Becton’s technical issues, specifically with hand placement, led to glaring mistakes in this one.

    Denzel Mims extends 40-yard streak
It was one of Denzel Mims’ quieter outings, as he only grabbed 2 of 3 targets for 40 yards (adding in a two-point conversion), but he managed to extend a streak that puts him in fantastic company. Mims has posted at least 40 receiving yards in all six of his games this season. He joins Andre Johnson (2003), Amari Cooper (2015), Stefon Diggs (2015), Michael Thomas (2016), and fellow 2020 rookie CeeDee Lamb as the only rookie wide receivers in NFL history to post 40+ receiving yards in each of their first six career games.

While the targets have been fleeting – partially his own fault due to the need for route-running improvements and partially on the quarterbacks/coaches – Mims’ efficiency this season on a per-opportunity basis has been excellent. Mims has moved the chains on 14 of his 19 receptions, a 73.7% rate that ranks 18th-best out of the 117 wide receivers with 15+ receptions (85th percentile). His average of 17.1 yards per reception ranks seventh-best (95th percentile).

Can Cameron Clark really be worse than Josh Andrews and Pat Elflein?
The Jets continued to get nothing but atrocious production out of their backup linemen.

Pat Elflein started his second consecutive game at left guard following the mysterious exit of Alex Lewis, who has been placed on the non-football injury list. He was knocked with four pressures over 30 protection snaps (13.3%) and earned an astoundingly bad PFF pass blocking grade of 13.3, the worst of his career and fourth-worst among guards in Week 13 as of Monday afternoon.

Josh Andrews replaced Greg Van Roten at right guard after the latter left the game just 12 snaps in. He gave up three pressures over 24 snaps in protection (12.5%) and put up a similarly ghastly 28.9 pass blocking grade.

Fourth-round rookie Cameron Clark was inactive yet again for this game. This is mere speculation, but one has to imagine that Clark must be struggling in practice for him to not be getting the call over Elflein and Andrews, who have played poorly. However, if Van Roten misses extended time, Clark will most likely be activated for next week’s game and assume the top backup role at guard, setting him up to get his first NFL action in the event of an injury.

Josh Adams runs wild while Ty Johnson maximizes blocking
Josh Adams (8 carries for 74 yards, 9.3 average) was more electric than Ty Johnson (22 carries for 104 yards, 4.7 average), and that’s simply because he created more production on his own.

Adams broke three tackles over his eight carries (0.375 per carry) while Johnson broke two over his 22 (0.091 per carry). The 2020 average for running backs is 0.162.

Adams gained a whopping 8.5 yards after contact per carry compared to just 0.8 yards before contact per carry, gaining 89.0% of his yards after contact. Johnson gained just 1.8 yards after contact compared to a huge 2.9 yards before contact, picking up only 37.5% of his yards after contact. The NFL averages for running backs this season: 2.8 yards after contact, 1.5 yards before contact, and 66.0% of yards gained after contact.

Credit is due to Johnson for showcasing good vision and decisively choosing the correct holes, making the most of his solid speed, but Adams was the true game-changer in this one, racking up far more than what was blocked for him.

    George Fant returns
After missing the previous game against Miami, George Fant returned to the starting lineup at right tackle, producing some mixed results. He allowed four pressures on 30 protection snaps (13.3%), a poor total, but his pass blocking grade was a decent 57.9, which ranks 14th out of 24 right tackles to play in Week 13 thus far. This suggests that his losses in protection were not exactly catastrophic.

In the run game, Fant earned a 63.2 grade, also ranked 14th out of 24 qualifiers in Week 13 to date.

It was a ho-hum return for Fant. There were not many times he popped out positively, but he rarely stood out in a bad way, either.

Jamison Crowder finally gets his due
Jamison Crowder had been hung out to dry by his quarterback countless times over the past few games, resulting in misleadingly poor production. Against the Raiders, Darnold finally found his top-tier slot receiver when he got himself open.

Crowder grabbed 5 of 7 targets for 47 yards, with all five catches resulting in conversions. Three were first downs and the other two were touchdowns.

The 27-year-old’s hands have been soft this season. Crowder has 40 receptions and just one drop.

    Connor McGovern is heating up
Connor McGovern allowed only one pressure over 30 protection snaps (3.3%) against Las Vegas. He looked great in the running game, helping to power a strong inside attack. Over 20 carries between the tackles, the Jets picked up 147 yards (7.4 average) and eight first downs (40.0% rate). McGovern was in the middle of that success. His 82.8 run blocking grade is a season-best and ranks second among centers in Week 13 thus far.

Since Week 9 (McGovern and the Jets have played 4 games over that span), McGovern is PFF’s top-ranked center in the running game (89.4 grade) and No. 2 center overall (81.4 grade).

From a physical standpoint, McGovern has been tremendous this season. He wins one-on-one protection reps with regularity and has been very strong as a run blocker. McGovern just needs to continue ironing out his issues with awareness and decision-making in protection, working his way back to where he was in these areas last season. Progress is being made, but there is still some work to be done before we can confidently say his pressure prevention ability has returned to the elite level it was at in 2019.

Yeah the run game looked NIGHT AND DAY better than it has

I don’t know how much of that is due to the Raiders defense, but it was no surprise that when you don’t start a 37 year old RB, you look WAY more explosive ... we just felt so much faster

of all the things Gase has done poorly, playing Gore on a winless team is close to the top of stupid things...the only possible excuse I could even contemplate is stuff like pass protection, where a vet like Gore will be much better than the kids, and indeed that did show up in this game, as Johnson totally whiffed on one blitz pickup up the middle that resulted in a sack. However, that’s still not enough of a reason to stay with Gore.

gore is a classy guy and deserves better, but I would let him rest and recover from his concussion...

There's no question that the young guys deserve to play and have a chance to show what they can do. The problem is that if they play, the Jets could wind up winning 1-2 of the remaining games they play. We've come this far. We need to finish the 0fer so that we get Lawrence and Gase is gone. I'm in favor of starting Gore and letting him pad his HOF stats. The young guys will have their chances next year.

Perine has had 55 carries but he averages the same as Gore. Ty Johnson finally got some work and looks way better than Perine. Like you said, how much of it was the Raders run defense which looked horrible? It would be great if Johnson is for real. The guy was a 6th round pick by Detroit last year and was cut. It would be a score if he hit with us.

The Hawks run defense is pretty weak so this game wont be the best measure. But by that standard I'd hope to see more good numbers.

    IDK we got

(8-4) seahawks - coming off a bad upset to the giants. jamaal gets a revenge game chance. no answer for wilson to metcalf. We should lose this easily. the only positive is seattles D is very burnable so we could at least see some offense out of the jets

(8-4) Rams - are 8-4 and 1st in their division. coming off a huge win against arizona. they are a pretty balanced team but goff is due to have a big game and i don't see how we can cover kupp and woods.

(9-3) Browns - browns are red hot and fighting for a playoff spot. they have a top defense and run game and their OC is creative and finds ways for big pass plays off the PA and even landry throwing some. Can't see us winning this

(6-6) Pats - bellichick will always find ways to win. people will say he'll throw the game so we lose tlaw. bill would never do that. he hates the jets, he wants to cement the 0-16 season. he just won a game 45-0 against the hottest rookie QB the NFL has seen in a while while his QB threw for under 70 yards. even if we had a dream team bill would outcoach gase to a victory.

I'm hoping jax beats chicago to give us some breathing room. bears have lost 6 in a row and are just not good

Never liked the perine pick. not a fan and he hasn't shown me anything otherwise. Ty and adams are better. I could see us drafting a RB as well a better one. I don't think perine will make the team in 2022

He isn't really wrong though is he?

If Gore hadn't gone down in the first play, Gase would not have used Adam's at all and Ty sparingly, the proof is in all the other previous games.

You're not telling us Gore was good for the 170 yards rushing.

i agree...I’ve seen nothing from Perine so far to make me think he’s anything other than a very average RB, maybe a change of pace or third down guy

So 1st quarter here are the bad play calls

1st drive (mind you we still got the TD)

14:47 opening play. gore off LT same way we've opened every game. very predictable. we gain 2 yards and gore gets hurt

12:59 2nd and 1. run up the middle barely getting the 1st. 2nd and 1 is where you take a deep shot off PA from midfield because if you miss it, it's 3rd and short

11:42 - calls play action roll out where sam has to throw across field to his target. on top of that they got a free runner too so by the time sam could trun around and fire on the misdirection he's hit and ball goes short. incomplete

10:03 1st and goal from the 3 - we run twice up the middle for no gain. awful calls. thankfully sam/crowder bailed him out on 3rd down for the TD

    5 bad play calls

    2nd drive

we got a turnover and had the ball on the 45 yard line to start.

5:06 2nd and 10, runs up the middle for no gain making it 3rd and 10. this is a down where you look to pick up 5-6 yards in air and have a deep option as defenders guard the sticks. instead we wind up in 3rd and long where the T off again and sam gets hit leading to an in completion and 0 points off the turn over

1 bad play call (3 and out)

    2nd quarter

our 1st drive was actually called really well. no complaints from me on that TD drive. he ran off LT with success and set up PA and sam delivered with a TD drive throwing one to crowder

    2nd drive

    on our own 9

7:50 run up the middle loses 2 very predictable call like he starts every drive

only a 4 play drive, sam fumbled

    1 bad call

    3rd drive

2nd and 3. he calls a 4 yard curl route to perriman where sam gets picke don the bad throw. he shouldn't have thrown it but why is he running a "1st down route" on 2nd down. that's the time to double move. had he called a double move, perriman gets a huge play not an INT

    1 bad call

    4th drive

1:12 left we start at our 25. was a pretty well called drive but darnold fumbles again. no complaints here

    that was the 1st half

about 1/3rd of the play calls were dumb and bad

When Gase runs the ball in his offense, and stays with it he is successful, When he was winning in Miami, the year they went to the playoffs he ran Ajayi(sp) like a stud and they won. By the middle of the next yr,he had stopped using Ajayi and traded him. Never had a back he really ran consistently since and his record reflects that

    2nd half

    3rd quarter

    1st drive

7:52 1st and 10 - of course a run but this time off LT

6:10 3rd and 10 he calls a player where only 1 WR is past the 1st down marker and there are 5 defenders around him. sam still throws it to him and almost gets picked.

    2nd drive

3:00 2nd and 20 calls a 4 yard pass to a RB leading to 3rd and 16 where we are backed up and have to settle for a screen and punt

again we are awful on offense in the 3rd quarter. no adjustments made

    4th quarter

    1st drive

we essentially run the ball behind becton the whole time for big chunks. it was working no complaints. only a couple passes called. sam completed 1 to crowder for a 1st down and also ran it in on a QB draw. no complaints here. we get a TD

    2nd drive

again we run mostly behind becton to good sucess. he did a PA fake to run off LT and roll out and throw to the right. it was a godo play that went for chunk yards to griffin. my only complaint on this drive is 1st and goal form the 5 and we ran 3 times up the middle and barely made it. no attempts to use crowder or throw one up to mims. we take the lead 24-28 and defense holds them to get us the ball back.

    3rd drive

we take over. LV has 2 TOs left. under 2 minds inside out own 10

we run 3 times. at no time does gase take the chance to ice the game and take a knee. worse off on 3rd down he calls an outside run that almost gives them a free time out by going out of bounds. thats playing not to lose. if he takes a chance and actually tries for a 1st as the raiders are playing the run hard and we get a 1st we can take a knee and win awful ending.

also FWIW GW was calling cover 0 blitz pretty much the whole game and it was working. carr was completely rattled and off his game

So overall most of the 1st 3 quarters were called bad. the 4th quarter was called pretty good but only because the run was working or it would have been 3 and outs. no 2nd half adjustments. 3rd quarter offense was terrible. and played like a coward on the last drive which could have prevented the raiders form having a chance at a hail mary. gase deserves more blame for coahcing like a coward in desperate need of a win on an 0-11 team then GW does for taking a gamble to ice a game IMO

Becton didn't have too bad of a game. He did get beat once by Ferrell ( Ferrells second sach was up the middle ) and it would have been a sack on first and ten but Darnold never felt the pressure. Watching the replay, Ferrell was wrapping Darnold up around the thighs as Sam attempted to pass. His terrible throwing motion caused the fumble. He actually brought the ball below his waist and behind his back striking Ferrells helmet.
A good percentage of the running yards you mentioned came behind Becton. Not a Stud but not a dud either.
